@beachtiger Tigers are looking at Jai Arrow as their priority target for 2021 according to reports. Cap wouldn't be an issue by then

So if you sign a player for X amount it really means nothing because a year later they can just demand more money and threaten to leave if they don't get it.

How do you balance a salary cap if this is the case?

Agree and this looks more like good news and managers are already 1 step ahead of everyone and fighting over cap being freed up. I have no problem with Matto being upgraded much the same as how we upgraded Corey at the end of last season mid contract.

Simples...Just give him the money that Chris Lawrence would’ve received, if that’s what we have to do to keep Matterson at the Club then so be it.

As I said earlier we can't just do that as the offer to Chris is around minimum wage, so the money we would have paid Chris needs to go to his replacement.

I think this shows that the Tigers are about to free up some $ from somewhere else!

Thanks, Cochise didn’t see your earlier post...I think his obviously aware of the impeding musical chairs that will happen at our Club with some of our players being move on and just wants a bigger slice of the pie - before the money gets spent elsewhere, which I think is fair enough, he knows his worth to the club (possible future Captain and all)...That is if what’s been reported is in fact true or just “fake news”.

You get more than 2 or 3 good players so you don't hurt as much if one leaves.

I think you are spot on, We are supposed to hear about Matulino's retirement soon, if that is approved that will free up a chunk of cash. Then add to it possible movements in relation to Reynolds and Packer, we should be able to easily upgrade Matterson and he certainly deserves it!

He’s got 2 yrs to go. Wants more cash. Agent cries. parra favourites, but they can’t speak to him for a couple of years. Its an agent beat up for cash. Pretty straight forward. That’s where Chammas gets his stories from. Pathetic.

But, he’s worth more than 350.

I reckon Reynolds and packer are gone and the agent is looking for a better deal.

He’d be right in deserving this. Sign him up. 500, performance kpis to 700, and captaincy in the next 12-18 months and renegotiate from there. Otherwise let his manager write a letter as well and drop him like a slimey potato.

Don’t forget he complained of not being treated right compared to other players when he left sombrero city, now he doesn’t like the coach. Seems a little high maintenance for a second rower if you ask me - but that may just be his 10%er though

He is not a $0.5M player ...... yet!

This is true but the team won’t get better by paying a rostered player more money. There can be a trade off more years for more money. Every problem can become an opportunity if you have the right approach.

100%! I'd use his desire for more cash to sign him up for a longer stay. The upgrade only works if both parties get something extra in return!

The player money only goes one way. Overpaid contracted players sit back smirking as they rub their paunch.

Underpaid contracted players get annoyed and make up reasons to leave clubs.

The vicious cycle of NRL.

Phase 1: The rebuild
Weak Club struggles, over pays for talent. Attracts two marquee players but over pays. Compounding this club pays $300k - 500k if freight due to moving some players on during rebuild.

Phase 2: Developing talent
Two seasons of slight improvement (9th to 12th placed team). Marquee players not as good out of elite roster. Some juniors emerge due to opportunity

Fans dare to dream (cue ominous music)
Signs of roster improving.

Phase 3: Death wobbles
New talent start seeing what $’s overpaid talent within club is on. Frustration settles in. They start watching friends from junior reps teams/carnivals achieving success in strong clubs. Their manager has a vested interest in them earning more (anywhere) and gets in their ear.

Phase 4: Wheels come off.
Success doesn’t come and a strong club or phase 1 rebuild club swoops in and takes just enough talent. Club can’t afford to protect the nest because they paid to attract the two or three ‘marquee’ players during the clean up and rebuild.

Key talent departs. Journalists/ vultures dive in.,Coach gets booted. Over paid marquee players underperform or get jack of lack of success. Club over pays to keep or get a couple of plodders to fill gaps in roster.

The only things that break the cycle are:
1. Epic new coach or coach with pulling power
2. Pipeline of juniors is strong enough to cover a few player losses.
3. Club achieves enough success in phase 2 to keep players onboard. All three are usually required to break the cycle.

Titans lack all three
We lack the juniors and the success
Newcastle lack coach and juniors are a little light
Parra, Dragons and Penrith lack the coach

Good test for new GM Hartigan and Maguire. Who said the offseason would be boring!

Wasn't it reported that Matterson played a key part in Josh Aloia's re-signing? Which wasn't all that long ago from memory. Doesn't make sense that he would talk up the club to help keep a team mate only to think we're unprofessional a couple of months later.

Like some have already said (& this is a great point), maybe his Mgr is aware of cap space becoming available to to Tigers shedding some players & is after an increase for his client. Matterson definitely deserves it thats for sure.

Ah well only 6 months till round 1.

I think it is more complicated and dangerous than that.

So we sign Matterson up for 5 years at 500k per year or so. At the end of next year when he has played SOO and had a great years he knows he can get his manager to leak negative info to the media and ask for more money again. It also tells the rest of the team and all future players that Wests Tigers can be pushed around if they are scared to lose you.

Doubt he’d be happy being only on 350k for the next two years when he’s worth double that. Club should look to upgrade him, despite the cap drama.

Rubbish!

Matterson signed a contract for a certain amount of money. That’s it.

The journo was Michael Chaamas...............he gets EVERY Tigers story. i.e. THE CLUB feeds Chaamas this stuff.

This is us trying to make the player look bad.

@ElleryHanley If you're right, then we are well and truly screwed. Because this doesn't make Matterson look bad. Not to the other clubs, not to other fans. If we leaked this story, trying to make him look bad, he will definitely end up leaving us, and we will continue to be the laughing stock of the league. No way can we attract anyone in any good stature if we lose our best player AGAIN.

4 days into a 6 month off-season yeah? They need to give us a break.

It is not a matter of being correct, it is literally a fact that fact that Chaamas gets all the Tigers stories first...no one can even really debate that. So, someone at the club is feeding him it all.

This should have been kept in house.

I would be very surprised if the club would leak that Matterson and Maguire were at odds. That puts them in a position to lose their best player and makes their coach look bad at the same time. If that was what happened I would have to seriously reevaluate my opinion of those running our club as it would be unforgivable!

Could this situation with Matterson have influenced him not receiving the ‘Player of the Year Award’ this week - with the award going to Brooks...?

The situation is bad enough, but you could imagine the headlines “Player of the Year wants out!!”

If it’s true, it’s a public relations disaster....!! And once again will make the club look like a basket-case...!!

I think it's a basket case now since the bottle of grange lover was appointed... I haven't heard anything from him on what he's doing to strengthen the club while the ex-employee was always pro-active and now she's gone
