BENJI Marshall ignored weeks of phone calls and messages from top NRL staff, who feared he could be lost to rugby union if they didn't intervene, The Daily Telegraph can reveal.
>
It was another day of drama in rugby league, with Marshall's pending code switch and the departure of Parramatta CEO Ken Edwards from the troubled Eels taking the spotlight off Wednesday night's State of Origin decider.
>
NRL chief operating officer Jim Doyle made several attempts to contact Marshall while the star playmaker considered his future.
>
The ex-NZRL boss and Marshall share a relationship from the Kiwi side, but Doyle didn't get to have a detailed discussion until Tuesday.
>
While Marshall is expected to switch codes after requesting a release from the Tigers on Monday night, Doyle is still trying to change his mind.
>
"I'll continue to talk to him every day to try and convince him to stay in rugby league," Doyle said.
>
**"The last thing we want is to lose a player like Benji, after what he's done for the game. That's a big part of the reason why I was trying to talk to him for the last couple of weeks."**
>
NRL boss Dave Smith also spoke with Marshall Tuesday, but League Central's hopes of keeping the 28-year-old in the code depend on whether the Tigers permit him to play for a rival club.

>
"Sadly it seems he is pretty clear about his intentions," Smith said. "It would be great to see him stay in the game and we are happy to talk with him at any time."
>
The Tigers briefed the NRL during negotiations, which began in April when former club CEO Stephen Humphreys allegedly promised Marshall a two-year extension.
>
But Humphreys' departure sparked a change of heart, with interim Tigers boss Grant Mayer and board members insistent that the club was not contractually obligated to extend Marshall's deal.
>
**"There's a very clear letter written into the contract by (Humphreys) to sit down with Benji Marshall when the new TV deal is done. That was about a regrade, not an extension," Mayer said.**
>
The terms of Marshall's release request were thrashed out during a meeting of the Tigers' retention committee Tuesday night.
>
The NSW Waratahs and Auckland Blues are favoured to sign Marshall.

Sorry for yet another thread on a well covered subject, but this shows some pretty damning things. I know its a DT story, but direct quotes from the NRL COO and our own acting CEO show clear falsehoods perpetrated by Camp Marshall during this period.

god this is becoming more like a bloody soap opera.

final line is benji is leaving. tigers are looking to the future and benji will not be part of it.

end of story. analysing more and more will just brainfk you

I know, just burns me up after making peace. Tauber truly is scum.

Hope Benji realises this soon and dumps him.

I now that is what I reckon … Benji and his Manager are all about the money full stop GREED , GREED , GREED

Don't blame him for ignoring calls to be honest. When you're going through a time with major changes in your life & trying to sort out your future last thing you want are people trying to change your mind. I would've ignored 'em too if I was him, probably helped him get a clearer mind tbh.

Be interesting to see if any pressure is applied to the club by the NRL to get them to allow Benji a release to another NRL club. If I was Mayer I would tell them to jump, we don't owe Benji any favors

Yes, except that camp Marshall claimed just a day or two ago that the NRL had done nothing to try to keep him:

This is not the first time I've noticed porkies being directly contracticted by credible sources which were never rebutted. Makes it hard to believe anything that comes out of Taubers slippery mouth.

There is another article. Stating the only way he will stay in the nrl is if the tigers grant a release. Sound like tauber is angling for this. Benji must know that at 30 not many clubs will sign him on any decent money. Link in a moment

Wests Tigers superstar Benji Marshall playing the blame game

BENJI Marshall wants us to believe the NRL and Wests Tigers have let him down. Maybe it's time Benji reflected on exactly what the game has given him.

The fame and fortune, opportunity and privilege.

If he's not careful, when Benji walks away he won't be remembered for the player he once was but a bloke who just didn't get how lucky he was.

When Benji's manager, Martin Tauber, did an interview on Sky Sports Radio on Tuesday it was as embarrassing as it was disrespectful to every fan who pays their way through the gate to watch Benji play.

It brought back memories of Mal Meninga's "rugby league has done nothing for me" line during the days of Super League.

Tauber was telling his warped version of events that led to Benji requesting a release from the final two years of his contract.

The question was put to Tauber whether the NRL had tried to convince Benji to stay?
\
\
"We had no approach in any way, shape or form from the NRL," Tauber said.

"I would have thought somebody of his stature and what he brings to the game in terms of bums on seats, merchandising and everything else, the NRL would have stood up and said, 'This is one individual we don't want to lose'."

No one wants to lose Benji but Tauber seemed to be forgetting this: It was Benji who requested the release from the final two years of his contract.

Benji was the one who went to Bali for a mid-season break and returned home and told Tauber he wanted out.

Now Tauber is turning it into the NRL's fault.

Not content with that, Tauber also went public with Benji's broken relationship with Mick Potter. Potter, as Tauber explained, is in Benji's bad books for having the audacity to drop him because he was playing like a busted.

Asked if they had a working relationship, Tauber said: "No, no, no, no. Everybody knows that. From the benching, when he put him on the bench that day. I mean that started an avalanche in terms of their relationship."

Tauber's right, it is no secret in league circles. But to publicly air it was disrespect of the highest order to the entire Wests Tigers playing group, which now has to walk on eggshells for the remainder of the season.

It's worth remembering Tim Sheens got sacked last year after he fell out with Benji.

Now Tauber is saying one of the reasons he wants out is because Benji doesn't get on with this coach.

It goes back to the handshake agreement Benji had with former chief executive Stephen Humphreys that was supposed to see his salary skyrocket to a reported $1 million a season until the end of 2017.

Anyone who has seen Benji play over the last two years knows there is no way the new management could honour that deal and do the right thing by the club and the fans, no matter how many bums Benji puts on Leichhardt Oval's limited seats.

Yet even still, the Tigers were willing to upgrade his pay to a reported $800,000 a season until the end of 2015.

This still didn't satisfy Benji. As Tauber said: "He feels let down. It's not always about money."

You make up your own mind on that.

Link in a moment. It would be I've if the app didn't quit when I switched...

The game made Benji what he is and gave him what he has.
The game - and our club, owes him nothing.

Tauber seem to think otherwise

Best thing BM could do right now is get another manager

Was Tauber present when they shook on it.

Tauber knows Benji is nearing the end of his rainbow and is milking it for his final 5 %.as simple as that . I'm actually getting bored with all the Benji drama and the longer it drags the less respect ill have for Benji .its all about the money ,as simple as that .Humpheys should never get a gig in rugby league again after promising anybody 1million a season.NO wonder NOycie walked when he did .

Tauber must be losing a lot of credibility with NRL clubs after the Moltzen/St George fiasco. Tauber and his client did exactly the same thing….reneged on a handshake deal. He is a hypocritical, slimy germ of the highest order. Cant trust a word this guy says....we should bar any dealings with him. Even if it means showing a few guys the door just to prove a point.

So his own manager has for all intents and purposes admitted that Benji chucked a hissy fit when faced with consequences (benching).

Benji do yourself a favour and tell your manager to zip it before you more into the pariah category rather then legend.

Amazing that this rubbish dominates the headlines when Origin is the biggest thing going on

Any sadness I was feeling about Benji leaving has now gone. I knew in my head it was the best thing for him to go but my heart was still a little sad. Well now the only sadness I feel is that this matter is still being discussed in the media. Can't wait to cheer Robbie and Aaron on tonight in the origin.
