Luciano Leilua

If we did that, we would be the worst club in the world. Imagine if we ask Papali'i to not play WC due to risk of injury.
Tigers will somehow get blamed for that as well just wait.

"Due to the tigers jumping the gun and immediately releasing an underperforming player who asked for said immediate release, Cowboys have had no choice but to forcibly remove Luciano from the Samoan team."

According to NQ we announced his release to them before it was fully finalised
Thats exactly what the facts suggest
Reading between the lines...Sheens had a dummy spit over LLs lack of effort last w/e(and quite ritely)..was aware of the Cowboys interest..and pulled the trigger in disgust without setting everything in stone
Unprofessional..but I do understand

Thanks for this insight. I do find it salary cap discussion interesting.
The salary cap is an animal that I’m not convinced the tigers have tamed. I think the roosters are the bench mark and as an aside, I think the NRL seem to allow a lot of fluidity with player values using the roosters as an example. We just don’t do it right.
The Roosters have nailed it.
They set an average salary for the life of the term for the player. Then when they are in their final year or wanted by another club that backload all the money to that departing player. Knowing full well that higher the cost of the departing playing in his final season enables them to hit the market with a war chest.
Where as a team like the tigers is running around crying about having a player on 1mil instead of his market value of 550/600k the Roosters are loving that situation.
Wait till you see how much cap money they have available if they don’t resign Angus and Hargreaves retires!

Now this makes us look bad - direct quotes from Payten on what has happened.

We did jump the gun with the release. Very unprofessional of us.

It's interesting though that the Cowboys GM said they approach Lucy manager but Payten said we approach them

"We got a call out of the blue from the Tigers' recruitment the day before yesterday. We had to look at our figures and within 45 minutes to an hour we gave them a call back and verbally agreed. Within 45 minutes to an hour there was a public statement put out by the other party.

"It's not signed off on yet, but I expect it will be.

"There are still some things to happen. He needs to get a medical, he needs to sign his termination clause, and we haven't actually drawn up a contract yet either. That's what's happened and that's where it's at."

More interesting is the agreement between us and Lucy.

They say he hasn’t signed his termination clause, but we don’t know if that’s true or whether he actually needs to. That depends on the contract.

They tell us that they want him, they haven’t checked him properly medically and don’t have a written contract with him. Very poor recruitment practices. Really basic things to get right.

If anything, I’m surprised we took 45 minutes to announce it. It should have been done in 5

That Payton and their CEO have different version of events, suggests they don’t have their story straight either.

I’m more than comfortable with our conduct in this matter.

They were agitating for his release not us and they blew it.

It’s not our problem, they deserve each other.

Tigers 1, Cows 0.

It's just the cows deflecting. It's not our responsibility to ensure they have drafted the contract or when or where they wanted to medical. We've done nothing wrong other than release a star player for free, if we haven't received anything in exchange it's just incredibly poor business.

I don't care about the cowboys side of it, but if it's true he hasn't signed his release yet we shouldn't have announced it yet either. He can't sign a contract for this year with the cowboys until he is formally released.

We need to start ignoring the gossip reporters and do things like that anyway. Be stoic not weak.

If a player asks for a release for teh 4th time, and you eventually give it to him you don't expect him to sit around on it for a few days.

What we are going to find us that these reports are agenda based usually to re-assure fans that things are under control.

In this case, the narrative was that the cows have signed him without the cash.

So the cows have to reassure their fans they are not that stupid.

But they told us that they want him and we try to seize the day.

Why they told us they wanted him without doing their due diligence is remarkable.

I tend to think he’s already held out to us he wants out, one way or the other and we are using that too. Whether that’s all legal, we need to see the contract.

But nothing to see at Concord I think.

We said do you want him, they said yes and we said as far as we are concerned then he’s released. That’s probably how it went.

Now it’s likely he doesn’t have a contract if what they say is true. If I was them, I’d offer him a reduced rate now. They have him painted into a corner. Suits them fine I’d say. He’s been duped.

May have cost him a rep game too

Yeah, sort change a player you've just signed for the next three years. [This word has been automatically removed]en genius

I don't care about the Cowboys but I think from reading that is was unfair on Luc. He also said that he was gutted and didn't want to leave us and let down his teammates or the fans.

He has been one of our best performers since he got here.

It's not a big deal to me but it doesn't sit right. Same as the Madge sacking.

Still fans seem to want them to be ruthless and they appear to be doing that.

It's a non issue to me other than the treatment of Luc.

This to me has always been the problem with this decision.

Just listen to joffa interview on the tigers website. He said Luciano has been playing injured. That's been the problem with Madge. He always played players with injuries or not fully fit. It has a big out come on games and big out come on a players form and confidence. Luc form speaks for it self.
That’s not Fadges biggest problem. His issues relate to not recognising when players aren’t 80 minute players, and how to use the bench effectively!

They’d made a number of approaches to us this year,

We’ve sat down and done our sums, considered our options and worked out that he might as well go now.

Lucy has a manager and the cows have had months to check his health and then sign him up if we gave him a release.

They weren’t expecting our call and seems to me, they panicked, made minimal enquiries and jumped the gun themselves.

Lucy is a massive investment, spending 45 minutes looking at the books over a $200k-$300k balance of year investment is a tad rushed. No one checked the legals, no one checked his health. Dotted line fever.

I dont think it’s our fault that Lucy’s been duped.

So no personal anti Lucy from me, but I’m prepared to waste him for players who want to stay or fresh meat for the grinder.

I could be wrong, but I think most fans have the same view.

We all would have preferred he committed for longer.

Agree with all of this. He wanted out and this was granted (what is this bullshit about him not wanting to leave or let the fans / his team mates down?) we owe him nothing, same as his brother.

Luc/manager: I/we want a release to go to the Cowboys immediately.”

Tigers: “Ok, sign here, you’re released, thanks for your service, especially that last game.”

Cows: “Wait what? We haven’t done our due diligence as you guys said no last time. Shit we haven’t even done a medical assessment and he’s supposed to be playing an international fixture OMGWTFBBQ!”

None of this is a Tigers problem. If Luc and his manager have managed to arrange this shambles in such a way that he’s now entirely uncontracted that’s on them.
