Alex Twal #206

He's always had an offload, it's just been put away for some reason. Even Mikaele has cut back on offloads, but seems to be releasing them again now.

If he's been working on his ballplaying skills then that's great and lets see where he at.

Other options in the squad include Joffa, Tuki and Tamou. Blore and Stefano may get there one day but don't currently have the engine for lock in first grade. At least not 80 mins.

Tuki could make an excellent lock next season.

At the start of last season prior to his injury, Twal produced an excellent step to beat a defender and got into space. I recall him doing this a few times, after his injury he did not try to step - not sure why! Like all good players he is still developing his game and could do well at 13 with a good injury free season

I guess the Tuki offload to Simpkin, without an "s", that led to his try in the Manly trial, was just a throwback to his Rugby days when you HAVE to release the ball when tackled? :+1:

Last year there was no one following through for offloads as well so it shouldn't be a shock to realise most of our forwards were not offloading hopefully this year with some speed in the backs we will see some second phase play

From what it sounds like, Twal's role in defence will be a lot different to last year. In years gone by, lock cleans up the ruck, makes and helps avoid the half- breaks.

This year the hooker and lock will work very close together with back-to- back efforts. Every tackler will have to work very hard to get to marker. It will be a failure for Twal whenever he isn't able to get to marker (same with Liddle). Don't think we will see many big tackles this year.

What’s the difference between a lock and prop anyway?

Our Lock should be able to pass the ball / offload and Twal is a solid prop not someone who can link and offload with the backline off the base of the scrum.

That said we have not shifted the ball to the backs on attack since the Manly trial

He’d have to have the longest try scoring drought

I wonder how many nudie runs he’s done from Sydney harbour to Manly?

He makes good meters just lacks impact, seems to be turning out like Eisinhuth hopefully he can continue to develop and bend the line more with his runs.

lock should ball play these days don't think that is twals go

It depends if you want to give your halves more space OR if you need more defence in the middle. There are different types of lock that fill different gaps in the team.

I think the game has moved away from the third prop type of lock.

100%. Todd Payten had Taumalolo doing heaps of ball-work in the off season.

Hopefully the experiment with Twal at lock is now over and we are looking elsewhere. My view is possibly Offa but more likely I'd give Liddle a run at 14 and bring him on in either role as the game requires.
