@Madge Good Mats, I wish you all the best in your retirement and congrats on a great career. Bad Mats, I hope you never win a GF or play rep football you scumbag.

Just wait and see what happens on the Matterson front rather than just assuming the worst immediately off the back of James Hooper's word...

Yeah I doubt we just let him go.

Releasing Matterson immediately to me would comprise of having let him go when he approached the club initially. Poor journalism on FauxSports part.

@WT2K don’t worry, 100% we’ll be making some signing in place, we will come on top of this situation just like we did with Ivan the pest

No doubt. Will wait for official confirmation instead of going off of Hooper's word.

Poor outcome on the matterson front. Letting him get what he wanted with nothing coming back our way.

Good outcome on the Matulino situation.

You guys do realise that today is 31/10/19 dont you? Which is the day before 01/11/19.

What makes you so sure that we arent receiving something for him? Club said they wouldnt let him go without a good result for the club, Im confident we are getting something for him.

Who was that Parramata prop and ex-Parra captain we nearly signed this year?

No doubt the club has something brewing for recruitment that they need to have the funds for.

If 'letting him go' without a favourable trade or similar means that we get a good signing over the line, I guess it needed to be done.

TBH from the publicly available articles I cannot see any club trading a bigger value player for Matterson. Similar value ok and that was what was being floated. Releasing him fine, get rid of the bloke- like in the services many years ago- 'lack of moral fibre............'

Having said that, it was POM I think that clearly fingered Parra as the background club egging this thing on or possibly even starting it. I cant fully recall, but if WT have some form of proof that Parra approached a contracted player from another club and encouraged them (or his agent) to break their contract and use spurious 'evidence' such as mental health, just like Moses did in getting his release to Parra, WT should take Parra and his agent to NRL / Court seeking penalties.

Your sort of jumping the gun there mate.

@momo_amp_medo Matterson, unhappy at Eels, Roosters, Tigers and apparently now happy at Eels, does that mean we get him back in a couple years lol ?

@barra let’s see how this pans out , I am more positive and heartened with the news of a decent windfall for recruitment next season.
There has to be a silver lining regarding the realise immediately of Matterson good riddance you grub!

**Ben Matulino announces retirement**

Thu 31 Oct 2019, 04:59 PM

https://www.weststigers.com.au/news/2019/10/31/ben-matulino-announces-retirement/

Wests Tigers forward Ben Matulino has today confirmed his retirement from rugby league following an exceptional career that has spanned the past 12 seasons.

Matulino will medically retire as approved by the NRL from rugby league with 248 appearances to his name having made his first-grade debut for the New Zealand Warriors back in Round 14 of the 2008 season.

The first NYC graduate from all 16 clubs to achieve the milestone of 100 and then 150 NRL games, Matulino would go on to feature in 212 appearances all up for the Warriors — twice winning the club’s Player of the Year Award in 2012 and 2015.

Joining Wests Tigers at the start of the 2018 season, Matulino would play 23 of a possible 24 matches in his first season with the club and featured in the first 13 games of the 2019 season before suffering a knee injury against the North Queensland Cowboys in Round 14.

The serious injury would rule the 30-year-old for the remainder of the season.

Wests Tigers CEO Justin Pascoe paid tribute to Matulino’s career.

“On behalf of all at the club, I’d like to firstly congratulate Ben on what has been a superb career in the NRL,” Pascoe said. “He has been a wonderful player for over a decade and has continued to give his all for his sport, teammates and clubs.

“Ben is a terrific family man and it has been a real pleasure to have him be part of this club.

“We all understand his decision to retire as a result of his injury, and we wish him, his wife Courtenay and his young family all the very best in the future.”

A Te Aroha Eels junior, Matulino made his international debut for New Zealand as part of the 2009 Four Nations and would play a vital role in the Kiwis’ success at the turn of the decade — helping his side to a breakthrough win over Australia in the 2010 Four Nations.

He would go on to play 23 Tests all up for the Kiwis between 2009 and 2015.

Current New Zealand Kiwis and Wests Tigers Coach Michael Maguire thanked Matulino for his contribution to both Wests Tigers and the Kiwis national side.

“Ben has been a pleasure to coach and has played a key role in helping us set the culture that we want at Wests Tigers,” Maguire said.

“He sets a great example for the younger players in the squad and has always displayed a team-first attitude both on and off the field.

“In the international space, Ben has also had a wonderful representative career and has played a key role in the progress of New Zealand rugby league," he said.

"His efforts for the Kiwi jersey are thoroughly appreciated by all and we wish him well in the future.”

**In addition to Matulino’s retirement, Wests Tigers have also confirmed that Ryan Matterson will depart the club effective immediately after being released from the final two years of his playing contract. Matterson has played 24 games for Wests Tigers after joining the club at the start of the 2019 season.**

we didn't get anything for Matterson but My feeling is we have something else up our sleeve... we don't want to do a player swap just for the sake of it and waste more money on someone we don't actually need.. Gut just says we released him as the money will be used for another player from a club that may not want him.. :hand_with_index_and_middle_fingers_crossed:

It says we have released him, no comment on what we got to let him walk. The next announcement should be interesting. Also, I’m chuffed that the only mention of him is in the footnotes to an article about a WT player who had integrity. Jog on expletive expletive.

You forgot to start that statement with “IF” unless you know something we all are not aware of?
