Our recruitment of senior players to supplement the club until the juniors who look strong are ready has been horrible. The GM of Football has been sacked and the coach is on thin ice with new assistants being hired.
I think one thing is clear that they are taking action. Sheens major strength is getting out pathways in order however, his connections around the league will pay dividends with player signings. Paying overs for shorter term deals for experience is probably a necessity at the moment.
I just hopw Sheens remembers what he did signing Adam Blair, he ripped the heart and soul out of the team for zero return.
Yep terrible decision. Blair at the time was a beast. Proved to be a major blunder. I don’t think it was the only reason.
Fifita was a lot of drama behind the scenes from memory . And from memory Gibbs lead the boys club , and many were calling for his head because he had had a few lean years . Lote was 35 , and benji and Beau had major issues because of the footy show .
All in all , the first team was a hot bed of personalities , media darlings and egotistical juniors coming through .
Sheens made some bad choices in Blair and that front rower who played a couple of games got smashed, because he wasn’t ready , and never got over it .
It happens , we just never had the infrastructure to absorb those misses . Mainly because our management lacked vision , and ability , and were more concerned with wearing blazers, and fighting over who gets first billing out of Balmain and Wests , than actually doing thier job .
Sheens knows how to navigate the politics here . Ad has always had elite juniors in his clubs wherever he has gone .
That’s not an accident .
He has also been terrible at managing the salary cap
Yea true . I’m not saying he’s some messiah , just he has always focused on juniors and developing them . Hopefully with all the back room improvement , we can put someone with an analytical brain to better do that .
I was hoping Hartigan would be that balance which is what has raised my concern over the increasing role of Sheens.
I understand what you are saying with this, and I have say I agree with you.....but.....
It seems to me that other than Melbourne (and potentially Roosters) all clubs have to roll the dice with salary cap. I'd put it to you that Cleary screwed our cap harder than Sheens did. Penrith just won the comp and if the media is to be believed, they are already needing to push players out.
Our salary cap is nice and neatly sorted right now. Nice and neat and safe and tidy and we dont look like threatening success on the field at all. Fortune favours the bold and all that.
I think (calculated) risks need to be taken. I am very nervous about McDonnell being brought back but heartened that the club seems to be making changes.
Sheens messed it as bad as Cleary, just have to trust he doesn't again.
This time Sheens isn't coach - you'd think that would get him a different perspective as administrator.
