Australia Day...

Unfortunately working.

Will be making up for it in the afternoon , beach, B.B.Q, friends and families. What more can you ask for.

Happy Australia Day everyone, enjoy your Day and spare a thought just how lucky we are to live in the best Country in the World.

I saw a bumper sticker on car last week.

Australia, like it or leave.

simple and straight to the point.

yeah it sends a message alright. That the owner is an a grade half wit.

Don't see a problem with that sticker and what it says. Its fair enough IMO, if someone doesn't like our great country andall it stands for then move to somewhere that is more to their liking for whatever reason. Its not racist by any means.

Unfortunately, the implication is that if you don't like any aspect of our country, that you're not welcome. I love my country, but anybody who thinks it is perfect is a fool. I choose to try to make it better rather than leaving.

What we have done to our country environmental wise in 200 years is pretty amazing - in the wrong direction. Strictly speaking we don't care a poop what we do to the Great Barrier Reef - our greatest wonder. We vote in governments that allow enormous harm to it. It is not only Australia in this manner but I think Germany has a lot better attitude. Not mentioning the war of course. We don't really care for this country - the Aborigines did and still do more so.

Well some peeps get it and some dont.

If u cant see the inherent racist tone of it then well i guess you dont get it.

I put it in he same barrel as the "phwuck off were full' ones and the 'we speak English 'ones as well…..extremely nasty messages from a supposed fair and open society that are basically sayin eat meat pies and drink beer or we dont want you.

Another point......i dont see why we are so 'great'....ive been to plenty of places that are more fair, fun and have a sense of joy about them that we have lost.

We arent that special really.....should i leave??

I see that message as condescending or patronising rather than racist…Masterton said it well.
Its not something Id put on my car, though I have an Aussie flag hanging in my garage/gym....along with a WTs one too

I think I 'celebrate Aus day every day, just by being grateful I was lucky enough to be born here, my dad always told me "Youre lucky you were born in the best country on earth"
Every time I watch the news and see the crap elsewhere on the planet...I think of his words

I think the message is aimed at those extreme people from other countries who arrive and want to totally change our country from our way to their way. Those that are grateful and thankful to be here - the message isnt towards them

Nah, it's just straight up racist. It's basically saying assimilate or GTFO. What you came here as a refugee to escape persecution or execution? Then you should be happy to embrace our culture and if you're not then you can go back to your life of persecution!

If you love it good on you. If you want to show you love it, good on you. Why do you need to demand that everyone else should love it?

I would think the people who chose to come to this country to escape poverty or persecution would be the first to help celebrate our national day - and I think, in the most part, they do.
In general the people lucky enough to be born and raised here seem to take our liberties and way of life for granted.
The bumper stickers about 'love our country or leave it' are aimed at those that want to impose their values and customs at the expense, and not in conjunction with, our own.

What are our values?

And whom may I ask are the hordes coming to loosen our grasp on these values and IMPOSE their own upon us??

Sounds like rooobish to me!!

Its up to the individuals perception as to what it means.
Ive explained what it means to me, youve explained your interpretation.
Ive met westTahger, Im sure his interpretation isnt hateful or racist either.
I agree with your last sentence, though as I explained I believe its not directed at those in that sentence

Surf Patrol in the morning, BBQ with friends in the arvo. Good times

Being my goal for years to get fit enough and everything else to reach surf control but sometimes swimming in reverse

Just got back from the beach now. We had to close the beach again today, as well as yesterday. The surf was big and rips going everywhere. My nose is still leaking salt water. Got held under a bit today. I went out with three other life savers and we all got absolutely nailed a few times each by big sets. Great fun out there today at high tide.
If you want to see some real carnage today. Head to Manly, there is a surf carnival on and they are racing the Surf Board. From where I was at the North end I could see broken oars and unturned boats everywhere. Hope they are filming this surf carnival. Those guys and girls are mad that take boats out in big surfs. Even when they make the drop and get out the front of the wave, the wave will eventually catch them again on the reform , then smash them. Makes great viewing. I think only Aussies behave in this sort of way. I can't think of any other Nations that take out large wooden boats , with a five person crew and try and surf six foot waves in them.

Lol.. Us Aussies are completely mad, didn't you know

What I would hope that happens on Australia Day is that our beautiful multicultural community celebrates the day how they would like under the one flag,in peace, love and happiness….God bless each and everyone..

Well said True Tiger. Most of us came here in search of a better life and not to bring our problems with us. Happy Australia to all members

It was just a **sticker I saw.**

No other intentions or racial over tones meant by it.
No where did I say I condoned it, or agreed with it.

like australia 1777? not having a go, just found it ironic.

idk where the middle ground is. to me, australia is a very accepting society. i've never come across people at work, uni or everyday life that say stuff like "like it or leave it" "speak english" etc. it comes back to the fact that there are idiots in every society

I'm camping at the moment.
It's a snapshot of Aussie life.
I have a large Indian family to my right and an even bigger Chinese family to my left.
Across from us we have some young Kiwi fellas and behind us some dinky-dI bogans.
We have been playing cricket with the bogans, and Indians and their families.
We have shared a barbie with the Kiwis and had some beers.
We have been surf fishing with the Chinese dad and his eldest girl.
All have gotten along, all helped each other setup camp areas etc…
Look forward to having a great Australian day tomorrow with them.
We are all the same. We are Aussies.

I love Australia Day for being the day to reflect about the wonderful lifestyle we have… We will have a few beers, a feed, a surf and watch some cricket.

I'm also open to debate the date and why we could move it to lesson the burden/history on our Aboriginal Brothers/Sisters... I think it's a discussion we need to have.

Total agree Watto. I saw an Aboriginal man were a t-shirt the other day saying "Australia, drive it like you stole it". I had a good chat this him, nicest guy. I love Australia Day. However the date of Jan 26th does put a downer on it for me. The 26th marks the anniversary of the 1788 arrival of the First Fleet of British Ships at Port Jackson, New South Wales, and the raising of the Flag of Great Britain at Sydney Cove by Governor Arthur Phillip. Most people I know want to celebrate being Australian and Australian Culture, not the day the English arrived here.
Even though my ancestors were on the 2nd fleet, I could enjoy the party more If Australia Day was on another date.

^^^ as per above ^^^

Australa day to me brings back memories of the Bicentenial celebrations, which was one hell of a day on the harbour that ended the following in the officers bar with senior personnel aboard the British aircraft carrier.

Not long after that during conversation I got the perspective of that day from Aboriginal Australians and have not celebrated the day since.
