The sin binning and many of the other rulings from last night’s ref were really absolute rubbish, however I agree with Benji in his press conference that the umpiring didn’t matter. We could have had 15 players for the game and still would have gotten hammered.
To say Benji didn’t seem to care is wrong. He was clearly upset and angry, frustrated and hugely disappointed. By not putting blame on the ref, he was ensuring that the focus was not shifted from the appalling lack of effort and attitude of “every” player first and foremost. He alluded to the fact that he has very few options to drop players. I’m sure there was plenty said in the dressing room.
That said, I am not convinced that he and his current staff have any answers or are capable of turning this group of players around. It seems an answer may be to replace Farah and Heighno with some hard nosed experienced assistant coaches to provide more support.
This club requires a complete overhaul of its NRL roster to enable players to play where they should be. It may take a few years, but we must bring in NRL players to the first 30 allowing half our current guys to be in lower grades where they might develop properly. Let juniors develop against their peers and blood them when appropriate. Clean out as much of the dead wood as possible and replace them with ‘effort players,’ competitive types who want to win every minute confrontation.
