What if the Magpies were the sole NSw Cup side?

In over 10 years before the wests tigers what did west do with them….diddly squat.Small old balmain still kicked your asses.

westsTIGERS

Wests made the finals three times in the period you are referring. Your point is incorrect.

Further to the minutes of the wests group, I was actually more interested in the reference to macarthur being both the club's biggest opportunity and challenge. What are the challenges?

And balmain made it only once in 1990.Not quite kicking our asses champ.

EXTRACT FROM WESTS GROUP BOARD MEETING WITH Wests Tigers CEO Stephen Humphreys

READ POINT 3!!!

- Made it clear that from the Wests Tigers point of view, they think they would be best served by a single Reserve Grade side as it allows them to train and be coached as required by the NRL coach.

- Round 22 will be Wests Heritage Round to be played at the SCG to represent the 1961 grand final between Wests and St George. A big effort will be made by the Wests Tigers to honor Western Suburbs Magpies.

- He acknowledged that their is difficulty in trying to break away from the perception that the Wests Tigers are just an extension of Balmain. Said they are conscious of this and are trying to help rectify it.

- Even though the Wests Tigers don't provide any direct funding to the Magpies, they do have HM and SG Ball players on Wests Tigers contracts.

- Acknowledged that the Macarthur district is the biggest opportunity of the club but also the greatest challenge. Corporate support still comes from mostly Sydney, but the juniors and supporters are coming from out in the South West of Sydney. In the future see's more games will be moved to Campbelltown.

Sounds like lip service to me from humphreys he says all this Wests friendly stuff at the wests agm and whats he done other than take all wests players and put them in balmain nsw cup and try and get rid of two wests juniors in gibbs and fulton.I think humphreys does a very good job but on this issue he needs further improvement.

Did he say what they are trying to do to rectify it???

good i hope more games are moved to campbelltown. did he give an estimate or plan when this will happen???

Having one state cup team called Wests Magpies isn't going to stop the odd commentator saying Balmain or people saying Tigers 23.5% more often than they say Wests… Hire a PR firm if you're worried about it. But the argument keeps changing: 1 minute it's about developing the Campbelltown area and now it's about profile building... Calling the feeder team does nothing to address those issues.

This thread is surely running out of puff...

Wests finished above Balmain every yr between 91-96,made the finals 3 times to Balmain's 1and you consider Balmain to have kicked Wests ass :crazy …what did Balmain achieve that was so great after 1990 besides a wooden spoon in 94?

Lol coming from someone that followed a team that won the most wooden spoons we won the same amount of spoons as you guys won premierships.hahaha we had a successful history one that they could only wish they had.

Yoss i agree ..and i been guilty been an idiot balmain supporter but there seems to be alot more wests ones this thread proves it.

your the one who brought up what Wests did in their last 10 yrs and it was proven to you that not only was their record not as bad as you say but it was far superior to Balmain's…the fact you ignored those facts and responed with the old wooden spoon chestnut shows your ignorence and your refusal to admit you've said something wrong when proven

Standard boring and backwards looking response.

Back to the topic:

If there was to be an "NRL Reserve Grade" competition, what does this imply for each of the 16 clubs?

I estimate close to 70 players per club. That is over 1100 players with NRL contracts. Based off an average salary of $70,000, that is close to $5m in wages alone. Is this scenario even plausible? Would QRL and NSWRL come to the party if it meant the death of the Qld and NSW Cup?

Surely no decision on the two state cup teams should be made until after the Independent Commission is set up and provides its planned structure of the competition.

I don't see that as being overly relevant. There is nothing stopping us moving to a single (all age) feeder team next season. Any move to an NRL reserve grade competition would not effect that, it would just mean they'd be playing in a different comp. Even if the IC moved towards a universal reserve comp, it would not necessarily mean an increase in NRL registered players. It would most likely be a continuation of what we now have: 25 top teir (possibly 30) with the reserves teams being made up of those players fit but not needed for 1st grade and augmented by players outside that top 25/30 as it is now.

Your a funny bloke…...ignorance pot calling the kettle black there. You mentioned 94 i mentioned yous have one of the most unsuccessful history in the game.far superior keep dreaming you guys were going broke.
But keep making a .....of yourself and go and watch 1952 grand final the last time you were in one.

Silly thread, but just my 2 bobs worth thats vaguely on topic.

As an old maggie I sometimes hear our team called "Wests" by commentators etc….warren Smith often does.
It takes me back for a second when I hear it...to a time before Wests Tigers. I think of Western Suburbs & Wests Tigers.

When I hear them called the Tigers,,,,its in the now, I think, Wests Tigers. I never think Balmain unless the word balmain is mentioned.

I do wish theyd use all three colours though in the merchandis and anything else to do with WTs.....Black & gold is just balmain and always will be....we have three colours. Use them,

you guys need to give it up you sad sad boys and girls, really who gives a stuff tomorrow is much brighter than yesterday. Leave the past where it is lets get on with supporting the Team we are proud of The Mighty Tigers oops I mean Wests Tigers lol

As it stands, I'd say we'd have a distinct advantage having two teams (and salary caps) to choose from. I'm not sure how the second tier cap works given we have these two teams though? Would appreciate any enlightment so I am not barking up the wrong tree

As I understand it, there are basically 3 caps: The top 25 (NRL), The NYC Cap, and a second teir cap which covers players outside that top 25 who get called up to play NRL (or who are registered through an NRL club). I believe for the most part you can pay whatever you want to NSW Cup players so long as they don't play NRL AND aren't part of your top 25 players.

I agree that is now 2011 and we have a great modern team to support in the Wests Tigers, however we have a generation of 25 year olds to 85+ year olds who are lifetime league fans who followed the Western Suburbs Magpies or the Balmain Tigers. Thats 60 years of Rugby League memories and passion that for a lot of these people would like to be honoured or remembered to a respectable extent in the team we follow today.

Other NRL Teams thrive of their history and tradition (teams like the Dragons (despite merging with Illawarra), the roosters and of course the rabbitohs) just because we have a new joint identity and exciting future doesnt mean we should let go or ignore the 200 years of combined history between both 1908 clubs.

So passionate magpie fans like myself and the many balmain boys, still have something running through their blood for what they grew up with and what they see and what they WANT to be remembered and honoured in the NRL club they follow today.

So my passion and those of others on this thread come from a desire to retain that identity, history and brand both recognised in the NRL side and preferably (but not guaranteed ) in their own right in lower grade competitions.

Best comment on this topic.

The fact that WestsTigers are now having a dinner that has the Balmain HOF dinner as part of it just seems to be a rub your noses in it.

Yes, have to agree with the need to use all three colours, white seems to go missing in some of the merchandise. I can understand why black and white and black and gold are used in the traditional jerseys but apart from that all 3 colours should feature when it comes to Wests Tigers.
