Balmain & Wests - Stone cold Broke ?

What if Wests Ashfield no longer want to put that money into the Wests Magpies sides ?

Last I heard Wests Ashfield supply most of the funds required by the Magpies, if this stops then the ramifications could be dire unless a benefactor comes along which is doubtful. It shows how important it is for those who want to see the Magpies survive to join the Wests Ashfield Leagues Club to push for continued funding at the AGM.

but how can wests not have the money. we always hear about how much profit wests ashfield makes

In essence, both Western Suburbs and Balmain Football Clubs are broke without leagues club assistance. Neither football club generates sufficient revenue to cover their expenses as both football clubs and partners in the JV.

Ashfield and Campbelltown are profitable, but that does not necessarily mean they will provide funding to Western Suburbs Magpies.

Wests Ashfield can choose to donate to whoever they please. It does appear that they are now drifting towards solely supporting Wests Tigers. Maybe they feel they get a better bang for their buck by investing into the JV rather than Western Suburbs (probably the right call). In the end, Wests Ashfield and Wests Campbelltown have the capacity to donate to either the JV or Western Suburbs. Perhaps the only question they have is should they support both? Why not one large donation to Wests Tigers and the JV runs the junior rep teams in Campbelltown?

There are two issues in the background that are causing uncertainty:

1\. **The role of Balmain Leagues Club given the debacle that is Victoria Road.** Going by the annual report, I cannot see how the current scenario is sustainable.

2\. **The new TV deal and the impact on the JV (ie: will the JV require leagues club funding?)**. If revenues are sufficiently high enough from the new TV deal and costs (wages) only rise marginally, it will certainly take the pressure of all the leagues clubs, in particular Balmain Leagues. The player and coaching market will determine if the Leagues clubs will be required.

Rumour or fact, the future of wests and balmain being stand alone as they are is not bright. Financially for all parties its better to consolidate via WT and manage the balmain and wests junior leagues via a unified approach (perhaps have an office at liverpool or campbelltown in addition to concord). As i have stated i think the only way to satisfy diehards is to unify the nsw cup side and play in alternate 'balmain' strip and 'magpies' strip and sharing matches between campbelltown and leichhardt (and aligning games with NRL games when possible to give some exposure to the nsw cup side). That way we have better value for money (less duplication and administration) and still have a link to our 200 years of history.

People.

The information in my opening post needs to be adjusted. All of Wests debts to Blades have been paid and the relationship between Wests and Blades was very good. Carney's did Wests a better deal.

I knew Balmain would be the real broke ones

The story around the traps at the Bulldogs junior grand finals today was Balmain and Wests WILL merge their junior rep sides and play under the Weststigers banner,if so i dont have a problem with it .Half the costs double the juniors.

double the juniors???

Things never stay the same we have to move with the times …from the magpie side of things it's a shame that the Magpies might not be around but on the upside if everything is merged I will have a full club (organisation) to follow. My 3 young grand children like me when I was there age hopefully as I did with the Magpies will follow the Weststigers organisation because this is the future.

Only way to go, just one brand name from juniors through to NRL. One team and the Weststigers brand name will get bigger and bigger. Shame to see two great clubs go but its the way it has to be. The money needed to run these two great club is not their anymore

Its already begun

Obviously money has a lot to do with the outcome here. If money dictates that the NSW Cup teams have to amalgamate as a Wests Tigers State Cup team then fate has been decided by financial resources. IMO it is a shame if the junior rep teams have to combine. Keeping them separate (Wests and Balmain) gives more kids an opportunity to play rep football. It also caters for the vast geographical nature of our juniors spread from one end of sydney to the other. It would also give Balmain and Wests an opportunity to maintain a representative presence and some recognition of the existence of two original great clubs.

Has there been confirmation of the fact, or is it still just heresay, innuendo & out and out lies.
While it's common knowledge that Leagues clubs are doing it tough because of ALL the legislation that are currently hindering their objectives, surely there is some light at the end of the tunnel now that we have had a change in State government.
Balmain Leagues club were atrociously treated by the Previous Kennelly Labour Government via the Sydney Metro link train station and understandably struggling to stay afloat but this is the Leagues club side of things, not the football club side.
When can we have an answer and will the compensation from the Metro link be the be all and end all?.

Wests Magpies has never been self sufficient at the football club level and always relies on the leagues club to keep it afloat. If the Leagues club decides no more ….. then thats it.

Having said that, the leagues club at Ashfields purpose in life is to raise funding for the promotion and devlopment of rugby league in the area it represents. If it was to cut funding to the Magpies, it wouldn't be a decision that would be easy for them to make. However if the future is the Wests Tigers, which I believe it is at all levels, then it should fund a joint WT junior league and re-brand itself Wests Tigers Leagues club and have one unified club ........ no longer a Joint Venture.

That has been my vision since it all started in 1999.

Will todays article on the pokie pre commitment spell the end for stand alone nsw cup teams and potential junior rep sides?

The Macarthur district will still have the SWAS team. Which is practically a second Wests Magpies Harold Matthews team.

OR has that been punted also.

if there is to be a wt sg ball team and a wt harold matthews team then i think they will be based at campbelltown

Received a letter from the Magpies football club today (signed by the Chairman).

- St George-Illawarra deal not happening.
- Humphreys has proposed two options for State Cup:
1) Wests and Balmain represented in alternative years
2) Wests Tigers State Cup team - alternate weekly between Wests and Balmain jerseys
- All aspects (admin, coaching etc) for Wests and Balmain Junior rep sides to be run by the Wests Tigers
- Wests Ashfield would support the above. But have not committed funding yet for State Cup team for next year.

At least they are talking I guess.
