Benji Marshall #70

The ambassador role is perfect for Benji. He’s popular amongst NRL fans, heavily involved in the media and speaks well. He should be able to entice sponsors and it’s a good news story for the club as it seems we are trying to heal old wounds and support ex players and club legends.

In saying that I didn’t like the way he dragged the club through the mud last year or when he signed with the Auckland Blues. Both times it gave far too much ammunition to the media to bury the club.

Hopefully this appointment can be a win-win for Benji and the Tigers.

We have a pretty crazy amount of support staff now especially for juniors coming through.

It's good to see Benji also being involved with the pathways system how many times have we heard players say they idolised Benji growing up now whilst as time has gone by some may not have seen Benji in his hay days but their parents would have and this could make the difference of a junior signing on with WT'S.

I know that if I was a kid and I had the option to train with Benji Marshall, I'd be demanding my parents figure out where to go, how much to pay, etc.

Doesn't stop there, they have Kimmorley and other coaches, Sheens ect

In the last CEO's update there was no mention of Kimmorley, is he still on board?

Yes mate, was on radio recently said would be working with nrl halves too a bit

Thanks for the info

I know we haven't had much good news the last couple of years but I see some slight changes which give me hope. Sheens back to give us direction off the field, Benji now on board and returning to his home, flicking our old defence coach and replacing with new blood and a group of young fella's who have the potential to build into a good side. You never know and by the way I still believe in Santa. !!!!!!

Benji is gonna have no influence on the field. He’ll be in corporate boxes sipping champagne. A pure PR move by the club. His role has no significance

I think eventually he'll move into coaching.... Despite his own.personal style being ad lib and off the cuff, maybe specialist halves coach, good communicator... Wouldn't surprise me

Dunno about that boss... He might not contribute on field at NRL...
But if they send him out signing up the best kids - His impact would be MASSIVE!!

@JD-Tiger if Madge does get sacked I do expect Ben Gardiner takes over he was given the assistant job because of his connection with the young guys in the team hopefully that’ll rub off onto the experienced ones too

We could do worse than Gardiner I reckon, especially as a caretaker/interim coach and then into the mix for the job. Having him as an assistant is a really good back-up for the situation.

Lets see.

It's a little risky as really we need a coach that would upgrade Madge. I don't see Ben Gardiner as that person.
Particularly as we clearly are a bottom 4 team at the moment, it's a hell of an ask for a coach coming in with no experience.

That said, might work. I notice that Penrith have done what we have done in the past and backed their Juniors. The bond is so strong that you had Nathan Cleary defend Tyrone May... What this shows is that players won't care as much about the cap when they are playing with mates. Good players have even come back to play there.

We need to stop changing the person and start addressing the problem.

We need that club culture. Getting Benji Marshall around the club is critical too that and I am glad he is here and not at souths.

Gardiner has done a good job developing players and bringing them together as a team, both of which Madge has failed to achieve
But NRL is a big step up..
Gardiner will get his opportunity sooner rather than later next season as interim coach...but for how long.
I hope he gets sufficient time to demonstrate his skills in the big show, because if Sheens is in any way unconvinced he will have already scouted Madges replacement from ESL.

Now you have mentioned it it is kind of obvious. He would be an asset there

Who would we be able to attract that is an upgrade on Madge?

He's a multi generational star... Kids these days love him, and 45-50 year olds (Kids Parents) watched him for years also...
Plus he's a great talker....

Absolute no brainer.

Maybe I'm missing the point, but I just cannot fathom the enthusiasm for Marshall returning to WT. It clearly can't be in a future coaching role. On what basis can a "coach" who was a turnstyle in defence (such as Marshall) in all honesty try to improve the defence of others? Where is his credibility?

So, let's consider him as an "attack" coach. Even then his record, in my opinion, is barely a pass mark.

So, if he's some high profile personality (which he is) getting out and about spruiking the WT brand, good on him. Pay him about $50K and let him do his stuff.

But please keep him away from any direct role with coaching and development of our current and future squad.

Keep him for the fairy floss stuff that all clubs have to do. He'll be best suited there.

Not very good bait you are casting there…

I'd rather give the job to Joey Leilua.

Chemical enhancements are certainly attractive to some.
