Clubs fight over the next Benji

leave or stay, there will always be another up and comer five-eigth looking for an opportunity at the tigers, a team full of stars in their own way like the woods, Tedesco, brooks, moses who are insync with each other will always be better than one individual star, team first, individual second, no disrespect.
 
It won't matter what rising halves are coming through,for the next 5 years we are stuck with Brooks and Moses…doesn't matter how good the next kids are we have been TOLD brooks and Moses.,.end of story...to bad if they don't make the cut in the next few seasons,other talent will go elsewhere and absolutely kill it at another club..but that's what the WTs do...
 
Has Martin at least played NSW cup yet?

Problem is that NYC is basically glorified touch footy, which makes it hard to gauge the true potential of a player.

Some players make the step up without a problem, but others struggle to make the transition to Playing with the big boys. So while I don't doubt martin's class and talent, it doesn't automatically make him an NRL star in the making.

I don't think it's poor management on the club's behalf; on the contrary I actually think it's smart to have kept him around. One of the biggest worries here is that he'll be picked up by someone else and go on to have a big career FOR THEM instead of us. Except, it's no sure thing he will go on to become a star. Just like Moses or Brooks are no certainties. They look the part, sure, but if they didn't, or Moses never recovered from his leg injury (sounded pretty serious!) then at least they had Martin as a potential replacement. Beau Henry and Carlos Tuimavave both tore up their age groups but never kicked on as NRL halves and Mitch Cornish had big wraps but has barely played for Canberra.

Yet Martin might still have a big role to play in all this. In fact, last year things were even bleaker - he had Blake Austin ahead of him as well. Brooks and Moses have held up really well considering all the traffic coming their way but if an injury occurred the club would have to be tempted to keep Drinkwater in NSW Cup and promote Martin instead.

The shame is that if he does leave, the only thing we get is a thanks from the team that signs him for doing most of the hard yards.

What depth do we have????
no backs depth at all, or at least none that they'll use in the halves, no depth in the forwards except Cherrington, still a bit of a risk,
Front row is about the only position that's covered.
 
As i've said before he should be patient, but players tend to only be patient at large professional clubs like the Dogs, Storm, Broncos, Roosters etc..

Mbye re-signed with teh Dgos despite having the current State of origin halves in front of him. He played NSW Cup for a year or two and in NRL he's already played centre, 5/8, half and hooker. Now he's in a position both pyhsically and tactically to play halves in the NRL and the Dogs are moving on an origin half to keep him.

Martin doesn't have proven rep players in front of him. As much as i'd like all 3 juniors to kick on i have a feeling only 2 will. I think Martin will be one, and one of Brooks/Moses. Hard to say who. But i do hope all 3 stay.

Which clubs can realistically offer Martin a start at 5/8 next year?

I'd say Manly, and they are the main threat. They'd need someone cheapish due to investing so much in DCE.

Are the titans going to have 2 20 eyar old halves? Doubtful. Martin has no allegiance to the Gold Coast. He's lived in Sydney as long as he lived up there. Warriors? Maybe if he wants to go home. Raiders, Dogs, Parra, Souths, Broncos, Cowboys, Dragons all have top halves covered for next season. Penrith could move Wallace for him. Roosters have Hastings as their replacement for Maloney. Sharks Maloney, Barba, possibly Townsend coming back too.

There really aren't many clubs that will give him a shot in the near future. But if he's playing in nsw cup and developing, would he rather do that here with his mates, or at Manly, Melbourne, Roosters…

All that only comes into if he feels he has a pathway to the NRL. Can you honestly say that the club will be flexiable and willing to replace either Brooks or Moses should Martins form deserve selection?

There is no evidence of that pathway existing, not at this stage.
 
What happens if Moses or Brooks misses a game due to injury or suspension and this kid comes up and kills it…?
 
Why can't he come off the bench, like Milford did for 1-2 years at the raiders?

His defense still needs to improve imo as well. He's still got a little while to go as well.

The word you are looking for is vision!

9 times out of 10 his ability to read the play sees him come up with the right option.

Only the best of the best have his kind of vision.
 
I can't believe there are people complaining about the situation we are currently in. We have 3 of perhaps the Top 5 half prospects in the game at our club, 2 signed up until end 2017.

How can this be bad management? Why would we abandon the Keebra Park arrangement that has brought through players like Benji, BMM, Rangi Chase, Martin, Seve. I'd much rather have a crack at Martin as a 17 year old than be one of the clubs now circling and having to pull out the chequebook to pay overs. Because certainly any club that takes Martin away are paying for potential, not current capability.

And especially so with Keebra, many of the kids we take on are not QLDers, so we aren't competing as often with the QLD geographical loyalties that Broncos dominate (e.g. w Jordan Kahu).

I think it's always a tactical advantage to bring a kid through your juniors: you usually get to choose who you keep. You look at Manly from a few years ago, they chose to keep DCE over Hodkinson, and both players went on to better things. There are so many examples of good and bad guesses in junior retention.

Let's also keep perspective, that Moses and Brooks were signed to 4-year deals in 2013\. At the time their potential and pedigree was as good as any young juniors we've had. They have not destroyed the competition but there is nothing to say that they cannot become elite players, at least not anything less than the possibility of Martin become an elite footballer.

If Martin was playing for another club's NYC, we would 100% have no chance in picking him up. At least in this position we have some chance of retaining him for a while longer.
 
We have no money to chase a couple of quality NRL standard players so why are we going to go into a bidding war trying to sign a no6\. I mean they let Austin walk and he was a proven performer and could play every position on the park bar prop. They may make up a offer and hope for the loyalty vote, but really he is going to get heaps offered to him and we will not be able to match the offer and no6 is not our major priority
 
We might want to sign him but why would he stay unless we paid massive overs. He has an opportunity at first grade somewhere hope he picks a club with some good forwards and kills it

TBH i cant see any other club offering him a walk up start in first grade anyway. I dont think he would be a starting half at any club at the moment, probably not even next year unless he goes to the Titans, and that could be a career killer.

At least at the Tigers he knows he is 1 injury away from getting a start and he knows the players and staff.

He may go elsewhere but he won't be walking into any NRL sides. He still has work to do first, here or elsewhere.
