Benji Marshall and his silly PowerBalance bands

as long as the product does not guarantee results (which it clearly does not) it does not breach any aspect of the trade practices act or truth in advertising provisions.

It is neither illegal or immoral to market or sell and has made the importers millions in Australia (as PT Barnum astutely noted the relationship between suckers & minutes….)

what bemuses me is why a club supporter and forum admin would choose to attack the individual Benji as an "idiot" when the importers are also a team sponsor - when the entire NSW Origin team also wore them under a similar commercial agreement this year - when Manu Vatuvei is in today's Telegraph wearing one - when 50% of the AFL and NRL are wearing them - when professional golfers and surfers are routinely using them - why attack our bloke???

IT has been the subject of scepticism all season, but Benji Marshall's faith in a silicone band on his wrist has the Wests Tigers five-eighth confident he will overcome a knee injury and face the Raiders in Friday night's semi-final at Canberra Stadium.
>
Marshall's love affair with a Power Balance band, a wristband that has its foundations in eastern philosophies and contains a Mylar hologram "designed to work with your body's natural energy flow to help you to perform at the best of your ability", has been well documented this season. He is one of several NRL players who believe in the powers associated with the wristband and it is understood he was wearing it when he bruised his knee medial knee ligament against the Sydney Roosters on Saturday night and has not taken it off since.
>
**"With all the high-tech instruments that we do have, the power band seems to be working very well on Benji Marshall," Tigers football manager Alan Mair said yesterday.**
>
"He believes in it. He wears it all the time, during the game and everything like that.
>
**"He's also gone through all the proper lines of recovery but it's been suggested that the power band might have done the trick.**
>
**"We're all believers."**

There is ZERO, yes, ZERO scientific evidence to base any claim that this scam works. It is plastic with a printed hologram, the same kind of hologram found on credit cards.

If someone was dying of cancer, you would give them medicine/treatment that has been scientifically tested with control groups to ensure that it provides some benefit, and the results published and scruitinised by the scientific community.
**Question:** would you give the same person medicine/treatment that has been scientifically tested and shown to provide NO benefit?
\
\
otherwise, why doesn't the club go and buy the

US$500 super-power-bands made with sterling silver from Bali and equipped with two PB holograms embedded on the back under a clear epoxy resin window for easy viewing

or just buy 1000 of them and they team will never fall over, ever!
\
\
I'm all for people taking the placebo effect out of these things and if it truly makes people like Benji believe in themselves then that's fine. It is just disappointing that comments like Mair's will probably see another 1000 power bands sold this week, that's $60,000 that could be spent on far better things.

just got out of a rebel at lunchbreak looking for tigers warm gear and there was about 3-4 people all lining up at this powerband area

lol..

if they really worked and gave any real power then benji would be wrapping a couple around his bung knee, ellis would be linking about 30 of them together to wrap them around his back and lawrence about half that number to wrap around his head to see if their injuries heal any quicker.

But Australian Rugby League and NSW Origin chief physio, Tony Ayoub, is sceptical.
>
"There's no scientific research behind it.
>
"They do these tests when you're wearing the band and not wearing it and they show an improvement in balance," Ayoub said. "But there's nothing out there published in terms of the scientific data to back it up."
>
Slater confessed to not knowing the technical side to their powers.

Kul - aside from repetition what is your point sir????

I agree they are not medically-scientifically supported - but nor are a million other products that are legitimately on the market!

However - you stubbornly refuse to address any comparisons with other products because you have a myopic focus on this product and Benji!

I also believe they offer absolutely no benefits - but neither did nose-tape or torpedo-shorts!

Caveat Emptor - Buyer Beware!!

Enough said - can you please lock this useless thread as I do not believe this is an appropriate forum to debate these commercial matters!

So does anyone here have any scientific evidence that they **don't** work?? :unamused:

I have proof that it doesn't work Croucher.Fitzy wears one….
Why dont you prove us all wrong Croucher and put one on your ponytail? You might wake up with a real mans haircut. 😱pen_mouth:

They showed a few shots of Benji wearing one and mentioned they sponser the Tigers and Dragons.

They're doing clinical trials with and without them and the results won't be known until December.

If shown to be of any benefit the NRL will not ban them.

Stay tuned!

Of course they dont work. They are rubber and magnets what do you expect.

But like Benji said they cause no harm nor do thry make you perform any worse so it doesnt hurt to wear one

youre goin to need to wear 20 of them to beat me in star league next year!!!

I think Dr Karl summed it up pretty nicely last week during a radio interview:

"You can usually tell something is a scam when their explanation for how their product works is littered with big impressive words like "frequency" and "statistical" and "spectrum", always ending in instructions of how to pay via credit card"

so lets put this to the test:

Power Balance is Performance Technology designed to work with your body’s natural energy field. Founded by athletes, Power Balance is a favorite among elite athletes for whom balance, strength and flexibility are important.Power Balance is based on the idea of optimizing the body’s natural energy flow, similar to concepts behind many Eastern philosophies. The hologram in Power Balance is designed to resonate with and respond to the natural energy field of the body.

in fact there is more information on how to PAY for powerbalance than there is on how it actually works

make your mind up for yourself…

Had a fight with my friend over this and he was fully supporting the power bands coz he likes Benji. I gave it to him on his b'day 2 months ago. Never seen him where it yet!! LOL

i haven't read the whole thread but here are some points.

1\. you can get them much cheaper on ebay than $60.
2\. i have no idea if it is scientifically proven or not but as a sceptic, i did a test of it and it did improve balance for me. I'd suggest trying it to see if you think it has some effect (placebo or not) and then make up your mind. I've tested it on a few people and every one has noticed an improvement in balance and strength doing the test where you pull down to get them off balance. It won't turn you into an Olympic weightlifter instantly though..
3\. it won't change someones life but i never expected it would. i've got one bad knee and if it improves my balance whilst playing cricket, then it is doing its job.
4\. pro surfers, NBA players and Tour De France riders wear them, not just footy players.
5\. yes i have one.
6\. ACA and Today Tonight are as reputable as the Daily Telecrap.
7\. if benji gets paid to endorse, good luck to him.
