Chris Lawrence confirms his staying at the tigers

He's playing with a couple of niggling injuries but at this point i think for his own good he should have a break and have surgery on whatever needs fixing.

I suggested lawrence should try and lose some weight next year to try and find some speed but i don't think he will lose weight easily as he carries bugger all fat at the moment and dropping muscle can be hard. He definitely needs a sprint coach and a lot of agility work over the offseason.

Maybe consider a move to lock next year.. Improve defence in off season. His speed is past him now i think.

These calls to move him to the backrow are just getting ridiculous.

Just what we need, another small backrower with no impact.

No no no no no.

He is contracted and on decent coin. It is either backrow or centre.

I don't agree he would have no impact. He still runs the ball with venom. Size isn't everything as Greg Bird shows week in week out.

I can see him playing effectively in a Luke Lewis role.

But I agree it is difficult to play him there given out already small back row.

He is contracted, but so were Fifita, Gibbs, Heighington, Ayshford, Marshall etc. etc.

If he isn't good enough to play in the centres then he should be sent packing like the rest of them,

Mixed feelings on this one he was such a great player I just keep hoping we will see the best of him again. If it doesn't happen next year it will never happen

He's a good tackler, but a terrible defender. There is a difference.

He has the uncanny ability to find himself between attacking players, and always choosing the guy on the inside, who is generally someone else's.

One of the many tries today- they were coming at him, he came in (and missed everyone) & I saw Anasta coming across in the backplay blowing up because Lawrence came in on his guy instead of staying on his own guy. Just a typical Lawrence defensive lapse.

As for his lost speed- I can live with that. Not all outside backs are fast. So long as he runs good lines & can set up his supports, he's fine. Terry Hill made a career out of being a slow centre, as has Justin Hodges.

100% correct, I wrote much the same thing in another thread. It is the Takarangi try you are talking about… we could unfortunately make a lowlights reel of Lawrence making wrong decisions when confronted with an advancing line.

I have an anecdote - I play touch footy with a bloke who used to play first grade. He's still a good footballer and evasive; he also used to be very quick over a distance, but age is catching up with him. His one problem is he still plays like he is super quick, so he gives opponents room to move, thinking he can just reel them in, but is starting to get found out by quick young blokes.

Rowdy is in this position now. In his first two years as a centre he had defensive issues, but he worked hard and was able to use his pace to make up for bad initial decisions. That pace is gone, and we appear to be left just with the bad decisions.

The true greats like Lockyer and Fittler learned to adjust their game as their bodies changed over time. Rowdy is clearly a disciplined and determined footballer, but he needs to change his playing style to suit his current abilities, otherwise it's only going to get worse.

He'd be good on the edges as a backrower, off the bench…

I think that this might suit him. Play him as the 4th bench player who can come on predominantly as a wide running second rower.

I, for one am glad Chris is staying at the Tigers… Honest and hard working individual, and that's what we need at this club.

:sign:

Chris is a great guy one in a million, and has been a fantastic player for us over the year's, but if the tigers are serious about turning thing's around something need's to be done, give him an off season to pick up some speed and learn to defend, if he does'nt improve then he need's to be tapped on the shoulder and see if anyone else want's him.

Fix up the injuries lose the muscle mass become learner (Jamie Lyon) type can be done … get a sprint coach and finally the Tigers for the first time in history get a REAL DEFENSIVE coach to teach this team how to defend.

Think weve already done this,& to the surprise of no-one there isnt anybody out there willing to pay the $380k or so for a genuine reserve grader…so we are where we are.
We have a responsibility to Chris given the circumstances causing his demise,& have to balance that against the best interests of the team in not carrying a liability for the next 3/4 years.
not a simple one

He has been playing injured.

Now that we are out of contention I expect him to have the surgery required asap.

Very brave of him to play and IMO hasnt been as bad as many on here think.

Agreed. I definitely think he is worth persevering with

Yeah his been bad..His reads in defence are atrocious. He came in again to take the inside man but missed him leaving an overlap. His done that how many times this year ?
He came in and tryed to take Anasta's man…Why ? Why do that ? he did the same thing when Milky was there..coming in and taking no one leaving an overlap. How can such an experienced player be so ineffective.

I'll be honest, I am sort of glad Chris is going to stay.

I'll admit to bagging him and calling for him to be dropped at various times, he certainly hasn't been up to NRL standard for a while….but dammit I still like him. I just can't help but think with a decent stint free from chronic niggles he could still be the player we all remember.

Call me a dreamer, but I still want to believe.

I'm with ya LaT! Chris is still only 24, he has youth on his side. Surely he can come back from wherever it is he has been for the past 2 years. He doesn't seem the type to just throw in the towel and coast along. Hopefully, with an injury free off season he can put in the work he needs to get back to at least something close to where he was in 2011 😛ray:
