Referendum 2023

I'm voting yes because I like the idea of a representative body for indigenous people. I see it as quite a small gesture given we've never quite reconciled taking land, brutal policy and terrible policy outcomes and it is natural and fair in my mind that indigenous people have a representative voice. I don't expect it to fix all problems, and expect that the voice will have its own complications, like all government and representative bodies, but I see it as good progress and I'm disappointed that the campaign is going badly.

Enjoyed the discussion. Sorry I haven't gotten
back to those who quoted me. Was busy earlier
and when I got back on, the topic has moved
5 or so pages so I don't want to rehash what has
already been said. Vote with your head & hearts

Believe in you.
I rarely agree with you on football matters but I'm with you 100% on this one and I think you have campaigned admirably.
I can claim Aboriginality, which I don't but if I did, I'd say I was privileged. I scored enough in my HSC to go to university but if I didn't, I could have gone anyway. I went to a good school which my parents paid for but I could have gone to a better one if I wanted, as my brothers kids did. Because they could. I grew up in working class Balmain. My old man worked pretty damn hard and died young. He was a Pom. You're born, you do your best, then you die. Same as everyone else. I made my choices and I'm happy with my outcome so far and if I wasn't, I should only have myself to blame but in my circumstance, I could blame everybody else.
I'm more than happy to carry on as one of 25 million other Australian citizens and just do my best.
Very good. However where we differ - in that that i am a citizen of the human race under no flag.

So all of a sudden we have to represent them? Where were they 200 years ago? They have 11 in parliament already. They are human. It was the white man that excommunicated them. In the beginning. And if you cant read or write English in our multi cultural community the X will be considered a Yes vote.

Cause it will come out of your already empty wallet.

You're not racist for voting no. That's not good that you've been labelled that. I'm sure there are racist people who are voting no, but I get that a conservative perspective on government could easily lead one to vote no. I hope you don't think all of people voting yes have that attitude.
Thanks man, no I don’t…but I’m worried about the reaction that is on it’s way in late October. People are going to be pissed off.
I’m still undecided but leaning towards no.

I talk to a lot of people from different mobs and they are all voting along differing lines. Some want better representation, others want better Governmental benefits whilst the most radical are talking about sovereignty. No one can explain how this works, but most seem in it for themselves and what they will get out of it. It’s confusing.

Thats the goal. Keep the masses confused. We will sought it out later after the vote. Like we did for the Maori people in New Zealand in their referendum.

Lee will take care of you. We be seening green sprouts. We've learnt from our mistakes. Next year will be different. We hear the people.

I will be bitterly disappointed if (when) this fails but I don't like the simplistic takes on people who have opposing political views to me. In fact, I much prefer people willing to engage in political discussion rather than those who take no interest.

I know people frame this referendum as divisive, but I like we're discussing these issues and was nowhere near aware of the strong opposition to the proposal prior to this, so for that I feel I've learnt a lot about the country.

Don't cop nothing from someone holding you accountable for the decision. Us plebs aren't much in this whole thing.

I'm voting yes, too. Thank you for putting my thoughts so well, watersider
