I think an argument can be made that there was a shift toward success made last season, despite the results.
Plenty of young players brought through- some very good quality potential players. Some better performances than we had seen in previous seasons (SOME- not a blanket 'we were better'). There was a direction in recruitment going in to last season & definitely the end of the season, moreso than in other seasons. Even the debated recruitment of Sezar had a purpose- a senior head with direction & a kicking game.
I think of it like this- 2005 we won the comp. But we started turning things around in 2003, despite the results. We will hopefully see more results in 2025, but some hard yards were churned in 2024.
I'm not aware of the mechanics of it, but whatever lead to Sheens leaving the club instead of taking up that Football GM role he SHOULD have had was a big kick in the nuts of any success we could have had. I'd have loved seeing a Sheens/Richardson front office, guiding Benji & seeding our juniors with young talent (which is what Sheens ALWAYS does well).
Missed opportunity, in my opinion.
