LIVE GAME Preseason Challenge v Canterbury

Live Game Discussion
I remember the days not so long ago when there were many times we could not find a halve willing to be our first receiver and our attack was diabolical because of it.
The first 8 rounds of 2023 spring to mind.
I will take a ball hog first receiver over that crap every day of the week and twice on Sundays.
Were you asleep last year when that type of play resulted in a spoon?

1.2 million a year to sit back and let the 19 year old run the show. Sounds legit
He did win 4 premierships and the recent SOO all playing second fiddle, so he obviously does it well.
Even if Luai is a much more dominant playmaker with us, I still think it will be shared fairly equally.

Were you asleep when every MRL analyst were in raptures about what Galvin done in such a sub-standard team ?
Either way having Luai playing alongside him will be of great benefit, I just can’t see Galvin taking such a back seat like many of our fans are anticipating.

If Galvin is the main focus of our attack be prepared for another spoon and Luai and Fainu to leave.
It’s just so stupid I can’t believe you are saying it out loud.

Last year he took a very dominant role in that Penrith side as Cleary was out for about half the season. From memory they didn’t play any worse when he was main man. Pretty sure they beat sharks like 42-0 with Luai as main man in one game and they were the 4th best team last year.

He’s stepped up a lot in the last year in all aspects particularly his maturity. He was in David Middleton’s Top 5 NRL players of the year last year and rightfully so. He also literally carried and captained a below average Samoa against England and broke the State of Origin decider open with his line break.

Given his personality and attitude to compete and all his performances in the last year I would be very VERY surprised if he didn’t assert himself as the primary playmaker.

Caught some of the game. Once Galvin and Mason went off it was grim viewing. No wonder we are getting smashed in lower grades if that was the standard those teams are playing at.

We havent paid $1.2m per year for a support act
No but for the past 100 years the halve with the better more dangerous running game has generally been the 2nd receiver to allow more time and space to play.
Sure Luai can play as a 1st receiver, but taking away his time and space to play which would also reduce his opportunities to run the ball is essentially taking him away from his strengths isn’t it ?
The better and smarter option would be for them to have an equal 50/50 split, both playing both sides of the field as often as possible which would keep their opponents guessing and allow Luai opportunities to run at players wide of the ruck which he does so well and was the play that virtually won NSW the SOO series in 2024.

Galvin is a kid. His claim to fame is 21 NRL games with a win record of 24% and a spoon.
He will do what he is told, when he is told by his halves partner who has actually achieved in this game.

Nobody is suggesting otherwise.
What I am merely speculating is I don’t think Luai or Benji will want or expect Galvin to take a backseat, when he plays the dominant playmaker role so well.
I did say earlier that Galvin may be the more dominant playmaker, but I will rephrase that and say I expect it will be virtually a 50/50 split with Luai and Benji’s blessing and for what will work best for the team.
Not long to wait now, time will tell.

Obviously not saying he can play to that standard just yet, but similar in way of his high energy on the ball style of play.
We will all see how it works out very soon, but I get the impression Luai is happy to let someone else be the more dominant playmaker.
He came here to challenge himself what I took from that was that he wanted to be the dominant playmaker.

He doesn’t play it well. We let him do it last year and came last.
We let him do it in Sundays trial and couldn’t score despite great field position and possession.
He is not a dominant playmaker and won’t be for years and years.

If that happens, Benji better get his Seek profile up to date.

Last year when Luai ran the show at the Panthers he handled it fine. He has been made captain & is our highest earner - he isn’t here to play a supporting act.

Galvin playing on the right will be new dynamic for him also.

Either way it’s going to take a while for the spine to click & strike the balance I feel, without strike centers and down a backrower will make things abit harder for them both as well.

I’d be fairly confident in saying Benji will allow Luai to play whatever style of game he likes and if that means being the dominant 1st receiver then that will happen.
Again it’s purely guessing on my behalf, but I think Luai is smart enough to realise one of his main strengths is running at players wide of the ruck and if he chooses to take on a more hands on the ball controlling style of play, that will reduce his opportunities to run at players wide of the ruck.
As others have pointed out he has shown he can play both roles and so has Galvin, so I’m guessing they will share the main playmaker role so neither of them are restricted.
I could be totally wrong, we will find out soon.

Lacking strike on our edges (back row and centres) is my biggest concern.
I have the utmost confidence that Luai and Galvin are so classy that they will click and gel as a duo within no time, but as you have pointed out lacking strike on our edges could be our downfall.
I’m hopeful there will be some surprise packages that can alleviate these concerns.
