Having had a bit of a think about this and letting it set in.

Im all for making him stick to his contract or sitting out 2 years.

I dont want anyone as compensation.

Screw him.

I'm not going to draw and quarter the bloke before it plays out ..but I agree with this...

Time for a line in the sand..no more doormat..

If we still had an average coach i would be less convinced but Maguire is a decent coach and the excuses just dont stack up now. This aint Mitchell Moses and an average coach.

This is the line in the sand moment.

Spot on. Cave in and it sets a precedent we can’t afford. Give in and release and it does the same.
Stand your ground and only grant a release if we benefit. What happened with Cleary was exactly the Same thing. Let’s hope it’s the same outcome.

Not only a precedent its sets a tone for this whole club. Enough is enough.

This is how you get moved to Perth.

Either he is all in or we make the guy sit out 2 years.

If he wants to leave we HAVE to draw a line in the sand and force him to sit in reserve grade for 2 years. Unlike Mitchell Moses, who was on a lot of money at the time, we can afford to sacrifice 350k of our salary cap in this instance.

This is ONLY about money in my opinion. Very poor form. He was a guy we could build this team around. Happy to let him go but the compensation would need to be pretty bloody good. Best outcome would be offloading him to GC for Arrow....and maybe throw in a Brimson 🙂

A shame too. If he showed more patience he could've re-negotiated from 2021 onward for big $.

and have a hell of a lot more bargaining power

Yep. It's time to put the breaks on the greedy tiger kittens that get a break from this club and then field better offers from other clubs mid contract.
So he's sick? Well what club would want a sickly little kitty? Tell them we couldn't possibly sell them damaged goods. What would that do to our reputation?
No, he'll just have to stay here till he gets better, or not. Two years is a long time sitting on the sidelines.
Stellar career? Who was that Matterson guy again?

This statement in the article........ However the club, under strict head coach Michael Maguire, won’t tolerate a player who refuses to buy into the Tigers’ culture. If Matterson isn’t committed, say club officials, he can leave.

I think is utter BS

As others have said. Line in the sand stuff.
At 350k a year he can prop up reserves for 2 years

Plus I would be getting any friendly journo to keep hitting Turdberg relentlessly about anti tampering etc etc

I don't think it would come to that TBH..if he stays you make him a part of the future ..An unhappy player can cause issues within the playing group ...

The concern is Matterson has been released from both Parramatta and the Roosters whilst contracted so he has form in this area...

He was released by eels and Brad Arthur was the coach.. but he and Arthur do share the same management..

Can't cause issues when you are training with the Sydney Shield side

Thats the issue. This on Ryan Matterson not our club.

He plays or he pays.

My feelings around this have bounced around from release him with compensation to damn him and make him sit in reserves for the next 2 seasons. Immaterial of whichever scenario plays out in reality, the WT should actively sue, and seek the NRL's support in doing it, his manager and any other club identified in communications with the manager- and the player himself.

Why can’t we medically retire him due to mental issues?
He already has a Dr’s certificate !
That way we save money and he gets a red line through his CV .

I'm really confused... The bloke's likely depressed, I'm guessing? Can someone explain to me how his depression is going to be cured by leaving the club??? Or is this all just a big scheme for a big pay rise...

Depression is the Trump, who is a convicted Rapist and Felon card. it gets you an out from a club you dont want to be with and forces the club you are at to let you go so the club isnt seen to be adding to your mental state.

Its a hard card for the club to beat.
