Super League coach of the year Mick Potter expected to be hot property on his return to Australia

Mick Potter's dedication to Bradford has been recognised after he was named Super League coach of the year.

The Australian stayed on at Odsal in a voluntary capacity after being made redundant by the club's administrators in July and would have taken the Bulls to the play-offs for the first time in four years had the club not been docked six points for breaching the Rugby Football League's solvency regulations.

Potter, 49, has now returned home to Australia to seek a new job after turning down the offer of a new contract from the new Bradford club.

The former Catalans, St Helens and now Bradford coach is expected to be hot property in the NRL as an assistant or even head coach.

Potter has not coached at senior level in Australia but has extensive playing history having made three State of Origin appearances for NSW and played more than 200 club games for Canterbury-Bankstown, St George and Western Reds.

In a glittering awards ceremony in Manchesters, Wigan full-back Sam Tomkins was crowned Super League Man of Steel.

The England international, twice a winner of the young-player-of-the-year award, won the prestigious prize ahead of St Helens hooker James Roby and Warrington second row forward Ben Westwood.

Both Tomkins and Roby, who won in 2007, were shortlisted for the award last season but lost out to Rangi Chase, the Castleford and England half-back.

This time Tomkins emerged top of a secret ballot of his fellow Super League players as the man deemed to have made the biggest impact on the season.

Leeds full-back Zak Hardaker was named young player of the year after a hugely impressive first full season in Super League in which he will cap an ever-present record in Saturday's Grand Final against Warrington.

Potter could be worth a shot, depending on price tag of course. I wouldn't be surprised to see Walters end up getting the gig though.

The more I hear about him the more I like.

He is back in the country and Im really hoping we can get him.

He has excellent experience in the ESL.

Agree ! It seems every club he goes to he turns that club around and has success, twice ESL coach of the year, Potter was Super League Coach of the Year after guiding the Catalans to a third-place finish in 2008, 12 months after taking them to the Challenge Cup final, and he steered St Helens to the Grand Final in each of his two seasons at Knowsley Road.has been working without pay since being made redundant by the administrators on July 2.

we have the advantage in 2013 in that we have half a coach on the field already in Anasta- cool head, we only really need half a coach in the stands. Mick Potter fits the bill. Did somebody say that he is in town?

Rather have an 100% percent player on the field than half a coach AHX sorry

Yeh i see Happy, however we are rudderless on the field. We've had 100% players last year & where did it get us?

Tunksy mentioned on 2sm today, the whispers he was hearing was Potter to coach the Tigers. Id be happy with that. Or even Potter to the Dragons and we end up with Folkes.

Apart from the NZ Warriors who else has a vacancy? I can't see St George punting their guy after one season.

Dual coaches. Taylor attack, Folkes defence , Payten assistant.

that sounds like a very workable senario

Sheens would be a perfect fit for the Warriors. He would let them do what they do best and throw the ball around. I reckon he could do good things over there

Potter reckons he could weave magic as Tigers coach
>
SUPER LEAGUE coach of the year Michael Potter has expressed an interest in the vacant Wests Tigers job after returning home to Australia.
>
Potter, who was yesterday voted the best coach in Super League by his peers at rival clubs after his efforts with Bradford this year, turned down an offer from the Bulls' new owners and wants a job in the NRL.
>
While yet to speak to anyone at the Tigers since the club decided last week to move Tim Sheens into a different role, Potter said he would be keen to do so if there was a chance he could get the coaching job.
>
''If I am asked I would certainly go and talk to the people at Wests Tigers,'' Potter told the Herald. ''They play a good brand of footy and it would be a good opportunity. There is no point throwing your hat in the ring if you are not asked because jobs aren't like that in rugby league, I don't think. But if they wanted to talk to me I would be happy to do so.''

After seven years in charge of Catalans, St Helens and Bradford, Potter feels he has something to offer as an NRL coach but would consider an assistant's role.
>
''I would like to think there are some jobs around, even as an assistant,'' he said. ''The NRL is the premier competition and if I can get an opportunity to help someone out I will do it.''
>
''I have been coaching since 1997 [at Illawarra] so it has been a while. I like doing it and without boasting I think I am quite good, and I have got a couple of little niches that I think I am very good at.
>
''I think I am able to get the best out of players and improve them individually. I think I have shown that in the years I have been over in England and France.''
>
After being appointed as Catalans foundation coach in 2006, Potter steered the Perpignan-based club to the Challenge Cup final the following season and third place in Super League in 2008.
>
He also took St Helens to successive grand finals in 2009 and 2010 and missed the play-offs this season with Bradford only because the club was docked six points for being placed into administration.
>
''I just need an opportunity and for someone to say, 'You're the bloke to take us forward','' Potter said.
>
''I don't think I have left a team in worse shape than when I started.''
>
The Herald has been told a sub-committee appointed last week is still preparing of short list of candidates, while reviewing other positions on the Tigers coaching staff - including a role for Sheens.
>
Parramatta-bound assistant Matt Parish, Sydney Roosters under-20s coach Jason Taylor and Melbourne deputy Kevin Walters have also been linked to the job.
>
Meanwhile, former Melbourne and Manly halfback Matt Orford is also looking for a coaching position within the NRL.
>
Orford, who did not play this year after an injury-ravaged season with Canberra last year, has done his level-two coaching certificate and was involved in a playmakers academy organised by Phil Gould for elite Penrith juniors.
