You do what you can to get yourself fired up ,and he is trying to do the best he can for himself ,family and on occasion this country He uses a particular comment from a scene from Rocky 2

He dropped everything to help young Lleyton , the young kid who supported the WT's who was doing it tough and our own players did the same after a particular game

I can understand why some mightn't like him , but he has every right to do the best for himself and use whatever means to do so

He still thinks he can match it with the big names , good on him for never giving up

I wouldn't mind if every WT's player had his ticker every match What happened in Townsville wouldn't happen that's for sure

Couldn't agree more, mate. I really don't understand all the Hewitt hate over the years. The guy is an absolute champion, who always gives it his best in _every_ match he plays. What the hell is wrong with showing some emotion and firing himself up on the court? We love it when our footy players do it, the best sportspeople in the world always do it - why can't he?

Its called the tall poppy syndrome

Tall poppy syndrome? the guy would be lucky to be ranked in the top 100 and has been steadily declining since 2005 when Federer, Nadal and to a lesser extent Djokovic began dominating. , He's been a non factor in tennis for a long time, except for 2 weeks a yr when channel 7 try to make him relevant and talk him up during the Australian Open. So not too sure why he'd be considered a tall poppy. Tired of this mentality that we're suppose to like people just cos they're Australian. There are lots of people in my life who i don't like who aren't famous and they are my fellow countrymen. Don't know why different rules should apply to people who have a high profile.

So you don't like the guy because Channel 7 push his barrow for two weeks a year …...............

And that makes him a tool ...............

God help any WT's if they kick a field goal to win a game for us in golden point and they celebrate is all I can say GNR

Actually our whole side runs out to a well known psych up song

You know I love ya GNR , but sometimes I question why LOL

I got no problem with him getting fired up. The problem i have is when he's intimidating linesmen and calling umpires spastics. And people can't understand why others think he's a tosser.

You must dislike a hell of a lot of sportsmen

Never realized he had called an umpire a spastic

''May 2001: Hewitt is fined US$1000 for calling chair umpire Andres Egli a "spastic" during a French Open fourth round match. Hewitt apologises, but declines an invitation from the Spastic Centre of Australia to visit one of its centres. "It's a great shame that having spasticity, which is one of the major conditions associated with having cerebral palsy, should be used in such a derogatory way," says Spastic Centre chief executive Rob White.''

This is a good one too

''September 2001: Hewitt is accused of racism during a match against African-American opponent James Blake at the US Open. Upset at twice being foot-faulted, Hewitt approached the umpire demanding the linesman in question - also an African-American - be changed. "Look at him", Hewitt said, gesturing first at Blake and then at the linesman, "look at him and you tell me what the similarity is". Hewitt insists there were no racial overtones in his outburst, escapes punishment and wins the tournament, beating Pete Sampras in the final.''

As someone who works with children with disabilities and who has a disability myself, the ''spastic'' comment was as low as they come. Then to decline the invitation to try and redeem himself and show that he stuffed up only made my opinion of him even lower.

I wouldn't say that was entirely correct, GNR. He has almost single-handedly kept the Australian tennis flame flickering for the past 10 years. He is still competitive in tournaments, has been brilliant in the Davis Cup rounds and, most notably, he has been a great mentor and inspiration to many of the young guys, who are finally coming through and playing decent tennis now - just ask them.

Of course you don't have to like him as a person, no one is asking you to, but as a sportsman, I think he deserves some accolades and a bit of respect for his incredible will to win and his achievements, past and present.

Lleyton falls into the category of Robbie Farah for me.

Talented and has more ticker than Phar Lap, and I love to watch them both do what they do best.

Wouldn't necessarily have a beer with him though - I've met them both for roughly equal amounts of time, and I think their intense personalities rub me the wrong way.

Sorry mate , I didn't realize that and I apologize for pushing you on it

I understand where you are coming from now

And yeah, my dislike for the man probably blinds me to his abilities as a player, but that's only human nature i guess.

My Unpopular opinions
1\. The game (all games) and players were not better in the past, rose colored glasses remind us of only the highlights of bygone eras.
2\. The refs are no where near as bad as the media makes out. 100 slow motion cameras makes it impossible, varying views of how the rules should be implemented, biased fans and commentators who don't like the rules makes their job impossible.
3\. Shane Flannagan and James Hird should have got life bans, if they were Chinese swim coaches we would be screaming blue murder with the leniency they were shown. Players also got off ridiculously light.
4\. Rugby league is not any better than any other sport, I hate that league fans take a view that all other sports are lesser games, league fans are the worst for thinking every other game is rubbish, I love the game, it is my favourite game, but other people love different sports. We can learn from many sports.
5\. Paul Gallen and Greg Bird despite being good at what they do, are also part of the reason their teams lose. Both have a history of losing at all levels except test. Bird makes way too many mistakes and gives away way to many penalties this shifts momentum in games and costs his team game. Gallen runs the ball on 4th and 5th tackle more than anyone in the comp. He should never (well rarely) run than, it is great for stats, not for winning games.
6\. Johnathan Thurston is a very good player, but over rated. If he was really the best player in the world he would have got the cowboys into the top 4 on a regular basis given the squad he has. He is a highlight reel with loads of talent, but not a terrific week in, week out player.
