WT Ownership, The Board & Senior Management - MEGA Thread

Although I can't stand the bloke, Phil Rothfield made a comment about our CEO a very long time ago which has stuck in my mind.

Around 2016-2017, Rothfield said he "didn't rate" our CEO and, from memory, said he "wasn't a smart operator".

The fullness of time has proven this to be a fairly accurate call.

For a long time, our CEO has run on the fuel of PR which proclaimed to the world that he was able to turn the club around financially from running at a loss to making a profit.

Ever heard the saying "a rising tide lifts all boats"? Well, guess what? Pretty much every NRL club has been able to do the same due to increased funding flowing into the sport.

Taking that out of the equation, the club has seemingly achieved very little during his time.

We've had coaches walking in and out the door like we're running a fish and chip shop, we had a major salary cap breach, we've struggled to retain our half decent players and our junior development program has hit the skids since we saw Brooks, Tedesco, Moses and Woods pull on a jersey.

Firing the CEO won't magically turn things around, but the board need to take a good hard look at whether the CEO and structure we have is going to get us to where we want to be in the next five years.

So if he is absolved from the football program, then where does it fall? Coaches? Inbetweeners? Are they all just treading water for the domino to fall so they can start knifing each other?
We've had a huge turnover of coaches under his leadership. Who makes these calls?
Gus didn’t say he was absolved from it. Nor did I.
Mearly stating he is under qualified to provide expert input in this area.
This has been the argument all along and why our fans are divided on the topic.
As a Corporate CEO Pascoe succeeds as a Professional Sporting Entity CEO he under delivers.

To add that. I direct the blame to the business not understanding what is required.
And frankly it could actually be down to Marina Go being appointed Chairman without a clue about sport or football in general.

That’s not the point you made.
You stated it was 100% on Cleary.
Please provide published statements from Ivan where he said Nathan was coming across.
That's not in fact what I said, I said

"I will definitely spare Pascoe much criticism for the signings in 2018 - that's 100% Ivan Cleary".

I do consider those recruits and how they performed for the club as 100% a criticism for Ivan Cleary. I'm not interested in Kelly Egan or Pascoe counter-signing the decisions.

And if we are going to go the level that we must provide published statements from anyone for any rumour, that's fine by me, but let's apply it consistently to the whole website in every case. I am going to monitor every post you make and ask for a quote.

Anyway what you are looking for is not a quote from Cleary, it's a quote from club persons because I said "he gave the club every impression".

That's what I'm saying....
The financial side of the club seemingly has all it's ducks lined up to be successful.
The football side hasn't, but it's direction seems to be determined by the financial side.
If Pascoe isn't the one making these calls then where does the buck lie?

Corey Parker on WT
💯 Agree

Good on you Corey for calling that out.

I was having the discussion with guys at work one a Panthers fan and one a Bulldogs fan and they were questioning the lack of effort and interest shown by our players.
I replied the guys are trying, there is effort there and personally I think they are trying what they believe to be their best.
The problem is the club and team have not woken up to the fact that their best is just not good enough and it needs to be better to be a competitive club in the most competitive rugby league comp in the world.
I might upset some in mentioning this however over the past Decade only 2 club personal hired by Wests Tigers knew this was the case.
Ivan Cleary and Madge Maguire.
Cleary saw that it was a bridge too far and jumped ship in the opposite direction.
Madge knew it was a long road ahead and was prepared to ride out every bump along the way.

Now 2023 we have 3 out of 4 coaches that exceeded in attacking football and were frankly quite poor in initiating defence and another who is a defensive coaching specialist that just hasn’t had any success since the game was sped up by Peter Valandys.

Tim thought he could re imagine us being a 2004-2005 team with the personal and playing style but failed to acknowledge that since he left the Game in 2012 every premiership since has won their season on the back of rock hard defence.

I thought blowing the club up and starting again was basically what Tigers did in 2022? And we did it before that in 2000 (the start of the merge) and 2014 (the restructure where Wests took control).

I am not clear what Corey Parker is proposing. It's all well and good to destroy something, which is easy, but what do you do next?

I think it’s time for the club to relocate. By trying to be everything to everybody they’ve become nothing to nobody. Even the name from the start. Who actually thinks that ‘wests tigers’ doesn’t sound ridiculous? The arrranged marriage hasn’t worked. The clubs they have tried to keep the memory alive of are dead. Time to move on. And don’t get me started on the board. Congratulations for managing to turn a buck by running a pokie palace in the suburbs with desperate people pouring their wages into a rigged slot machine. What an innovative and cutting edge business you run!

Delving deeper you will find those signings were the result of a three person committee of Ivan Cleary, Justin Pascoe and Kelly Egan. Heard it straight from the horses mouth on radio when Kelly Egan was discussing how they came about to the Josh Reynolds signing.
Thanks for putting some much-needed common sense into this argument @Needaname 👍

We have hoon the wrong job just to get him through the doors. We needed someone to make us more profitable but because we're so undesirable we couldn't offer him a CCO position, we had to go the whole CEO. A position for which he isn't qualified, and has subsequently failed every year he's been at the club.

He isn't there just to make money, he is the leader of the club, commercially and in football. His position covers everything, and no doubt he's aware of his shortcomings and tries to help out the football department to enhance those skills. But he still keeps failing and he's simply not got to be our ceo, he just doesn't have the full skillset required
'Maybe' 1 step at a time @balmain boy
Get the right person in to get Us onto a secure financial footing which Pascoe has done.
Then get the right guy/gal as an all-round Football Manager to continue to secure Our financials plus building the Footy side of things.

Don’t disagree with you except to say every team with a Leagues Club is a pokie haven so they all qualify as a non innovative and non cutting edge business.
We have lots of issues but that one is just the way of the world.

A de-merger? Who stays on, Wests or Balmain?
