Australian of the Year - Dylan Alcott

I'm not a fan of tennis and have no particular link to people with disabilities or people in wheelchairs, but this guy is the best choice in many years, and he is 'The man'!

He doesn't care about ability level, he doesn't care about culture or colour of your skin, and unlike the last opportunist flog, he isn't playing politics.

He is 100% Aussie, he loves everyone and he loves our country, warts and all. For me, I almost tear up the way he talks about Australia. - Congratulations Dylan!

As someone who works with people with disabilities this is a great choice and should make a positive difference. He has a great attitude and a positive connection with all Australians. He is also someone that young people know and respect from his work on Triple J and his sporting achievements meaning he can have a massive difference for the future by using his voice.

As he said now let’s fix the NDIS

What he has done is amazing.
Wheelchair tennis on prime time TV live is really inspiring for those in a similar situation.
The way he always holds his opponents as well is great.

Best sporting choice for a long time

Now he has to fly back to Melbourne and win the aussie open tomorrow in his retirement game as well.

He is another great choice and like your last line emphasised, perception is everything. A major political statement on the national stage to begin his tenure.

Good start by immediately following the lead of his predecessor in highlighting the need to urgently address an issue that is widespread across the community. Maybe it will draw she of the "lying cow" statement out of hiding to fix a problem instead of dry cleaning it off a couch in her office.

Tame was a sensational pick last year. Don't know much about this Alcott guy. Think he did some tv commercials during the tennis but if he's a vocal and outspoken disability support champion then it's a welcome and deserved recognition

Not sure of who he'd be up against...

But seeing the photo below, this guy is worthy.

All about paying it forward.

Dylan Alcott is a credit to our country with how he holds himself both on and off his sporting arena. Plays his chosen sport in the true definition of sportsmanship and is always respectful of his opponents. A fantastic choice and ensures that he will continue to greatly inspire athletes with disability especially and help raise awareness towards giving people the dignity they deserve to be treated with.
Outstanding choice as our Australian Of The Year, the bloke is a champion in every way.

Tame was a sensational pick last year, which makes it an even bigger shame that the opportunity was wasted on superficiality and cheap political stunts. She is a genuine hero for the stance she took originally and the AotY gong was a priceless opportunity to shine the light on the problems of sexual assault and violence and instead she will be remembered for hating Scomo.

Dylan Alcott is also a sensational pick and I hope he can maintain a focus on the good he can do in his area.

I reckon Alcott is fantastic. I also think Tame has been fantastic and I love that she was surly towards Morrison. I'm not even having a go at Morrison either. Tame had her reasons which are good reasons for being surly towards Scotty.

Just to clarify my earlier posts. I have zero problem with Tame being surly to Scotty, wouldnt matter if she hates his guts, many do. For me the point is it has detracted from the message that she could and should have been spreading. She is being praised for standing up to Scotty. Is that why she was made AotY? Was that her platform?

carrying on the way she did she should have simply not gone.
Nice she got photos with Hanson Young and Albo though to be clear where she stands with her politics.
She will also happily be a guest at the national press club in February with Higgins

I think she performed poorly all year as AotY, purely because she let her politics and dislike for Scomo distract from her message or what her message should have been. I think her behaviour in her last day as AotY was terrible. The AotY should not be so partisan.

I regret raising Grace Tame in this thread, not because of animosity to her but lets not distract from the excellent selection of Dylan Alcott.

Yes, as part of her ongoing work into supporting survivors of abuse.

She does a good sooky lala face

Alcott is a character, I enjoyed him saying how Sauvage and the other fella (forget his name) were inspirational for him
