Disagree completely. There are only 2 reasons to support a team, 1 your dad did, or you grew up in the area. Anything else is fake.
Well…I kinda agree but there are exceptions. I am one.
I loved watching soccer as a kid (on SBS highlight shows) but never had a club I supported. I knew nothing of the histories, just really enjoyed watching.
Being a mad Beatles fan, I went to Liverpool on pilgrimage a number of times, so it seemed logical to support the local team as it was the only English city I had an affinity with. They weren’t a top team at the time and if they were I reckon I would have had a problem supporting them; I love an underdog and bandwagon support doesn’t get much respect from me. I see that as fickle and unless they become a die-hard (rare), they usually only show up (and gloat) when the team wins a premiership.
Anyway, I had never seen Liverpool play live at that stage, but when I was in England (nearly 30 years ago now) I managed to get tickets to Old Trafford to watch the great Man United. Incredible atmosphere but I felt nothing, no connection.
I knew then that it was Liverpool and no other and have been madly in love with the Reds ever since. (Ironic that going to Old Trafford cemented my love for Liverpool).
In terms of rugby league, my family have been Tigers fans for 70+ years and I was born into it…. (tragically 😆).
So, I have both been born into team fandom and chosen it.
Btw, that’s why for me 2005 will therefore always be the most special year.
I said that in my wedding speech…
in 2008. 🤣
