Who should our No. 9 be for 2021

Jacob Liddle

I remember young Benji and the early injuries

I recall how some of the current gun hookers didn't really establish themselves till mid twenties.

Liddle has my support for the entire 2021 season (Barring injury or catastrophe)

Maguire won't select Simpkin unless he believes he is ready for the NRL. Farah is a tough competitor. I expect he will be doing everything he can to have Liddle and Simpkin prepared for the season. Personally, I'd like to see bith with a Robbie Farah kicking and tackling game as well as the wily runs out of dummy half. It's a great strategic move to have Farah involved in Simpkin's development. Can you imagine anything more painful for Qlders to come to terms thar potentially one of their best hookers was mentored by a NSW Origin star?

Farahs style is very suited to the new rules so it’ll be good having him there doing some coaching, very attacking minded dummy half.

Like him or not Farah was one of the very best,he always gave 100%.,That attitude is what Madge is expecting from this squad.

Liddle gets first crack simply on experience, but I don't think he's good enough to be a starting hooker each week. Hopefully Simpkin shines in reserve grade and takes over the position by the end of the year.

You're assuming there will be a "reserve grade". But, it's a no-brainer, Jacob Liddle is among the top 5 hookers in the NRL. I hope Maguire and others pick him and stick with him. He's a winner for us.

Top 5? Mate, he's not even top 10.

In your opinion. I disagree. It's allowed on here you know?

Didn't say it wasn't allowed, did I?

Jacob Liddle ready to excel at hooker for the Wests Tigers in 2021

Jacob Liddle knows he can compete with the NRL’s best players. Now he is ready to prove it after overcoming a series of injuries.

A FRESH and fit Jacob Liddle has declared it’s time for him to make the Wests Tigers’ No.9 jumper his own.

A knee injury and consecutive shoulder reconstructions have restricted Liddle to just 43 games since making his NRL debut for the Tigers in 2016.

But after completing his first full pre-season since 2017, Liddle is primed to start for the Tigers following Harry Grant’s return to Melbourne. Liddle will have to fend off some strong competition for the gig with youngster Jake Simpkin knocking on the door.

“I think this is my year. If it is not now, then when?” Liddle said. “I’m 24, I’ve got a big preseason under my belt, and I’m not just a rookie coming through anymore.

“I’m the strongest and fittest that I’ve ever been, so I’m really keen to rip in and give it my all.”

Liddle is leaning on his childhood hero, Tigers legend Robbie Farah, to help him reach his potential in 2021.

Farah is on the Tigers’ coaching staff this season, taking the time to pass on his knowledge to the club’s rising players.

Liddle has certainly benefited greatly from working side-by-side with the man he used to sit behind in the Tigers’ hooker pecking order.

“I’m learning heaps off Robbie,” he said.

“He has a world of knowledge as a hooker – he is one of the best in the game, so I take as much as I can from him.

“He gives me a lot of tips on everything from game management to kicking and passing.

“The hooker is one of the most important people on the field, so we have to be switched on.

“Robbie passes on all those little things that he has learnt from over the years.”

Liddle is also excelling under the guidance of coach Michael Maguire, who showed huge faith to re-sign him in 2019 on the back of limited NRL appearances and just before he suffered an ACL injury that ended his ’19 campaign.

It is why he is desperate to repay Maguire with consistent form this season.

“Madge’s support has been good – he re-signed me just before I did my knee injury,” he said.

“It has been great to have him as a coach. He has been really supportive of me.

“I was happy to stay at the Tigers. I’ve been at this club since I was 18 and I was excited to re-sign and prove myself to give back to the club for showing me all this support.

“I think Madge and I work well together, so hopefully we can have a good season.”

Liddle is also enthusiastic about how the Tigers are tracking under Maguire despite the club’s failure to make the finals since 2011.

“It has been really good that the club has supported Madge in what he is doing and the direction he is going in,” he said.

“I think we are just building a strong culture and he has signed a lot of boys who have really bought into what he is trying to do.”

Liddle nominated former Penrith skipper and premiership-winning Cowboy James Tamou as a standout in the pre-season.

“We needed a bit of a leader, so I think Jimmy has slotted into that role really well,” he said.

“He is a great bloke, and he is a person that you would want to follow, so I’m excited to have him as one of my front-rowers.”

back in the Halatau/Farah days in 05.
Sorry Speedie - Halatau did not share the Hooking job with Farah in 2005.
It was Galea first 6 rounds then Farah for 7, then Farah benched for 2 for Galea again then Farah Hooked for the rest of the Season.
Halatau started on the bench Rd 1 (Farah DNP) then he was Centre in our 2nd match vs Dogs (rd3 after the Bye) Then Bench for 3 games alongside Farah then DNP Rd 8, Bench for next 4, then DNP for next 5 Rds 12-16. He was Bench for Rds 17-22 Then 1 game as Centre then picked as Centre but benched for Collis return. Then Benched last 4 games of the For Against Season. Farah was on the Bench himself when Halatau DNP in Rd 14 & 15.
Quite simply, Dene did not share the hooking duties with Farah.
BTW Galea played Hooker 7 times 2R 5 times Bench 1 and seemed to have found his home at Lock for the last 10 games only to shift back to the 2R so Dene Halatau could lock the scrum for the final 4 games of the Finals period! What a massive pack we had back then!

My memory fades me then haha....I could have sworn they did, but I guess I may need to watch a few re runs

Dene was huge in that finals run.

No mate, what you saying is right. When Dene was playing lock they shared the dummy half role. Quite often Farah would take a run out of dummy half and then Dene would take the following one.

Dene was amazing in this role and I expected a team to copy that last season but it didn't happen.

The wrestle came in just after that . And I feel like there was some kind of rule change which brought us back to the pack . I could be misremembering though .

Exactly mate, after we won in 2005 there was an effort to slow the game down, this led to the introduction of the wrestle. Funnily enough the slowing of the PTB was an effort to reduce dummy half running in the game.

I really though with the 6 again rule that was introduced last year that a team would definitely try the dual dummy halves that we implemented in the 2005 final series.

With the widening of the 6 again rule I wouldn't be surprised to see a team try it in 2021.

I can't say this enough ....I was learning judo moves at training in the mid 80's .....ie Alfie's Cumberland throw / hip toss ...using what weight you did have along with the momentum of the bigger player to bring them down

I would not mess with you in a dark alley .. Judo dude !

Basically any modern NRL footballer could put you in a hold you would struggle to get out of ...they all do it now ....maybe not judo ...but some wrestling hold

Ok .....not trying to be negative ...but he says he is learning heaps from Farah

He has been with Farah for how many seasons now ...if he hasn't drained Robbie's brain already as well as Harry Grant's .....

Maybe Farah didn't want to pass on any info until after he finished playing.

Liddle was a threat until he stopped playing.

Wouldn’t put that past Farah. As much as he loves the club he’s always loved himself more

He’s also just in a coaching role now so it’s much easier to teach Liddle compared to when he was also training and playing.

There was a lot of talk about this in the NFL this year when the Packers drafted Jordan Love (QB) to sit behind Rodgers. Rodgers came out and said (paraphrasing) he liked the guy but its the coaches' job to coach, every player has their own training to do. You might give little pieces of advice here and there but that's not your job.
Farah is a pretty quiet guy and very competitive, while you want a collaborative environment you don't want guys not competing for positions, theres clearly a balance.
I hope Farah is helping Liddle with his kicking game and decision making close to the line, his running and passing are great and I think his defence is as good as it needs to be for a undersized hooker.

Yep . This is exactly what I was getting at .now Farah is a coach , he would be more willing to let go of any trade secrets , that may have kept him in a job .

Liddle is most likely our starting No. 9

I believe Liddle is a very talented player who has been very unlucky with injury. He is very quick off the mark and offers great service at dummy half. I have not seen much of a kicking game from him but unless he has two left feet he shouldn't have much trouble developing that skill - he may not be a great but at least a threat enough to keep opposition D in two minds. I think he will surprise a few this year if he can stay injury free.

Harry Grant had a great break out season and i think he has tremendous skill but i think he has a long way to go before he becomes the messiah. I think this coming season we will see him either push on or come back a peg or two. I believe his game has flaws and IMO last year he had no real pressure on him.

He come to us on loan to gain experience always knowing he was going back - no pressure. He played SOO in team that wasn't rated by most and was most likely told to go out there and just play - No pressure.

Lets see what this season holds for him when he is playing for the defending premiers in what was Cammy's spot for a full 80 mins week in week out.

Agree, Grant is going to have soo much expectation on his shoulders this year, will be interesting to see how that gets handled. Storm have a few question marks around their future right now, Bellamy likely going after this year, Smith in two minds about this year. No doubt they will make the 8 again (Munster is currently the best player in the game) but I wouldn't be that surprised to seem them around the 6th or 7th mark.

He will also have a much stronger forward pack around him and a much better spine. Should result in better opportunity for him to attack which is his best attribute. Bellamy will get the best out of him for sure, they’ll finish top 2 most likely I think

Who cares. I don’t see Harry Grants name on the Wests Tigers roster. No longer a Tiger so I hope he has a horrid year.

I’d go with the Rookie Simpkin. Has some experienced players around him in Tamou, Ofehengaue,Twal, Brooks.

If he’s not ready it’s only a matter of time before it happens has more talent in his left finger than Liddle.

Unfortunately you need two hands to pass the ball properly and not just a left finger (you didn't specify which one).

If he can do that with one finger - maybe he can get a job in the circus. Lol!
