Coaching

Benji is attack coach, and that’s where he’s getting found out. He must be speaking a foreign language gauging by the team’s efforts in the attack zone.
The only thing different is the additional passing from anywhere on the field, which I applaud btw.
Robbie is doing a great job, and has improved our D on our line, obviously under the overarching eye of Furner.
I heard sheens state benji is red zone attack coach.... Farah is coming outta trouble off our line attack coach... Furner D

Who would really know what the coaches are doing?
As a general overall observation, and following this last narrow loss, I think most of the players don’t have the will to win attitude.
It’s obviously a challenge for an experienced coach, with the ladder position constantly serving up a reminder of how we compare with other teams.
So how does a coach encourage the self confidence and belief in each player? The necessary ingredient for success.
Some good coaches like Bellamy, Sheens, Bennett, Walters, Payton, have the emotional intelligence to identify the importance of all 17 running onto the park having the confidence that they will contribute to a win on the day.
The players who don’t have the will to win are probably those who make the most mistakes?
So how do the top coaches drive that must win mentality?

Benji is probably trying to coach things only a freak player like him could do.
It's obvious Farah has had input I've noticed the good old Robbie run around play this year.
Sheens is sipping Earl Grey tea he doesn't know what's going on.

We're in good hands. The 50% win rate gang will have us teetering in 9th position again in no time.

What stands out in players like Bula, is the self belief, the confidence they have in their own ability.
Players doing their 200 passes would have made a difference to up their confidence, but what else are they doing in that area? I mean apart from repetitive skills training?
I’ve worked in buildings where all the women get pregnant at the same time, it can’t be coincidence 😲
There has to be a reason why the club reacts to the daily prevailing circumstances and changes tact more often than a maxi yacht on its way to Hobart.
At least the maxi yacht knows where it’s going.
Our board would be stranded on Thursday Island.

I can’t wait for the glory days of coming 9th to return! Happy days!

For years Robinson has been trumpeted as a master coach. This year he has the squad that was expected to win the comp and yet the Roosters look nothing like teams he has coached before.
Recruited poorly, combinations not working, and players out of form - coach who looked untouchable now experiencing pressure.

Robo has always appeared to me as someone who overanalyses.
The club obviously has friends in high places, if they can get Lodge on a T&T? No such luck for Manly.

I captain coach coached a US Army Rugby team a while back. We lost our first game 66-0 and went on to lose the next 6 emphatically. Our problems were many, new team, converting novices to play against experienced and developed sides and the language barrier.

We had Australian, Kiwi and Brit Army representative level player coaches at hooker, second row and lock and Brit representative coaching the backs but despite the experience and enthusiasm we could bot convert effort into points.

The season in the US us played autumn and spring due to the snow. Half way through the season we were at the bottom of the ladder. In the winter break we continued to train 0430 -0630 twice a week sun or snow. We went on to win the competition, and represent Mussouri at the national titles where we finished third. So what changed?

The coaching was the same standard and focussed on the fundamentals. The game plan didn't change until we could execute the basics well. The change was that we had a US Army representative 5/8 posted in. He could read the game, kick, pass and defend. More importaintly he came with no baggage in relation to the first half of the season. His calmness in attack and ability to kick us out of trouble gave our backline confidence that I couldn't coach into them.

Once we won the first game, which was close, there was a change in mindset. Morale improved, off the ball effort improved, novice players started picking up flaws in more experienced players games and were not afraid to speak out.

Different standard and different game sure; however, it shows that even with the right coaching we couldn't compete. We needed the right players, in our case a player, to transition the team.

We have known for years where our weakness us. Like all of the coaches before, Sheens and Benji thought they could change Brooks They couldn't and we are where we are because of it.

I'm not saying that the coaching couldn't be better, but efforts on the basics aren't wasted. Add on a good 6 and 7 and we are off the bottom of the table with no changes other than that. Add in some additional mongrel in the pack and at centre and we could be in the 8.

Get an experienced attack coach in to support through 24 and take over in 25 and I think we will be OK.

Good post Jolls.
When we went all the way in 2005, it was because the players collectively decided to become a real team and get the job done. If only we could bottle the sequence of events leading up to that moment.

Just throwing it out there if we miss Justin Holbrook & John Morris as an assistant coach, I would have a crack at:

Matt Parish - coach of WC finalists Samoa

Steve Georgallis - final year of contract at Cows I believe, helped Payten with his experience

Both have ties to our club!

Nice post BlackWhiteGold i am hoping that they move on Scott Mckenna and promote Robbie Mears if would take on that role as Flegg Coach. There needs to be a changed across all grades this off season and personally would not seen Stevie G back coaching the club again.

This pre-season I want our coaching to put a HUGE emphasis on attacking kicks, catching high balls & legally protecting the man catching the high ball.

Practice, practice, practice and I want to see our halves & outside backs doing 'extras' before and after training like Nathan Cleary does.

I want Bula, Staines, T'oa, Tupou, Feledy, Ngutlik, Reilly & whoever else our OBs will become experts at executing high ball catches & protection.

And Koroisau, Da Silva, Sullivan, Fainu, Sezer , Galvin, Matai hone their grubbers, spiral bombs, cross field kicks, drop outs.

Both areas we probably rate 17th in the NRL for.

As I have said previously I have watched a few training sessions this year. Was surprised they hardly trained on the 5th tackle option, I assumed they would be training repeat after repeat! Look maybe they do it later in the week, but I thought it would be every training session.

Any updates on a new Assistant Coach?

Rewind 4 weeks and some managers reportedly said any of their players possibly signing with us was contingent on securing another experienced assistant to then support Benji in '25.

Two names initially mentioned by ITKs were Holbrook and Morris with Holbrook now off the market.
