Have to question what options Matterson leaves himself with

Left Parramatta because he fell out with Arthur
Left Roosters because he didn't want to play the position the coach wanted him to play
Leaving Tigers because he has fallen out with the coach

4th club at 24 and likely going to the wooden spooners - not good career moves on his behalf and doesen't look like someone other clubs want to sign or Origin coaches will want to pick

The bloke is a damn good footballer ......and he is likely to be at his 4th club by his 25th birthday

Left his 1st club Parra because they wouldn't do what he wanted ......left the Roosters because the club wouldn't play him the way he wanted , wants to leave us now because the coach isn't doing what he wants

What does Dr Phil say about predicting future behaviour based on past behaviour

His past says the minute he isn't happy he wants out , someone said the Roosters don't lose players they want to keep

Maybe the writing was on the wall before the club signed him ......

I blame the club as much I do Matterson ....Matterson is Matterson ....and the Wests Tigers are the WT's ......more often than not find a way to turn a certain victory into defeat

My other point is some on here never ever find the club at fault no matter what happens ....its always refs, media ,players ,NRL .....some need to admit quite often the biggest cause of problems at the WT's is the WT's

The NRL needs rules around this contract game.

They should create a standard, player initiated, contract release policy...Players can be granted a release in exchange for a 20% transfer fee of the new contract value for the remainder of the existing contract.

For example, Matterson has 2 years left. If he gets a $2.8 million, 4 year deal, we would be entitled to 20% of 2 years worth of the deal. That’s a $560k fee. It not only compensates the club to help them pick up another player, but it also covers the shenanigans and derailment that comes with a player moving on during a contract.

If teams want to raid players, it means either the players salary offer will be reduced by the transfer fee or that club will have to stump up cash. It’s up to the player and their new club to decide.

Gus Gould has it right. If a player wants to leave, don’t stand in their way. There’s absolutely no point.

If it’s about money alone, let’s talk and see if we can come to an agreement. If it’s about anything else, we are unlikely to be able to make the player happy, so just let them go.

Clubs that produce or identify juniors will be able to gain a windfall if other clubs decide to buy those players.

If a club wants to move a player on, then the normal rules apply where their salary is guaranteed even if they earn less at another club.

No, that's a $280k fee. The idea is good, but not the math.

So we need to ask the question, is the Wests Tigers environment one that encourages players to stay here?
Would people take unders to play with us?
Why did we loose JAC and Ryan Papenhuyzen to the STORM?

Happy for the greedy to go elsewhere. But as a club what do we have wrong in our facilities and culture?
We cannot fix the salary cap. Maybe we can work out TPD's better, hey we have Barry Ofarrell* on our board! Yet I am sure our board has tried this.
What we haven't tried is taking a good hard look at ourselves and going 'how can we be a club that players will want to play at? How could we be a club that signs a player for 50K under because they like our culture and believe their football can grow.' That's the question we need to answer. Else we will loose the next Matterson.

Nah mate, he's right...I mentioned in my post 20% of the remaining contract years...

The whole contract is worth $2.8 million over 4 years, so $1.4 million over 2 years is $280k.

I mistakenly calculated it over the 4 years.

Either way, the NRL can come up with what they think is fair upon consulting the clubs and stakeholders, but I reckon it would cut out a few of these dramas the NRL is having.

Probably need to put some rules around it by saying the new contract must be X% higher than their existing contract to activate the clause so raiding clubs don't low ball the first contract only to significantly bump the contract in later years to save on the transfer fee.

Well Benji and Robbie played for unders this year and Lawrence is happy to go around for $150k next year....Brooks is on $550k I believe...

The reality of our situation is that we have most of our big money tied up in non-performing players.

If we start making the finals consistently, players will come.
