Juniors - Pathways General Discussion

The limitation is however that even at the international level you are only talking some 20-30 guys on international salaries. Some good salaries too in Europe and Japan, but then you forego representative fixtures because they won't pick overseas-based players.

So in NZ the top few All Blacks get paid very well, then it falls away quite rapidly because the NZ Comp just doesn't have the financial backing that NRL does; doesn't have the population.
Yep. The only other factor may be some misguided loyalty to Rugby because they have provided education at a prestigious school. Not that the $ values translates exactly but Scotts is what? 40k a year.

Wouldnt be enough to sway me but you could see it being a factor. Especially when they've been told how fortunate they are for 6 years.

Look away Wests Tigers fans, here is the proof rugby union has its eye on the club’s best rising prospect.
This masthead has obtained a photograph of boom rookie Heamasi Makasini meeting with former Wallabies coach Robbie Deans.
Deans, who is the head coach of Japanese rugby side Saitama Wild Knights, was spotted by an eagle eyed restaurantgoer meeting with the highly regarded 16-year-old at the Grace Hotel in Sydney’s CBD last week.
Deans is back in Australia after guiding the Wild Knights to the grand final in late May and was keen to become acquainted with the Newington schoolboy rugby star in the prestigious GPS competition.
A full-time switch to the 15-man game is a genuine option for the talented teenager who is already part of the NSW Waratahs pathways system and was selected in the Australian under-16s side last year.

Cashed-up rugby clubs in Japan have had some success in luring rugby league talent away from the game. Earlier this year, star Roosters centre Joseph Manu agreed to join Toyota Verblitz on a one-year deal in 2025.
Makasini is also drawing plenty of interest from NRL clubs that have made inquiries about his contract status at the Tigers.
But Tigers bosses are currently locked in talks with the local junior before he officially hits the open market on November 1.
Makasini was the crowned as the club’s Harold Matthews (under-17s) player of the year after a barnstorming season from the goalkicking centre, scoring 92 points and finishing as the leading try scorer with 10 tries.
Heamasi Makasini goes whack
Last month, this masthead obtained footage of a rampaging Makasini dominating opponents in a schoolboy rugby clash against The King’s School. His standout performances in the 15-man game, where he routinely monsters opposition players, have already drawn comparisons to All Blacks legend Jonah Lomu.
The Tigers rolled out club powerbrokers NRL coach Benji Marshall and CEO Shane Richardson for a meeting with the teenager’s parents back in March, where the plans for Makasini’s development were put into place.

His parents were also given a tour of the Tigers’ newly built centre of excellence as part of the club’s efforts to retain the youngster.
Despite his tender age, there is a view Makasini is on the cusp of being promoted into NRL program with a debut on the cards within the next 18 months.
The latest development in the race to secure Makasini’s future comes just 24 hours after rising forward Stefano Utoikamanu told the club he would be departing the club at season’s end to join a rival outfit from 2025.
In a blow to the club’s retention efforts, as part of Marshall’s roster rebuild, Utoikamanu rejected a five-year extension worth $4 million to stay at Concord.

Will Craig is apparently off to the Panthers, and Harrison Hassett (edge) has gone back the other way and joined us.

If True, Hassett in my opinion is an upgrade over Clarke. Former Australian Schoolboy and NSW Under 19's. Regular in the Panthers KOE Cup team, but got demoted to Jersey Flegg.

Wests Tigers White Cubs will head to Northern NSW next month as our U/16s boys pathways program takes on the Titans at Piggabeen Sports Complex, Tweed.

A squad of 30 was selected from our Macarthur Wests Tigers Andrew Johns Cup and Balmain Tigers U/16s
Development teams, who played in a trial match against each other at the recent Wests Tigers Challenge event.

This group will train in Sydney for four weeks before being whittled down further, with a 20-player squad to make the trip.

With the White Cubs program focusing on skill development, as well as education, the trip will include a variety of activities including physical training, wellbeing workshops and community visits.

After last year’s match ended in a heart-breaking defeat on the buzzer, this team of local juniors will look to secure victory in 2024.

The team will be coached by Alec Bush, Harrison Fox and Dane Ryan.

If you would like to help support these Wests Tigers juniors on their tour, you can make a donation which will put you in the draw to win a fabulous 2025 Game Day prize.

Haven't seen Hassett play, but I think Clarke will definitely play first grade at some stage. Hasset seems a fair way down the pecking order at Panthers which given he was a standout junior is a concern. If he is small then that might be his downfall against men

I can attend this game , just down the road 👍

Hits a hole (number 11) to make a linebreak and sets up the try at the end of the game (it was the try that helped Panthers get a draw instead of a loss last night).

4 Roosters in that Lot. Lessons here?
We need to keep our 2 and look for more.
I have heard over the weekend that Shannon Gallant has got one up on the Roosters and has signed Levi Conti back to us. Absolutely great news that a local junior that was not treated the right way is back where he should be with us. It will be even better news if Shannon gets Mikey Nasser and Alex Conti back too. It would be a ripper trifecta. Great work Shannon Gallant, LEGEND!

Gee Roosters are onto something aren't they?

Just let the GPS schools do the talent scouting in Western Sydney then come in and pick up the best of the bunch. Zero investment, top talent.

Great business strategy isn't it smh. They have a
loooong history of doing this to kids from out west.
it's a bit of a catch 22 situation because it gives these
talented kids an opportunity they wouldn't otherwise
have but also creates a bit of a monopoly too. Most
GPS schools are located in the East as you know,
once kids get a taste of that glamour life they don't
want to leave, and parents are over the moon to not
be having to pay fees or board (if they're boarders).

Nasser seems like a great talent. He appears to have the size, pace etc that one or two of the "favoured" juniors do not. Thanks for the update.

Go Mighty Mouse!!!
Imagine if big guys like Stef, Paps, and Doobie played with Mighty Mouse’s ticka.
If all our players played with his ticka we’d be first.

1000% great role Shannon Gallant has filled. He actually cares about our juniors and the club something thats been missing in the past. The last three recruitment managers had their agendas with their "mates" that are player agents.
