Wouldn't mind giving it a burl actually ...do you need calm estuary waters or could you do it from a beach ....I know a spot where I know they have big whiting but you don't get them regularly ...maybe the popper on the top of the tide might be the G OI first tried it with my nephews mate who ran a fishing store. At Sussex Inlet in southern NSW.
I was stoked, we caught elbow snappers that i did not believe existed. We used 1 to 3kg light graphite sticks, with 6 pound braid and fluorocarbon leader. One of the best days ever, but this kid was a guru, he used to cycle from the train with my nephew when they were kids, and catch trout by the bucketfull in warragamba dam. -- illegal though.
It would not work on a wave beach, as it's to turbulent.A little tidal flow is to their liking'.Wouldn't mind giving it a burl actually ...do you need calm estuary waters or could you do it from a beach ....I know a spot where I know they have big whiting but you don't get them regularly ...maybe the popper on the top of the tide might be the G O
Dont forget to lossen your drag when you have finished cleaningFor Da Boss, If you have just started, these are some tips. Graphite rods snap easily, do not high stick them,( check the net for info,) or you will learn quickly. Set your drag at 1/4 of line breaking strain. Tight lines means winding in line as you lower the rod to the water, never lose tension on the line , or you will lose fish. With whiting don't strike if rod tip quivers, they are just mouthing the bait, wait for rod to bend, or better still leave rod in holder and they will hook themselves.
After fishing tighten drags, hose down rod and reel, then wash rod without reel in warm soapy water and rinse. Spray reel and rod guides with inox, avoiding fishing line, and your gear will last a lifetime.
And don't use petroleum based lubricants, only inox, as it won't harm the paint finish or bindings.Dont forget to lossen your drag when you have finished cleaning
Ok thanks for the advice ...the spots sound like they might ok as long as the swell isn't up ....they aren't true surf beaches as such ...they got rough and churned up when it is blowing though ....sounds like similar to doing a slow retrieve with yabbies when they aren't on the bite .....It would not work on a wave beach, as it's to turbulent.A little tidal flow is to their liking'.
The secret is casting the popper from a distance, and retrieve , this creates a blooping motion on the surface, do not stop at any stage ,keep a steady retrieve,or they will lose interest.
If you stagger your retrieve you will probably catch bream if they are about, or tailor. In the shallows it works a treat on flathead, but your lure must be close to the bottom to attract them.
Don't be afraid to rub a bit of minced garlic on it, or even grated parmesan cheese. Don't laugh.A very underrated Bait choice is raw chicken breast. I remember I was fishing down at Batemans Bay once & none of us were catching anything, every cast was coming back empty. Some Asian bloke was cleaning up with a bucket full, went down & had a chat with him & he had a kilo of raw chicken breast from woolies told me works like a charm. You bet the next day went & did the same thing & cleaned up massively. Now in my tough times raw chicken breast is my go to 🤣

You can thank me later.
Skirt steak . .. cut into say 5mm x 5mm thick strips about 8cm long can be dynamite as well. Thread it onto the hook with a bit of tail to waft about.
Is it underrated?Flathead is such an underrated fish for eating.
Do you ever see flathead on a restaurant menu?Is it underrated?
Everyone I know loves it.
Barra is so overrated ...don't get me wrong it's not bad ..not in my Top 10Do you ever see flathead on a restaurant menu?
when I was taught to do it, it was across a shallow (1m) sandy bed with some weed where they can hide from other predators and wait for surface bugs and launch from out of the weeds. We moved around the edges of this area casting across it. The other way is on dusk or dawn under overhanging trees casting at the bank, but you must be able to hear the crickets (you could even see then falling into the water and get taken). This allowed the use of other surface lures than just stick ones. Little cricket or bug looking ones were good but your timing had to be spot on with daylight and cricket noises, etc. this was all river, can’t really help with the beach.Had one small chopper at Hervey Bay ...haven't seen once since the mid 80's and Fraser Island
Only fresh water fishing we really did was chasing big catties or bull sharks way up Ipswich at the mouth of the Bremer and Brisbane river .......yep 40kms inland ...bull sharks .....meat works at Dinmore sure did help ......Ok thanks for the advice ...the spots sound like they might ok as long as the swell isn't up ....they aren't true surf beaches as such ...they got rough and churned up when it is blowing though ....sounds like similar to doing a slow retrieve with yabbies when they aren't on the bite .....
