Andrew Fifita on track for State of Origin in 2013, says coach Shane Flanagan

ANDREW Fifita is on the verge of fulfilling his State of Origin potential as club coach Shane Flanagan tipped him for a starting spot at Cronulla in 2013.

The ever-confident Fifita, who was last year named in the emerging Blues squad used to identify future Origin players, has a long-held desire to break into the game's toughest arena.

And after Fifita's second pre-season at the Sharks, Flanagan is predicting big things from the 120kg powerhouse.

"He's had a year with us now and he's just looking a picture," Flanagan said.

"He's gone from being that No.14-17 player to being a guy who is going to start a lot of the time.

"He's really developed into a good young front rower now. Everyone evolves and he's definitely come along in leaps and bounds."

Whether that translates into a call-up to Laurie Daley's squad for this year's State of Origin series is another matter, but the front row has been a problem area for the Blues during Queensland's record-breaking seven-year dominance.

NSW have called upon 12 front-rowers in the past three series compared to just six from Queensland, who have been boosted by reliable Australian trio Petero Civoniceva, Matt Scott and Ben Hannant.

In contrast the most successful Blues option has been Sharks and NSW skipper Paul Gallen who moved from lock to prop to great effect.

Flanagan said Fifita had the attitude and ability to wreak havoc at any level.

"He's definitely a confident kid. He backs his own ability and the challenges we put in front of him," Flanagan said.

"He's 120 kilos and he's very, very mobile for a big bloke.

"He's got some work to do because Origin is another step, but he's heading in the right direction.

"If he nails down a starting spot for us that's definitely another move in the right direction.

"If he gets that down pat then who knows? He could be talked about in rep footy times."

Flanagan said Fifita had been guilty of trying to do too much at times last year, but has matured under the leadership of Gallen and former Maroons prop Ben Ross.

"(He has improved in) just general maturity to the game and understanding what his role is within the team," Flanagan said.

"(Last year) he was probably trying to do too much at different stages and wasn't focused on what he had to do for the team.

"He's an explosive type of player, he's got some good skill and he's a big man.

"It's just taken a little bit of time for him to understand where he fits and what the game is about.

"But the penny is starting to drop there for him."

Haha his no chance there are heaps in front of him.

I wouldn't be too quick to write him off given a ball hasn't been kicked this season yet.

Lets just hope he has matured a bit, the constant whinging in the press about Tigers got to the point where even Flanagan had to step in and tell him to give it a rest and concentrate on his footy.

Fifita another forward who has grown a leg after leaving the Tutelage of Sheens - who was a forward himself, so you'd think he should know how to coach them!

The way i mean it is there is way better fowards in the nrl that still didnt make it for nsw last year and one of them is currently with us and thats Aaron Woods. So there are heaps of fowards who should be play for nsw before him from all the other 16 clubs.

So the actual story here is that Fifita might get a starting spot in some games for the sharks rather than a bench spot.

Why not… NSW are obsessed with forwards going sideways

Thats only because they are driven sideways by our wrecking ball defensive line Watto

I would think at least 5-6 blokes would come before him at this stage

But as Qlder if you blokes want to pick him go right ahead I'm sure Myles ,Hannant,Scott and Shillington will have some fun

I hope he goes really well but I don't know about SOO this year. Give him a year or so and those bloody QLDer's will wanna watch out.

Based on last year's form he'd be long odds but who knows when it comes to NSW selections. He'd have to improve to the point where his actions match his ego though.

We won't need to watch out until you replace the genius coach Kaz

Probably find that Daley will turn around quickly and his Snoz will knock out Gallen just before SOO Game 1

I'm surprised QLD hasn't tried to claim him? Surely he took a holiday on the Gold Coast once as a kid?

The QRL couldn't afford the Buffet Bill now the ARLC have taken away a big chunk of its revenue…

I'm with tigers rule here so I'll have a crack

grant
tamou
woods
merrin
Galloway
weyman
Douglas
Brett white
king (not imo but the selectors )
tolman

that ignores the likes of Gallen and creagh who were used there last year

If Snowden can recapture form he is another in the mix, I also see Fifita as an impact forward so he will compete against the likes of Tariq Sims rather then classic prop types of Woods/Grant etc.
