Best single line lyrics of all time?

Kenny Rogers always had great lyrics. My fave was:

“That's when I asked her, my place or your place, I hope I'm not out of line.
I asked the wrong thing, to just the right woman this time.
'Cause she knew a hotel, she even had a name we could sign.
Whoa, oh, the cheaper the grapes are, the sweeter the taste of the wine”

Haha, so relatable back in my 20s.

I also loved Coward of the County:

"I promised you, Dad, not to do the things you've done. I walk away from trouble when I can.
Now please don't think I'm weak, I didn't turn the other cheek. And Papa, I should hope you understand. Sometimes you gotta fight when you're a man.”

I left my heart to the sappers 'round Khe Sanh
And my soul was sold with my cigarettes to the black-market man
I've had the Vietnam cold turkey, from the ocean to the Silver City
And it's only other vets could understand

That opening to the Don Walker penned song was released when I was twelve years old, reckoning with puberty and things going on that I wouldn't have a decent understanding of until much later in life.

Importantly, it properly opened my eyes to the suffering of the still broken young men in my extended family and community that had served in Vietnam, but were absent from the Anzac Day Parade the morning following my purchase of the Cold Chisel album.

So we open up a quarrel
Between the present and the past
We only sacrifice the future
It's the bitterness that last
So don't yield to the fortunes, you sometimes see as fate
It may have a new perspective, on a different day
And if you don't give up, and don't give in, you may just be OK

The Living Years - Mike & the Mechanics
Just always felt that song had some great lyrics about generational differences & leaving things unsaid.

Where do you start? Working Class Hero..

As soon as you're born they make you feel small
By giving you no time instead of it all
'Til the pain is so big you feel nothing at all

They hurt you at home and they hit you at school
They hate you if you're clever and they despise a fool
'Til you're so f****** crazy you can't follow their rules

When they've tortured and scared you for 20 odd years
Then they expect you to pick a career
When you can't really function, you're so full of fear

Keep you doped with religion, and sex, and T.V.
And you think you're so clever and classless and free
But you're still f****** peasants as far as I can see

There's room at the top they are telling you still
But first you must learn how to smile as you kill
If you want to be like the folks on the hill

I still think people pick the wrong Lennon song to canonise.

Like Cohen and Dylan you can take many phrases from Lennon's songs and hear the truth. The art of songwriting in modern music is sadly lacking.
