It’s common place for clubs to upgrade the contracts of players. It’s usually done by upgrading the final year with an extension.

Matterson was a depth/fringe/utility at the Roosters, who spent a large portion of their premiership season on the sideline. He had a breakout final series coming off the bench when he returned.

His form continued and this season at the Wests Tigers was his best ever, and the rugby league community has taken notice.

He might be feeling morose witnessing his former club and teammates putting together another tilt at the title. But he may never of reached the same heights he did this year if he’d stayed at the Roosters and continued to be a depth/bench player and would have been on even less coin.

My advice to Ryan would be to put your head down, work hard and buy into what Madge is doing - the money and rewards will soon follow.

Have a read of this one

Suggest Ryan does not want the tigers money and did not sign up for Madge hard approach to footy and wants back at a Ivan, Kelly softer approach to footy.

Also mention he considered himself a half at partamatta🙄

Journalists like Buzz and Hoops are notorious for exaggeration and misrepresentation, they publish stories and push out statements based on their ‘mail’ and ‘hear say’ from undisclosed sources - they’re headline seeking, rugby league shock jocks, and there is a appetite for that.

However where there’s smoke, there’s usually fire, but there needs to be some sensible perspective on these matters as it’s usually not an out-of-control astonishing soaring roaring fire, but just some vaping going on, or someone lighting farts so to speak. :dash: :fire:

The story first surfaced from Michael Chammas on the NRL website and one other more creditable source before Hooper & Slothfield jumped on the bandwagon, so their stories have hardly shocked anyone. I usually take what those two say/write with a grain of salt, but the fact that this has come from those other more reliable sources first makes me think it could be true, even despite what Madge said last night.

How do this sound? Major teams with gaps in their second row roster. They cannot be filled with the players on the market. Therefore, a manager commences a campaign of destabilisation to get his client free of his current contract for a big earner with a new (or old club) plus a healthy commission (on top of what he perhaps has received to run this campaign).

Very likely. Also, a player joins a club assuming a certain level of professionism. Finds out the place is a disaster and wants to leave.

Have you noticed the ex tigers playing in every semi this week? Every game!!
So many that you start to think it's us, not them thats the problem.

Hit the nail on the head there mate:+1:

Personally I think that this is a pessimistic and unrealistic viewpoint. I consider these type of opinions slander. There are no facts just a blanket we are so bad.

Who really complains about this stuff. The only one I know about is Bwaith.

They don't complain, they just leave.

Does it make any factual sense though ? I mean we've been through multiple coaches and rotated the staff a fair bit. Is it voodoo magic or something else ?

Just a purely run club IMO.

A bit like Ivan - Ryan hasn't denied it. Don't see the value in making him play if he is not committed and at the same time don't see the value in letting him play for someone else.
Contracts are a joke and managers/players know it. They always get paid, and clubs jump hoops to try and keep them happy. They will suck all the money out of the game.

Clean and innocent

This story is really starting to 💩 me. Boohoo if youre not happy Ryan. Get over it and do what you signed up to do. I wish NRL contracts were performance based, if your underperforming (on and off the field) your earnings may suffer or if you don't like your club and have X amount of years left, go get a real job and scrap your X amount of $$ until your contract runs out. $350000 to play in the NRL doesn't sound bad to me. Stop holding clubs to ransom and being careless towards your fans because if it weren't for us, all NRL clubs would be park footy teams playing for sausage sangas.

Hmmm this story, if true, is really disappointing. Sadly Ryan is beginning to sound a bit like a perennial whinger when things don’t go exactly the way he wants them to. Despite Madge’s best efforts to increase his earnings, improve his game and elevate him to Origin level he is still not happy Jan! Sounds like a spoilt brat to me and we don’t need anymore of those that’s for sure, having already rid ourselves of a few over the past couple of years.

Of course, I don’t know the real story behind it all, but something is obviously not right. I had a high opinion of Matterson as a player and a man, but I’m starting to think he may not really be the ethical, hard working good guy I thought he was.

Well said ..... I thinks that Cronulla will be the next back page story in coming weeks. I think they and Manly are in tight squeeze.

Yes he (or more probably his agent) are doing him a disservice. Saw Madge last night on Matty Johns show and when Matts was mentioned his demeanour changed .... his hands became rather tense and he looked to me as wanting to tear some strips off someone.
If it’s Matterson who is driving this I think he will end up in Packer basket.

Ah Yeees right!! As you can see Ryan is really hating his time with the Tigers and Madge..

100% i can see the hatred oozing out of him

Without doubt the Matterson thing has legs and it’s not only about money, although it would be a factor.

Reading all the articles, some buy jurnos with solid reputations and others who are just hacks, are all beating the same drum and Madge certainly looked on edge when asked about the situation.

Okay what do you do, force him to stay at 350 a year, give him a upgrade or let him walk. One things for certain very few players are ever forced to stay at a club against their wishes.

I would be looking at a trade and not a 350g trade but a market value trade. In other words we get a player for about 500g with the other club picking up the 150g difference.

Anyway if I was a betting man I would say he is short odds to be leaving and that really bugs me and questions have to be asked

If Matto wants out, because he's not happy, then I say we sit him tight and he sits in Reserve Grade for 2 years. What's $350k? Nothing, we have over $1m easy sitting down there in Packer, formerly Reynolds, and so on.

Our image here is the most important thing, so the club needs to stand strong and not be pushed around.

Ryan Matterson 2019.

1) Became a regular, starting first grader
2) Doubled his 2018 salary
3) 18th Man in SOO.
4) Statistically had a great year.

Is unhappy as he didn't get what he signed up for with Iv and Kelly.

Id love to know what he was promised by Ivan that is above and beyond what he achieved under Madge.. Fair Dinkum....

Oh No..not the dreaded body language again..

This is what happens when you continually remove or lose coaches .....happy footballers become unhappy footballers when the style of coaching and training changes

I can understand Matterson's view totally , he needs to be able to show off his ball skills and running game to make the next step ....because of our deficiencies he needs to play a total power game ...which isn't going to benefit his career long term
