Only 1 person was pushing buying Lichaa and i think they must be a relo or friend of his.

And we enter the season with no established hooker and a bunch of untested makeshift 9s.... Great.

You are still pushing his barrow but he is no better than what we have

I don't agree that AJ and Gagai are an upgrade on what we have. I would say they are quicker and flashier, but the only player I would drop for them is Jennings based on prior form.

We need some backs though. They would both make our top team. AJ probably to fullback and Gagai to the centres.

We'd have a much better squad.

Gagai is a terrible centre, he can’t defend. He would be a downgrade there, although an upgrade on the wing. Both of them would cost a fair bit and both would occupy first grade spots for the duration of their contracts and block youngsters coming through. They might improve our chances of coming 8th vs 9th but they would not make us real contenders. Chasing 8th just because we haven’t been there for a long time will just distract us from building towards actually contending.
We’re not going to be contenders next year but we have a good young forward pack to build with and our centre pairing (Mbye and Momirovski) have scope to improve. If they don’t then we have Talau who is a decent chance of going well. Spend the money on genuine strike players or on the next generation coming through, not on average to above average established players...

Nelson, a very good post mate! I’m excited about the young players knocking on the door now. I’m predicting top 4 in 2022.

The problem is what genuine strike players are we going to get. I agree that we shouldn't blow our load on these guys but we need more backs and these guys should walk into our top team. We just need to have contracts that are in our favor. If they aren't don't buy these guys.

Gagai versus Momo and Talau isn't really a competition at this stage of their careers. I liked the look of Mbye in the centres but I doubt he is any cheaper than those guys and maybe he will play in the spine next year.

We pinned our hopes on juniors 5 years ago in Brooks Moses Tedesco and Sironen and Simona. When you put juniors into a struggling team their progress is stunted. We have Cap space now, we need to buy quality so when this new batch of kids comes
through, they're joining a solid side. Or well lose them like we did the last bunch.

Its why all young Storm and Roosters debutants look so good. I guarantee that Papenhuyzen wouldn't have shone so quickly if he stayed a Tiger. Munster Smith and co take all the pressure

I think if we really squeezed souffs we would get the pair for between 700 and 800k. Gagai has 2 years to run on his contract at the rabbits so a 2 year deal with them subsidising both years then cut him as he will be 31 and the younger brigade should be NRL ready. Johnston only has 1 year to run on his contract so we wouldn't want to offer too much if we keep him on for 2 plus years. He is 24 and has pace and an ability to score tries. Even if the addition of these 2 only pushed us in to the 8 it is a step in the right direction. We need to start showing that we are heading in the right direction instead of kicking stones because we missed the big catch. Gradual improvement and 2 top 8 finishes over the next 2 years coupled with the COE would give this club a new lease of life.

100% agree. Talau would only benefit from playing alongside Gagai.

He would if he played for QLD along side of him.

If he played alongside him in club football - Talau would be able to teach him imo.

I feel like making them keep the Gagai and AJ contracts puts more pressure on them to keep their young talent like Douhie. Someone's not gonna be happy playing CC and I don't think Souths will love paying Gagai and AJ to play there.

We got rid of Matterson before November 1st so he didn’t count in the 2020 cap.

He wouldn’t get paid half he would still get the original money he signed for but we would pay some and what ever we don’t pay south’s pay the rest

At what level does it become viable for Souths?
