Listened to Sheens' interview on ABC Grandstand with Moore and Lewis, aside from stating the glaringly obvious that we don't have points in us, he has a worrying amount of blind faith in Marshall being able to take over from him after two years as an assistant coach. The two most recent graduates into NRL that I would consider successful, both Fitzgibbon and Payten, have done extensive apprenticeships leading in to their promotions. Unless Marshall is leaning toward being a man manager Bennettesque type coach and expects to have a roster that requires minimal coaching, he will be an abject failure I believe.
And your point is?
Even a qualified coach like Madge & Cleary were abject failures here. Heck Sheens is the only coach who was able to get any form of success and even he failed more seasons than he was a success. We have gone all in on experienced coaches and failed.
The next 2yrs are going to be critical to how we allow Benji to have a roster that is built to be successful. It's clear we aren't focusing on the short immediate game, we are playing the longer build and sustain game plan.
17yr olds turn 20, 19yr olds turn 22, our current 22yr olds are 25 by the time Benji is coach. If our junior crops are as good as they say - we might get a good 5-8 max players from those kids + maybe a few of the existing group into grade. We will need another 15 odd players in the squad to allow Benji let alone any other coach success here.
Reality is Morris, Flanno, Ciraldo or anyone else will struggle unless they each had good rosters to coach from.
Benji is putting alot on the line with this move, it is something vastly different to anything else we have tried in the last 20yrs - do I think he will be a success - odds are against Benji but in saying that they are against anyone who steps in and coaches the team. Maybe trying something really different may just give us different results.
