Left school after year 10,got an apprenticeship as a Fitter and Machinist at the Small Arms Factory Lithgow.
Was there for 7 and a half years, left to work as a mechanical fitter in an underground coalmine, clocked up almost 25 years when they closed the mine on the 27th of march this year, coincidently was the same day I had a fall and fractured my skull.
No alcohol was involved in case you were wondering,it was early morning.
I am still in recovery mode but feeling much better, the headaches that were there all day are only there for a short time after I wake up each morning now,my inner ear is still full of dried blood which is very annoying.
Doctors say I have to wait for it fall out naturally, which is not fast enough for my liking, feeling much better now and looking forward to my new job.
I will start a new job in correctional services on monday,I am keen for a change after doing fitting my entire career, the job is casual but I am hoping it will become full time as I could see myself staying there until I retire, which unfortunately is a way off.
Have enjoyed reading the life and times of our fellow forumers, and what a talented and diverse bunch you all are,I think far smarter than the average NRL fan.

very interesting read 851\. like many others here, i wish you all the very best in your recovery (great news from the doc i have just read youll likely be all better in a couple of weeks) and enjoy your posts on here.

Slightly off subject , but I was listening to Merrick on the radio today talking about Ice and talking to users on the radio

Maybe I'm very naïve , but I had no idea how quickly people become hooked to the stuff

Stay away from this stuff or any other drugs everyone

The WT's are our high

Yes very addictive Happy. Of all the other Amphetamines ( base, speed) Ice is the most pure form.
When ice is used, the receptors in the brain are flooded with Monoamines. With frequent use these receptors can be destroyed, and prolonged ice use can lead to a point, when the user no longer feels pleasure without further Ice use.
At the hospital we treat quite a few Ice overdoses and Ice related injuries. Some physical, psychological or in some cases both.
Extra security is required when dealing with Ice patients, as they can be agressive and violent, requiring sedation and physical restraint. Scary stuff. :frowning:

its awful isnt it? my sister is a theatre nurse and told me quite some time ago that a colleague of hers had treated Ben Cousins and said that he is really messed up. its been so sad seeing a young man like him with so much fall prey to such a horrible drug.

it really annoys me when people just dismiss people who develop a problem with drugs, etc. because one bad choice and you can so easily be sucked into a black hole of dependency. i thank god that for all the stupid things ive ever done ive never tried anything like it; im too scared to anyway!!!

great to see the likes of you willow doing such great work trying to rid our society of this cancer.

Some interesting responses here, keep them coming.

Well , add yours then Willow

Currently working drug investigations at the moment but I was recently specialising in cyber crime which was very interesting. At the end of the day, I find it a very rewarding and interesting job.

I could have really used someone like you recently when some a-wipe hacked into my bank account. Luckily I picked up on it early in the piece. Someone, somehow got in and set up a pay pal account then started to spend up. Interestingly, they went into my business account, transferred funds across to my personal account and marked it as wages to make things look normal, then withdrew form there via pay pal. These jerks are clever and bloody sneaky. By chance I noticed it the day after it occurred, otherwise, things could have got out of control really quickly.

Boilermaker/welder by trade - apprenticeship at Port Kembla - mostly general maintenance, but later in life moved to Perth and worked both on mine sites (fifo) and in the city building those enormous buckets for mining industry equipment. After severely injuring my back whilst swinging a sledge hammer, I've moved out of that field and now own a franchise business. I clean tiles, rejuvenate bathrooms by way of tile replacement, glass restoration, silicone replacement, grout replacement, leaking shower repair, tile and grout sealing etc.I've owned my business for 3 & 1/2 years & I enjoy it.

Over the years, I've done lots of things including real estate sales for 8 years, room addition and patio sales, I've been manager of a hostel for backpackers for 2 years in Scotland, I've done landscaping, security work, cleaning, bar work, lawn mowing, poly urethane flooring and more.

I'm still trying to work out what I want to do when I grow up. At 45, I hope to work it out soon.

wd in perth, you will work it out, keep going the way you are and enjoy life as best you can…..

An old friend once told me "ANY DAY ABOVE GROUND IS A GOOD DAY"how true it is...cheers mate...

Dear 851, Demps, Underdog, foreveratiger, Flippedy, Tigermama, Cultured Bogan, True Tiger and fulleightyminutes. (and anyone else i may have forgotten).

this afternoon i broke a rule of the petrol station i work at by a) not having my phone turned off, and b) actually accepting a phone call whilst at work.

the reason i am telling you this amazingly boring little tidbit?:
the phone call was one i had been waiting for since an interview i had on Monday morning and the lovely voice on the other end had indeed as i hoped called me to offer the civil designer role i went for.

it is unfortunately not a guaranteed full time permanent role, but in my industry and this climate that is a very rare thing indeed, and the early indications are it has a good chance of becoming so in a little time.

i hope this doesnt seem too self indulgent, but the very kind words of support and thumbs ups i received after posting in this thread really meant a lot to me and it may sound weird, but it made me feel i had a lot of positivity on my side in my search. my long, long search!!!

98% of the time i have a frivolous attitude but sometimes a sincere, heart felt thank you is appropriate.

thank you all.

Programmer

It's not all sex and riding horses,

Spend most of my time automating mundane tasks, frees up time for other employees to do the parts of their job that they love doing,

e.g. We used to send monthly reports for our clients, Account managers would have to collect information from 4 different sources, graph them and analyze these 400 reports manually, would take the first week of the month to be sent by Friday.

Spent about 2 months writing up this program (in secret), and just announced it at our weekly meetings when it was completed.

Nothing quite like building something that makes other people's lives easier.

Of course, the downside to this is when you get new people who start and don't know the old ways and piss an moan about how long these automated reports take to run (about 5-20 minutes each, but 400 adds up to several days) and how they are shit. * :unamused:

So you get the good and the bad. Still fun though,

its really satisfying doing a job that helps people isnt it? even if often it isnt understood or appreciated as much as it could be, it is still a good feeling.

good on you sataris.

I write for film and TV. Industry has changed a lot in past 10 years, there's no 'full time' jobs on Tv shows anymore - we are all freelance. But I can manage my own time, (can work at night) and so look after the kids etc. Best job in the world if a bit insecure financially sometimes.

PS - Found all this really interesting. Good idea Demps

That film you wrote recently, where can I see it as I see the trailer for it and looks like a good film

_Posted using RoarFEED 4.2.0_

Cheers Westy! Am actually in Edinburgh for UK premiere of the movie called 'Cut Snake'. Been good response so far. Fun town. Just back from Manchester where I saw Matt Bowen in the shopping mall, no being recognised or mobbed (still looks pretty fit!). Thanks, here's the trailer. Out in Oz soon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6IsEprtJXA4

thank you all.

dear everyone again.

well, its been quite an eventful last few weeks for this little wtfer… after a week or so of being in my new (temp) job, i received a phone call from the principal civil engineer at a brisbane company i had been interviewed by for a role a couple of months ago.

the role was exactly what i could have hoped, as the company needed someone to do exactly what (i consider) my strong points are as a civil designer - the Digital Terrain Modelling software used and working in a lead role within a design and drafting team - and the projects they work on and company values really mirror what i love about my career; improving infrastructure and civil design with a strong importance placed upon local cultures and ecosystems.

the projects they anticipated being signed off on didnt come through in the time they had thought, and so their employment process was put on hold. but after a few calls keeping me in the loop, on friday i received a call and was told that they had gained projects, and had been given the go ahead to offer me the job.

i got the contract and role description today and in four weeks time i will be in my new role, in my new life in brisbane. after two years of applying for jobs, doing everything i could in the mean time, i finally have my career back!

itll be hard to leave the petrol station (*coughs*) but i am very excited, happy and grateful things have turned out as they are now. ive had amazing support from my family and friends, and would like to say thanks again to all of you for your kind words and thoughts.

 :sign:
