Hi Guys, we are downsizing from a house to an apartment and currently we use Telstra for everything, Fox, Phones, Broadband. Where we are moving to if we want Fox, we need to use Foxtel Now, so no IQ boxes, so basically streaming everything.

I have seen some adds promoting Aussie Broadband, which seems to have local support if needed, which appeals to me, so no calls to offshore call centres. Is anyone else using Aussie ?

If so any feedback, i.e modem quality, speed, reliability, contracts etc.

Any other suggestions also would be appreciated.

Why do you need to use Foxtel now. Have you confirmed that the apartment is not wired for Foxtel? It may be worth double checking. I know a lot of older buildings aren’t but many modern buildings are. We just downsized to a 1 bedroom apartment and the complex is wired for Foxtel satellite and works with an IQ4. The only channels we miss out on are the free to air SD channels.

Currently we have Tangerine (VOCUS) NBN and haven’t had any issues so far. We’ve used Aussie Broadband before, very helpful and had no issues with them either, pretty good service actually.

Hi Mike, the apartment is still being finalised, maybe 6 weeks before we can move in, we have been told they are just installing NBN but no Foxtel connections, hence we need to stream everything. TBH, I am thinking only Kayo, Netflix, Stan, we have the full Foxtel package now and hardly use it.

If your staying in Port Macquarie, its a mish mash of NBN - newer estates, resorts and new apartments in town get FTTP which is what you want. The majority of the rest is FTTN and then there is Wireless for areas that can't access the other 2. Its a pain in the butt - we own a unit in Coffs Harbour that we rent out and it gets FTTP only because Coffs was in the early rollout. The whole NBN is a lottery.

Yeah staying in Port, moving to a new apartment near Port City Bowling club, hopefully as you say we have FTTP which would be good.

When you're in your new place and hopefully the football kicks off we will have to get together for a drink and watch the game at Port City - i live at Lake Cathie.

If it comes up blank let me know and can find out easily whats planned.

Yeah didn't show anything, the developer did say the NBN guys will be there maybe next week to do what they need to do 🙂

What is FTTP and FTTN? Does it stand for Fibre to the node/premises?

FTTP - Fibre to Premises (basically Fibre runs all the way to the ntd/box in your home, you can get 1gbps speeds)

FTTN - Fibre to Node (you have the existing copper network but nbn placed dslams more frequently across those areas, closer to homes to allow for VDSL to run which can get 100mbs if 800meters of shorter from the node. nbn doesn’t provide a device)

FTTC - Fibre to the curb (Fibre runs to the pit / pole outside your house which connects to a mini dslam using the copper lead-in already existing - nbn device provided and you can get 100mbps easily, will be able to get 1gbps soon)

Thanks for the info MT. Has made it all a lot clearer.
When choosing a service provider are they able to tell you whether you have FTTN, FTTP or FTTC before you actually sign up with them?

Yeah they should. To place an order with nbn they need to do a service qualification check as the service providers process is different for each technology.

The big providers have an online service check that tells you before selecting the plan/contract as well

If you get an install kit from nbn or the service provider a guide is provided to you with information as well.

If you have any issues send me a pm and can find out for you.

Problem with that map it assumes that NBN are putting in nodes where the pillars are. That is definitely not the case where we are.

I am having an appalling time after i signed up to Optus NBN.Absolutely nothing i was promised is happening and to make matters worse they did not even organise NBN to do their part.AVOID them.

Aussie Broadband is they way to go. Victoria based company that does an outstanding job. When you call you are answered by them in Australia.

Thanks for the tip,you are the second person to tell me that the first was the bloke who has been doing all my computer upgrades/builds for the last 20 years

Aussie Broadband, we live in a regional area and it works brilliantly and as @mike said exceptional customer service.

Optus are a terrible company all around I had multiple issues with them in terms of costumer service and product. So glad I ditched them

I was with Optus prior to switching onto the NBN and couldn't stand them - poor service and disconnecting was even more frustrating. I'm with Aussie broadband and they're been the best ISP I've used, just ahead of iPrimus. I'd happily recommend them and customer support is based in Australia - Not Malaysia.
