WT v Knights round 1 ‘25 predictions

You need to move up and slide with the play on the edges, make sure the defensive line is evenly spread and not overly compressed, no heros rushing out of the line, the roosters were backpeddling giving the knights more space to attack. Never laced a footy boot but that's what I think.
It’s not about rushing up , it’s about forcing the tbh , less talented players to do all the decision making . Keep the ball in thier hands and out of Pongas.

How do you do that considering the fullback creates an overlap?
You have described a slide defence and plenty of teams use it and it makes it more difficult for opposition teams to create an overlap because the defending players work together to move laterally across the field, sliding in unison. This is used to combat and attacking team that uses a lot of width in theri attack, The defenders move side to side, maintaining their spacing to cover the entire width of the field, making it difficult to break the line. It is used to cutting off the attaacking options and forcing them towards the sideline and also helps to deal with the 3 on 2 situation with the cover defenders and sideline used to deal with the overlap. The big disadvantge is that it gives the oppositon time and space = speed and momentum. You trade risk for ground.

We are primarily using an up and in defence similar to Penrith and Melbourne; it is a more aggressive, pressure-based strategy. In this system the aim is to shut down the attack by getting up in their face. Indoing so you don't give the play makers time to act or players like Ponga or Best the room to move. The down side, as you have seen in both trials, is that when you misread the play or fail to engage decisively (Lobb) here can be a large gap created for an attacking player to exploit. Fitness and cover is an essentail component.

We should have the ability to switch as required, but the game plan agaisnt Ponga and Best, with aweaker centre pairing shoudl be up and in to limit opportunities in attack.

I triust this clarifies how to best stop the fullback from swweong effectively.

It’s a combination though . They have to be adaptable like jolls said. .like I said the idea should be to keep the ball in coggers hands as much as possible .
A rushing / up and in defence means your susceptible to the kick in behind , cutout balls , basically anything to exploit the defence shoulders being turned in away from the edges .
But that’s kind of what you want with a weaker halves pairing. It forces them into situations where you want them to take the chances . Like trying to give free drugs to a junkie “ come on man .. you know you want to chuck that 4 man face ball . Oh common mate you’d really love that kick in behind”.
You’d obviously never run this tactic against DCE . It would be 40 nil at halftime .

Exactly; horses for courses and field location. Look forward to seeing a four man face ball picked off in two weeks!

Not having Bula would be massive.

Missing two centres and two of our starting spine would be a tough ask

I think underestimating Sharpe and Cogger could be very detrimental
Definitely not; I very much doubt that either of them would throuw a four man face ball against an up and in defence. However, if they did it woudl be great to see. We simply need to put pressure on them from the inside and take time ans space away from their ball runners. Execute our defence well and we are half way to winning the match. Give Best and Ponga room and we will struggle.

Sharpe is very quick and always in support. He creates an overlap for himself!

We can't afford to be lazy in the middle or it will cost us. Line speed, inside pressure and shutting the gate are the foundation of all good defensive structures. If he has time and space we will allow him to dictate the terms of the engagement. We need to take that away from him as much as possible - there are times that we won't so the commitment to our cover is our insurance.
