We can't afford to lose Matterson.
How good's this for a Back-row:
- Garner
- Matterson
- Arrow (Hopefully)
Now that I wouldn't mind.
He has been our most consistent performer all year and we can't afford to lose him, and he's only on 350k? He should be around 750k.
Madge, do your thing.

Its makes you wonder that a player who was surplus to requirements at the RORTERS and was given an opportunity to play regular first grade then (if its true)
wants to start rocking the boat is worth keeping because it will get to a situation where the lunatics are running the Asylum which I believe is the current situation at the Donkeys Matto should be head down and bum up for at present he's a good first grader with potential as yet not representative material and should be putting all his energies into season 2020 then he can start looking for an upgrade.

Plenty of people have suggested that Matto might have been put out when Brooksy won the Kelly-Barnes award. I'm thinking the other way: The club got wind of his antics and decided to lessen the embarrassment by making sure he didn't win.

Reckon that Brooks just shaded him myself and that is taking nothing away from Matterson, who shone from his first match with us.

If I recall correctly, someone posted during the live count that he was already ahead by one point at round 17, when things were likely more rosy with Ryan, so doubt that there was any shenanigans.

I reckon Brooks would have only overtaken Matto toward the end of the season.
Brooks went to another level once Liddle and Farah both got injured, whereas Matto's form actually dropped off a little... which is starting to make sense to me now.

Agreed, and I wrote similarly in the best/most improved player thread.

Was mainly pointing out that Brooks was always up there in the tally and whilst Ryan continued to get wraps on here, it was more so as part of the 'honeymoon' effect for mine, and similarly with Twal last year.

The real reason Matterson wants to leave the Tigers
So I have done some digging - and found out the REAL story behind Ryan Matterson and his fallout with the Wests Tigers … and it has nothing to do with money as some would have you believe.

Matterson is angry because he feels Tigers coach Michael Maguire pressured him to play in pain several times during the season, preventing him from playing at his best.

Maguire is a tough taskmaster who demands excellence from his players - it’s a trait he learned from his early days in the Melbourne system under the ruthless Craig Bellamy.

Matterson complained to Maguire several times during the long season that just ended that his body needed a break - but Maguire pushed him to keep playing.

Matterson sucked it up and played wounded - but now the season is over, he wants out.

He has two years to go on his Tigers contract - but the club is sticking to its guns and refusing to release him… for the moment.

Every player plays with some sort of pain or discomfort and most can get by I find it hard to believe Madge would make this call on his own there would have to be input from the physio's and medical staff

@Anon-lurker lol surely that can be sorted out by Madge saying sorry bud didn’t realise you were in that much pain. I’ll know your serious come next year...fullstop story closed

Pretty much what I've, been hearing, its nothing to do with money, oh the poor dear, suck it up you big skirt....do we really need a sook like him at the tigers.....old heads like stopper lavers and blocker would be blown away by this

@Elderslie_Tiger whilst I agree with you , all players tend to play injured , it just makes me think that Madge has a poor record with injured players , I think about how he let Inglis continue playing with the one shoulder against the tigers in his last season at Souths

@Anon-lurker I trust Madge's judgement however he does have some form in selecting injured players.
Whilst at Souths he apparently played GI despite being injured. It didn't go down too well.

At least with releasing Cleary 2 years early we got something out of it. Penrith paid a kings ransom and pretty much paid Maguire's salary. Because he isn't on a lot, releasing Matterson would be something we get nothing out of. For that reason we need to stick to our guns.

And Robbie Farah played with a broken leg. Say what you will about Farah's ego, but the bloke would at least do anything to try and help his team win.

I thought it read, $425k in season 3 not next year, $350k first 2 years
