Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

How stiff was the competition in the team that ran last? He's no Hudson Young. He wouldn't even get a run off the bench at Canberra..

Whilst we do know what he is capable of in the backrow.. Do we know what he is capable in the middle? Could he be better?

He is 21 and has only played about 30 games and no where near his ceiling yet ,.,

He is the best edge at the club already and will only improve

Hudson Young is 27

Benji created this roster.
I don’t know why some of you choose to ignore this fact.
Unfortunately benji wants to fill our forward pack with Polynesians, mostly big bodies, apart from the rare exception are soft we need more hard nutcase country boys, Canberra have Hudson young, Horsbourgh Penrith have yeo Martin, Sorenson, chooks have Radley, Lindsay, Collins, Angus C the closest we have to that is seyfart

100% Sukkar should be moved to the middle. He is strong in contact, is very consistent, decent at the wrestle, is a far stronger carry than people give him credit for, and is still very young.

I think he can go the Sam McIntyre mould, develop into a strong, consistent, reliable middle by his mid 20s and offer value in the squad, much like Sam has at the Cowboys.

But he'll need to do 2/3 seasons of it in Cup first. He's also bigger than his stats suggest, so I'd say at some point this year he's grown, which is not surprising considering he turned 21 in May.
We need big mobile forwards , for way too long we think Twal , Seyfarth & Bird type players fit the bill , look at Parra now and their pack with no RCG , Matterson , Lane ,Cartwright are going well , time to move on some of our weakling pack

the problem is we don’t have anyone to replace them in cup

What's everyone reckon. Sign Dane Gagai & Jayden Campbell & re-sign Doueihi.

That would be 28 out of 30. Sullivan goes then back to 27.

Mapapalangi gets the last development spot.

Need 3 middles to upgrade on Seyfarth & a genuine Lock.

Bula, Turuva, Gagai*, TayMay, Makasini

Luai, Campbell*

TeMay, Api, Seyfarth, KPP, SaFainu, LaFainu

Doueihi*, Pole, Twal, SiFainu

NSW Cup

Mason, L Lualili, Toa, Bird, Skelton

Mapapalangi*, Madden

Hunt, Hope, K Lualili, Sukkar, Saukuru, Murray

Haywood, Goodinet, Broderlow, Taupua-Moors

Not including any of the current NSW Cup squad, there are 2 or 3 definitely worth keeping.

How a decent run club administer their contracts and development.

He'd be top 30 as an 18 year old, and given the keys to the club straight out of SG Ball if he was at Wests Tigers.
This is the sub system we need to develop as our pathways programme. We need another sub system for coaching. When those are in place the foundations are set and you can build. At the moment we are trying to build on clay.

Agree with the first part, not with the second.

Parra's pack is average. Super average. They are playing closer to their ability though, some of ours; not so much.

I think it's safe to say that Ryles is getting more out of the forwards he has than Benji is.

Lucky Warren McDonnell and Sheens are long gone around here then.

They did more damage to our cap and squad than they get credit for.

he’s 21. comparing him to SOO back rowers isn’t even fair
He's no comparing his play style, he is comparing his physical attributes. His speed and agility isn't going to suddenly improve with experience. He may learn to better use what he is equipped with but the assets will remain the same. I think he can do a job on an edge but I also believe he is better suited to the middle.
For all the praise of how well he performed last year (and he did perform well for such a young forward, in his first full year, in a terribly performed team) he was still average at best. He led the comp for try causes and averaged less than 100m a game. He has gone backwards this year (no doubt due to opposition having done more study on him) despite supposedly having an elite half inside him.
If kept in the backrow I've no doubt he will further develop into a quality player. I just think he has far more upside as a middle. He'd hardly be the first front rower who got his start on an edge, Papallii, Tapine, JFH, Kaloamatangi, Taumalolo...the list goes on.

He's been busted every year of his career. He's just not up for it.
Busted To'a is still better than 35 year old Dane Gagai.

Unless we have a better option at right centre, we should be keeping him.

It's popular to bag him at the moment, he leads our try assists and is second to Turuva in tries (most of Turuva's tries assisted by To'a).

We are a club who struggles to attract good players and when we do get 1 or 2, usually we break even because we lose a couple.

I'd be keeping Api, Luai, May x 2, Fainu x 3, To'a, Turuva, Makasini, Bula from this lot. The rest can go.

I expect that McDonnell and Sheens were playing a game of sign as many as you can as cheap as you can and hope a couple come good. I expect this was because there was nothing to aspire to and this was a method to try to stabilse the sinking ship. Despite the outcome of Sheens' second coming, I have no doubt that he had good intentions and thought that the approach was the right one.

It would be brilliant if we could be in a simialr position as the Warriors are with Clearly 2.0. Unfortunately, we are missing a key ingredient. I think Benji and Richo are trying to build it - but until we have something to aspire to it is very hard to have players lined up willing to bide their time in Ressies to develop. Without the desire to play for "this club" they won't wait. TDS apparently loved the club - but him not willing to wait and continue his development is an example of the problem (it may also be an indictment of the current generation too).

Sustained success is what we need. To be considered a top 4 club is a great strategic goal but cycling through permiership winning windows while remaining in the top 8 is what is required.

my point is we have a young squad and most of the comparisons are short sighted. hudson young is in career best form. at 21 he was eye gouging blokes.
