OFFICIAL SG Ball Cup

after watching this game I don’t think either of these sides will be playing finals this year.
Why? HM Magpies won 42-4. Not enough?
SG Ball Magpies read the forums reviews and thought they only had to turn up for the win.
Balmain SG Ball forwards outplayed the more fancied Magpie pack to set up the win!
Taupau-Moors, Kohan Lewis, Godinet, Duncombe were invisible and out played by their counterparts-Zane Farr-Mckay, Matt Aitchison, Will Stone, Blake Van Drie and the bench players.
Full credit also to the coach-Sultana; for his rotation of players to stay on top.
Both sides legless the last 10 minutes so no catchup by the Magpies.

They will get a lot better from next week hopefully. They have missed a bit of cohesion with a several members of the squad training at different grounds and times with Flegg, NSW Cup and NRL pre seasons. Once the combinations get there they will be one of the stronger teams in Ball. The Dogs last year lost their first game and and a couple more after that, then made a run to win the Ball competition. They have a great team, we just need them to click. In my opinion, Karnib and Oitman should be swapping positions next week.
Agreed Karnib dropped two bombs that Balmain scored off soon after.
Makasini is a big unit for 17 and needs to get more involved as he had a quite game. The Magpies side looked physically bigger, however the Balmain side played strong D and scrambled well when the Magpies shifted to the wings where they found some gaps but failed to pass the ball for certain tries.

Good first hit out and entertaining to watch. Galvin hung around and watched a lot of the game with Will Craig cheering on the Wests team which is good for culture.

This has been one of the knocks on Makasini. That he doesn't involve himself enough in games and won't do the hard work. He relies on others to create opportunities for him to capitalise on. So when the game isn't going in his team's favour, like on the weekend, he is non-existent.

I was referring to both sg ball teams. I’ve watched a lot of junior footy and don’t believe wests or Balmain in the u19s have enough quality to finish in the finals. Happy to be proven wrong but I’ll be very surprised if I am. I give wests Harold Matthews team a good chance of having a decent season.

Went missing in that game, and his one shot at goal was hopeless. Took forever to set it up and nearly kicked it out on the opposite sideline.
Don't hold your breath thinking he is our savior in the centres this year.
After his S G Ball effort I don't expect him to play NRL this year unless there is a major turnaround.
Only young, needs time to adjust to the faster pace/skillset of opposing centres .......... IMO

In what I’ve seen of him, he is better suited as a tall, strong, fast and powerful finishing winger.
Obviously he would need to fine tune his yardage carries out of the danger zone, but that can easily be done if he has the right mindset.
Once he does this, a move back to the centres down the track a strong possibility.

Thanks guys for sharing your information and opinions on the opening match. Only a small window to judge on, though disappointing to read Makasini seemed to be outdone by his opponent, as were Wests as a team.

On the flip side, hopefully the performance will act as a leg up for the expected lesser Balmain boys.

Hey guys, this season with the Bar TV coverage of all games & just for shits'n giggles, I'm going to do my own POY points for Magpies & Tigers. It'll be a 7 down to 1 point for players if their team wins & 5 down to 1 if their team loses.

Round 1 - Balmain
7 Marc Tannous
6 Logan Brookes
5 Zane Farr-McKay
4 Xavier Tauaifaiga
3 Jared Haywood
2 Will Stone
1 Jordan Bunt

Round 1 - Wests
5 Riley Oitmann
4 Archie Duncombe
3 Kohan Lewis
2 Tye Bursill
1 Pheonix Godinet

I'm endeavouring to watch each game twice and using some of the great player reviews on here for validation each week as well as some good analysts on Instagram like @theshortball

On 2nd watch of this game, Tigers were the dominant team in general play. Impressed by their line speed in D and fast ruck play and play-the-balls to have them on the front foot which really allowed Tannous, Brookes & De Vries to excel around the ruck.

Amazingly Wests should have levelled the scores with Jack Nicholas going himself when in the clear and had 3-4 support players inside. Logan Brookes did pull off an impressive cover tackle which was a big turning point. But really Balmain won this game in the 10 mins after HT.

Easily could have had other Balmain players in the points as most of their players had really good games. For Wests, Riley Oitmann (despite one dropped ball off a kick) was great. Scored one Papenhuyzen-esque try backing up, saved 2-3 tries with his cover defence, made some strong carries from the wing with his leg speed in the 1st half & was generally safe at fullback in the 2nd including try-savers on Logan Brookes & holding up Joseph Partch in the 2nd.

Archie was strong in the 1st half and was noticeable to difference he made around the middle when he was off. Same with Kohan Lewis. Godinet made a couple of handling errors but produced some strong carries & contact in defence.

I'd give Makasini the benefit of the doubt in this game. He actually made some strong carries out of his end, took a good contested bomb from a drop-out, put his winger away with good hands which should have led to a try and didn't do much wrong in defence. He's probably a victim in this game from non-dominant halves and a forward pack that didn't often get on top to provide space & time for the halves, and credit also to Moughan, Tannous, Haywood who were often up on him in D.

I'll try to do the same for Harold Matts over the coming days. Have watched once but want to watch again.

It was a trial no biggie, give them a bit of time. He's the deadliest finisher on both teams playing above his age group

I've got to say after watching this game last night that it was pretty embarrassing. Both teams were terrible, Balmain the better side though. Both teams had no structure in attack or defence, there were no players on either side who showed any real talent or promise. Just a crap show of hundreds of poor errors really.
The first half was just atrocious. Wests somehow managed to go 30 minutes without passing the ball to their main strike weapon in Makasini. Like seriously, it's not that complicated, get him the ball as early and frequently as you can. He took a few hit ups and should have taken more. For now he's a winger though at any level above Ball.

Wests halves weren't SG Ball standard. Karnib was a mini jack in the box, attack was decent, defence was poor and I think he went off injured.

Balmains 14 really changed the game when he came on, adding a lot of energy and directness which put the Tigers on the front foot. Haywood was solid but quiet. I thought Tannous was the best half on the field, but he was still quite poor. A non existent passing and kicking game, though he did get a couple of repeat sets from deft grubbers. That's the only time I noticed him. Apparently got two try assists but more out of passing the ball to someone who did something to score than by him throwing a great ball to create space.

Balmains backs were all pretty average. Xavier looked lively and willing, not treated in defence though as Wests never spread the ball all game. With his team down by 6 with 10 to go, and 3 unmarked players on his inside who'd all score under the posts, I've no idea how Nicholas chose to go out himself. He'd be running an extra 100 laps at training on Monday if I were his coach. He cost his team any chance of pulling out an unlikely win. You simply have to pass 1000% of the time when you're through with a 4 on 1.

I was wondering if it was Logan Brookes at the back when they listed him under a different name on the nswrl website. His second half was decent.

Wests pack was invisible, none of them showed up which was very disappointing. Balmains starting props made the difference with some strong runs.

All in all a very underwhelming match, and I'd agree that based on this game neither side will come close to finals in Ball. Maybe a massive kick up the bum might wake Wests up

Think some being a bit hard on Makasani, in these lower grades its hard to stand out as a centre/winger if your halves suck, which the magpies ones seem too. Sure he can get the ball, do a hit up, then what? They shift it left and he isnt there? He's not a winger. This is more on the coach and halves then him if he isnt sighted.

There are bigger things on the horizon for him time will prove this.

A bit early to write them off after one game.
