What's So Attractive About Cronulla?

Serious question. For the life of me I can't understand how they can attract such good talent, so easily. I can understand players wanting to join the Roosters, Manly, Brisbane, Melbourne and Bulldogs, who have winning cultures and regular shots at Premiership glory, but Cronulla? Why do many of the good players want to go there? I just don't get it.

They've won nothing and probably never will, they're not a team that regularly make the finals, they've been as much as a basket case (on and off the field) as we have for quite a few seasons now and they have lacked finances as well, but somehow they have still been able to snare the likes of Lewis, Gordon, Barba, Ennis, Fifita, Beale, Tupou & Maloney over the past few seasons.

Meanwhile, the best we can hope to sign are young, unproven hopefuls from the lower grades, ageing has-beens on their last legs and a couple of promising fringe players, who move on to better things once they've jagged a first grade spot and proven themselves capable of playing weekly NRL. And it's been like this for years - I just don't get it. Anyone got an answer to this puzzle? It gives me the poops!

I thought you meant the area, which is extremely overrated. Not to mention the people that live there resemble the South Park Smug alert episode.

Electric car city

It is an interesting scenario, but there football programs still have a working class feel about them.

They have some brilliant junior development through schools and local competition. When my son played for Gymea Gorillas, I was very impressed with the love, passion & the number of teams they have.

But the truth is simple…. Carmens is always a popular place for a grope? 😱pen_mouth:

I wouldnt mind living there.
But I sacrificed location for what I could afford

It used to be great. I spent a lot of time there when I was younger, even though I lived in Strathfield. I would travel to Wanda Beach and Woolaware just about every weekend - had a lot of friends there and loved the beach and nightlife. Don't think I'd fancy it now though. Like all of Sydney it's probably changed beyond recognition.

If they're so good then why do they always pinch other teams' juniors? And seniors for that matter

Like most NRL Franchises, the desperate measures to winning a premiership sometimes see clubs not even recognise whats under their noses!

Why do players go there ? Money.

They have a history of money problems and it's not like anyone has publicly stepped in to bail them out a la Russell Crowe (that I know of anyway), so I'd like to know how they now can suddenly afford anyone they like - they are always mentioned as being in the running for the top players when they are off contract.

You make some very good points there and I suppose 5 years ago we at the WT used to laugh at the sharks and say that they were our team of rejects( TigerSharks )for old WT players to go to when they were no longer good enough to play at the WT.

How times have changed. But the significant problems with WT IMO has been the poor Mgmt & Administration of the Board and Football Club, the rotating door of the Head coach, killing our salary cap with stupid player contracts to under performing players, the general attitude of Us V Them - management V players and the fact that we donot really have a homeground as we play at 3 different venues and that in the longrun does not breed any form of strong homeground.

Its hard to compete when you have so many issues against better run clubs and the sharks are better run than the Tigers ATM.

We can only hope that within the next 12-24 months the club becomes more professional, sorts its issues out and breeds a culture where good players want to come and play.

Otherwise you will be asking the same question 5 years from now…..if we are around.

Just from general observation it looks like the Sharks admin has turned around even though there have been some hiccups eg dramas with nrl players and junior referees but generally the Board, CEO look to be pushing the club forward. In addition to this they have the major residential development on their land providing funds plus they have some quality players now who attract other quality players. The perception is that they are not the struggling club they were a few years ago which provides confidence in recruitment.

Cronulla offers them more money than where they are currently being paid. It doesn't matter regarding the supposed history of money problems. The players get paid their salaries.
