WTF – Wests Tigers Faithful Podcast

Based on his 40m individual try scored while playing NSW Cup late last season, he looks to have plenty of pace and agility for a forward and as you say, has the perfect body shape for a modern day 2RF.
The only question mark would be defence as it is quite a specialised role defending on an edge and if the player makes bad defensive reads it ends up a disaster.
Time in reggies will test if he's up for it, gets found out there and its back to the pigs

Providing unfettered access to Wests Tigers apologists the world over, Joe McCord and Jarrod Reedie have the pleasure of hosting Wests Tigers Player #112 and club Pathways & Recruitment Manager, Shannon Gallant, who provides us with some incredible insights into the world of junior representative football.

We also review the week that was for our Harold Matts and SG Ball sides.

Great interview with Shannon Gallant

Well Done Boys and Well done WTs

I was so impressed by the fact that our club has 2x Feeder systems and that the Wests Tigers are creating A CULTURE where young players aspire to play for the Wests Tigers.

Every body needs to listen

Another great job boys. So good to hear from the horse's mouth what's happening in our pathways. It appears our future is in good hands and Richo and his team have us heading in the right direction. I trust we get to see the results of this investment in our NRL team in the not too distant future.

Enjoyed the wrap of the junior games too.

Looking forward to hearing from Tim and Noel later in the week!

Firstly love the pod lads. I am sure Shannon was just keeping his cards close to his chest but when he said we don’t recruit from outside of our region was extremely alarming, in fact if that is the case that is scouting negligence and whoever made that decision needs to either change that rule or change clubs. The Panthers are rated to have the best juniors but their scouts are everywhere. I am sure he was only saying we don’t go to Queensland carnivals to recruit as to not give to much away but I found it very concerning if that is true

So much for being a development club if we are limiting ourselves like that... Though I guess if they feel there's enough to work with in both districts who's to say that ain't enough

Given that he was dicussing juniors living in "club homes" from QLD and NZ we are definitely recruiting from outside of our area. I expect he meant that we focus on our local competitions but are not blind to talent from outside of the area.

Didn’t he say they recruited the centre who shut down Makasini from NZ?

The NZ guy is one of the fellas I was referring to. I took away from the interview that we aren't limited in our recruiting but we are focussed on developing our own as the primary means of building the roster. The other key takeawy was that they are constantly loking at the growth path vased on the NRL roster requirements to identify shortfalls - from that I took it to mean that if we lack talent in a specific area in our juniors we actively recrut from outside to provide roster balance. It appears, from that short insight, that we are focussed on developing a workable system.

The trouble with a lot of these types of systems is that the identification and recruitment depends a lot on the personalities that are running the programme. Betsey and Shannon appear to have us heading in the right direction so I'm happy with where we are heading at present.

for the record, this is what I took away as well.

I gathered we do some recruitment but he also mentioned they watch tapes, which suggests agents or parents sending in tapes which happens everywhere. Those carnivals can unearth some great talent

I recall when I was a kid having Penrith scouts turning up at certain games, and schoolboy carnivals scouting players for junior reps. I expect a lot of that is now done by video which allows more ground to be covered.

Guaranteed at junior level a lot of this is still done by word of mouth and parents in postions of power promoting their juniors. Sending tapes to development officers is just the way of the wold now.
