Wests Tigers fail in bid to lure $400m car baron Neville Crichton

“We were approached a number of weeks ago by a representative of Wests Tigers regarding an opportunity,” Crichton told The Daily Telegraph.

“We looked at the opportunity and decided not to pursue it — a decision we then communicated to the club.

“For clarity, their approach did not concern our Maserati brand,” Crichton said.

“I wish the club all the best in their future sporting and sponsorship endeavours.

So why on earth did this come out yesterday?

Seems incredibly unprofessional.

Dean Richie released it yesterday. Hi Lurker

Unprofessional is his middle name. Has some crap story, hears it's about to be a non-starter, decides to release the story for 1 day of kicks, then it's shut down the following day.

@GNR4LIFE Indeed in itself! Cashed up individuals and players just want nothing to do with the club! The doors to the kingdom Will have to be opened sooner or later or maybe not ...

Maybe Benny wanted some attention

@Tiger_Steve if he’s on the board can’t help with TPA’s - which is where we need help. Shouldn’t sell board seats to a dogs sponsor anyway

Exactly and as usual we tell all and sundry we want this guy as a sponsor which also rules him out . I'm all for getting rich backers behind the club but why announce it to all and sundry.

You mean like Uncle Nick, the chair of the Roosters, who doesn't help with TPA's?

He doesn't go round sprouting the who's who of his address book and thereby keeps his associates out of the limelight. The big players don't like their business deals splashed all over the media but hey we just gotta tell anyone who will listen.

The club needs to start an investigation I think.

The club needs to keep their mouth shut on any business deal until its signed sealed and delivered. It just shows to everyone once again what an unprofessional organisation this is. The first thing I would be doing would be to find who leaked the original story to the press and show them the door. Just looking at the original story it has Benny's fingerprints all over it and then Pascoe stupidly confirms the approach. I don't think Pascoe has learnt a thing about keeping his mouth shut since the Farah fiasco.

But the article had quotes from Benny and Pascoe. They had to give permission to be directly quoted. Why would they allow this if they knew he'd already turned them down? Makes them look like fools. Even if he was still considering the proposal he sure as hell wouldn't want his name splashed around tabloid rags like the Tele that surely would have scared him off if he was still undecided.

The quotes could have been taken weeks or months ago. The article says Tigers have been working on this for a few months.

That would be my guess.

The Tele just sat on it while they milked the Matterson story for all it was worth.

@cochise I’ll do it

The problem is I don't think many people here actually know the role of the board and the Chairman, it is not there role to run the club on a day to day basis. Their role is to oversee the club and set its direction, for an example some goals the board might set would be
1. For the club would be to make the top 8.
2. Secure $5m in sponsorship.

They would come up with strategies to achieve these goals but they would employ a CEO and a coach who are responsible for ensuring these targets are met.

Barry O'Farrell is not sitting there arranging sponsors, that is not his role in the club, that is the role of the CEO and sponsorship departments.

It wont stop people who dont like him. The hate is real with some of this lot.

The last kind of person you want for this position is someone sitting at home without a job. Successful people are busy . Thats why they are successful

Would be a big win for the club. Hard to knock any initiative that brings wealth, business acumen and broader networks into the club. Interesting that Pascoe is quoted in the media about it seemingly before any agreement is across the line though.

Surprised me also that this is a story, particularly when it's far from over the line.

And the deal back fired.

Pumped the brakes rather quickly
