Who should our No. 9 be for 2021

Liddle gets first crack simply on experience, but I don't think he's good enough to be a starting hooker each week. Hopefully Simpkin shines in reserve grade and takes over the position by the end of the year.

back in the Halatau/Farah days in 05.
Sorry Speedie - Halatau did not share the Hooking job with Farah in 2005.
It was Galea first 6 rounds then Farah for 7, then Farah benched for 2 for Galea again then Farah Hooked for the rest of the Season.
Halatau started on the bench Rd 1 (Farah DNP) then he was Centre in our 2nd match vs Dogs (rd3 after the Bye) Then Bench for 3 games alongside Farah then DNP Rd 8, Bench for next 4, then DNP for next 5 Rds 12-16. He was Bench for Rds 17-22 Then 1 game as Centre then picked as Centre but benched for Collis return. Then Benched last 4 games of the For Against Season. Farah was on the Bench himself when Halatau DNP in Rd 14 & 15.
Quite simply, Dene did not share the hooking duties with Farah.
BTW Galea played Hooker 7 times 2R 5 times Bench 1 and seemed to have found his home at Lock for the last 10 games only to shift back to the 2R so Dene Halatau could lock the scrum for the final 4 games of the Finals period! What a massive pack we had back then!

My memory fades me then haha....I could have sworn they did, but I guess I may need to watch a few re runs

Dene was huge in that finals run.

No mate, what you saying is right. When Dene was playing lock they shared the dummy half role. Quite often Farah would take a run out of dummy half and then Dene would take the following one.

Dene was amazing in this role and I expected a team to copy that last season but it didn't happen.

The wrestle came in just after that . And I feel like there was some kind of rule change which brought us back to the pack . I could be misremembering though .

Exactly mate, after we won in 2005 there was an effort to slow the game down, this led to the introduction of the wrestle. Funnily enough the slowing of the PTB was an effort to reduce dummy half running in the game.

I really though with the 6 again rule that was introduced last year that a team would definitely try the dual dummy halves that we implemented in the 2005 final series.

With the widening of the 6 again rule I wouldn't be surprised to see a team try it in 2021.

It’s crazy when you think about it . The league finally off the back of benji , managed to engage with the fans and usher in a new generation, and they changed the game to slow him down . Such a tribalistic rugby league thing to do lol .
Edit; this was just 5 years removed from all the bad blood with mergers , and the Souths stuff etc . That season really got a lot of the “I’m never watching that garbage game again” old timers , back to the footy .

Along with the wrestle coaches also started focussing on patterns and structures around the markers and A defenders about that time. Made for boring completions footy and boring footy training. That’s what PVL is trying to undo now.

The big teams couldn't compete, had all the complaints about it the game becoming glorified touch football and 5 dummy half runs and kick etc. Funnily enough our game used dummy half running, but wasn't reliant on it. We shifted the ball well and scored some beautiful long range tries.

Ultimately I think the powers that be weren't happy with a Tigers Cowboys Grand Final.

My question is, is simpkins quick? I know liddle is so maybe madge will start with simpkins and bring liddle in when the opposition middle is getting tired? Unless simpkins is quick I feel he maybe used as more of a start the game type and bring liddle on to create that explosiveness out of dummy half. What are peoples thoughts?

I can't say this enough ....I was learning judo moves at training in the mid 80's .....ie Alfie's Cumberland throw / hip toss ...using what weight you did have along with the momentum of the bigger player to bring them down

Liddle probably starts and like when a young Farah took over from Robert Meares, Simpkin will get a bench spot and take over probably by halfway through 2021.
Hopefully come 2022 we have either B Smith or C McInnes

Up for grabs really, whoever the coach thinks is performing better and training better. Personally think it’ll be Liddle and Simpkin coming off the bench at some stage. Really hope Liddle can stay on the field for an extended period as he can play good footy.

I think Liddle gets the job and I think he will kill it. He is quick out of dummy half and he has crisp passing.

I can't see him playing 80 minutes per game over the course of the season consistently though so he is going to need a back-up.

McInnes would be great for us at lock. He could give Liddle a rest as well.

I think Liddle deserves first shot at 9 - when he's stayed on the field he has been good. Having said that, plenty of people will be tracking young Jake's development - he'll debut this year at some stage, it's just a question of when...
