The realisation is we all will to have leave our homes / go to work and open our boarders and live with this virus ! Many are going to die ...as locking ourselves away is only going prolong this virus for years and our country and others will not be able to with stand the financial burden . Until there is some sought of vaccine we are just going to have to deal with it and our lives will never be the same .... unfortunately the older generation which I am included will be most in harms way but we will have to accept this fact ! The WHO has released data pointing to around 99% of the infected will survive .

How old are you Snake?

Old enough to know you are going to have to come out from hiding sooner or later and get on with your life as this is not going away. Maybe you should read some history books or are you the type that pulls statues down ... man kind has a very high tolerance to acceptable outcomes as history has shown . Oh that’s right we now have to forget history happened !

Nobody is asking for history to be rewritten or changed it is just that the people who had statues erected for them didnt deserve it.

So you pull them down. What about books you find offensive - just burn them. How about the moron who wanted to pull down the statue of Henry Lawson thinking he was the Lawson who crossed the Blue Mountains. These clowns want to change history but they can't even get the right history.

I am not suggesting you change history at all. Just dont glorify men who stole other peoples countries population or wealth just to make the tin pot country they came from more powerful.I would never burn a book even if i found it disgusting because people are entitled to their opinions.Would you be happy with a statue of Hitler/Stalin/Tojo/Mao Tse Tung i know i wouldnt be if i saw one because it glorifies them
Moderators please remove my comment to the politics thread as it is more appropriate there

Stats stats and more stats. Let’s look at this another way. I predicted at the beginning that the USA will have 100million infected by Christmas. I’ve seen nothing to change my mind. That’s 1 Million dead. Is that acceptable, to just get on with it?

Yes that’s an acceptable number when you have a population over 800 million and a way of eradicating the virus over 700 thousand died in the US with the Spanish flue alone! Countries in the EU are doing just this and will deal with the deaths to save there sovereignty and economy’s .

So if we extrapolate your argument you are saying that with a population of the planet of approx 7.5billion and if we assume only half of the population get the virus 3.75billion then 37.5million dead is OK. If the entire population of the planet gets the virus then that’s 75million dead. That’s still OK?

Indonesia is playing this game as we speak .. Bali open for business.. did not realise that the Indonesia’s had found a vaccine ! What’s there population ? The acceptable level to survive ..

Yeah, lets follow Indonesia's example, or if as you said we shouldn't forget history and what has been acceptable to the the human race, lets sacrifice some people to the gods and maybe they will take this curse a way.

Time changes values and societies are different, the advance medical care we have now has resulted in a higher value being placed on life. That is why we have things like very strict WHS laws now where in the past people dying while building major projects was acceptable. A lot of people also don't believe in the fairytales of religion meaning their is no afterlife to soften the blow of the loss of a loved one.

Just because the human race as accepted high death tolls before does not mean we have to now.

I feel October 1 will be a defining moment of reflection when most of the subsidies are stopped ! .We are living in a very unrealistic situation at the moment , while the government are paying this huge welfare bill ATM and banks are forgoing mortgages this she’ll be right attitude is rife ! You might think I am crazy thinking this way but the bottom line is we as a population are going to have to live with this virus and accept the mortality rate as we have to live and pay our bills .. if there is another way other than a far distant vaccine please have your say ! We can not be locked out of the world for to much longer like it or not ..

No, I'm not one of those pull statues down types. I'm also pretty well read.

I ask how old you are as I'm interested to know whether you're at greater chance of being a statistic or not, so while we're making inferences about others I would like to know if you've ever been seriously ill in your life or if you're one of those "it won't affect me so let's get on with it" types...

You make an interesting point.

If a vaccine becomes available in a relatively short period (i.e. some time during 2021) then the sacrifices made to save many lives will have been worthwhile. Those sacrifices are probably worthwhile anyway:
(a) because we have to act with some optimism from the very start
(b) because they've bought us time to prepare a better medical response
(c) because they've given us time to test and approve treatments to relieve the symptoms of Covid 19

My generation has been really blessed to have lived through a time where disease has not had a major impact. Just one generation before us, people were dying from TB, children were dying from or being crippled by polio. A generation before that, infant mortality rates were at a level that would be inconceivable in our society.

If no vaccine becomes available then the time will come when we can no longer afford to live our lives in total or even partial shutdown. At that stage we will have to accept that we are living with a disease in our community that is going to take some lives.

I hope it doesn't come to that but at some stage our governments may have to make that tough decision and re-open the economy to a greater extent than it currently is.

For a start it’s unlikely the subsidies will stop cold on October 1. More likely a fade out. We’ll know more by the end of the month.

Secondly the banks are not forgoing anything and this is what is really annoying about that narrative. They are deferring payments or tying to get people into interest only or longer term loans. These scumbags wouldn’t save their mothers if it was a choice about being paid or not being paid.

The let’s just get it over with and expose everyone will be a disaster. This is what England try todo but backtracked to late and now they are paying for it. Sweden is turning out to be an example of what not to do. Vietnam led the way on what todo as they have been through this before with SARS etc, close your boarders and physical distance ASAP.

Sure we have to open up business but it needs to be done in a manner that also protects people in the process, not just allow unabated spread of the disease. I am old enough to remember what it was like going to school and wondering which one of your friends would not make it back next semester because of polio, measles (yes measles kills) whooping cough, or any number of other illnesses and I certainly don’t want to go back to that. While there is no vaccine for Covid19, every decision made will have major consequences for the health of population. There are also the forgotten that are not easily identified in the stats and it is those that have not died but those that will have long term health issues as a result of being exposed to Covid19.

History tells us that the current pandemic won’t last forever, but it also tells us that recklessly and blindly exposing populations unnecessarily has dire consequences for not only the people exposed but for the world as a whole. Opening up needs to be in a very controlled and considered manner.

Not so sure about that Mike. All other coronaviruses persist and havent been eradicated. The 1918 Spanish Flu was H1N1 flu and there have been a few of these that have come and gone, but most coronaviruses persist and Idont think there are vaccines for any coronvirus to date.

The pandemic will end, either we control the outbreaks and control the spread, or it just kills all that are going to be killed. Vaccine or no vaccine the pandemic will end.

Not necesarily. As I said previously, other coronavirus persist year after year and based on that immunity is temporary. Therefore that would mean that the entire worlds population could get it, and after time catch it time and time again without lasting immunity. One infestation may be harmless, asymptomatic and another very serious.

The virus itself will most likely be here forever. That’s not what I am saying, the Pandemic itself will end.

FG, why exactly is it a "convenient narrative for some to push"? Can you please expand on *exactly* what that narrative is and please nominate who here is "pushing" that narrative?

@formerguest? Care to elaborate?

No need to when my post had already been replied to by Tom, Dick and Mr Grant, plus you have now doubled down on it since.

Ok so you have clarified that it was directed at me. Coward. Gutless coward.

After you quoting the same post consecutively and still feeling frustrated, I can clarify that your outbursts have me worried about you feeling a bit inadequate. Though that's okay, I understand that can happen and some even feel the need to argue matters for pages on end to make up for it.

Please don't get down on yourself over it, as I will be on the lookout for a keyboard warrior medal to help you feel all better.

FG, you and I have had differences of opinion, particularly in the politics thread and our political views are clearly different. I have never had a problem with that, it takes all walks of life to form a society and you are entitled to your political views as am I and we are both entitled to express them. Id like to think that up until know we have both been able to agree to disagree respectfully.

This is a totally different matter. You cant make a veiled allegation as you did and then when asked not clarify or further explain it. It leaves a dark implication. I can only take your reluctance to address it or clarify it as intentional as you want to leave the implication there.

I think this is disgusting and complete cowardice on your part not to clarify your remark.

What narrative is it that you think I am pushing and why do you say it is convenient?

Took a break from the medal search this morning to take my ticking more and more of the boxes by the day son and myself to get tested for the virus at the Wyong hospital Covid 19 clinic. Whilst in the line, one of a pair of guys in front was on the phone and talking about being there because he had been at the Crossroads hotel and developed a cough and sore throat.

A little while later when sitting awaiting the pre test interview, the guy adjacent to us also answered that he had been to the Crossroads, which is now one of their standard questions, though he was asymptomatic. I made a comment about having heard both of them during my interview and whilst not given numbers, was told that there had already been a "hell of a lot" through both yesterday and this morning.

Showed directly to me just how easily it could spread across regions, with many here in the northern Central Coast getting testing after visiting an indoor venue such as this pub in South West Sydney.

Good point Former. Many of those getting tested would have a reason to do so, I imagine.

Border should have been closed earlier.

Those 6 Victorians caught lying to Qld Police and fined $4k each highlights the fact significant penalties need to be in place.

Surprised the Crossroads has never been that popular..

Not sure, as I didn't even know the name until they alluded to it this morning, only that there was a problem with a Casula pub. All I can add to it is that of maybe twenty people max that we saw during our testing visit, at least two separate individuals had been there last week.

Good to know the Eastern Suburbs Rugby Club are now being investigated for lack of social distancing. The photograph in the SMH online reveals all.

It's popular with Victorians. Kerry Chant was attempting to be discrete but the source of the infection appears to be known although further tests will confirm that. Selfish people who don't put safety first .

Star city / Canterbury leagues / other pubs well the time is upon us the leaders of the country will
need to make the decision... do we live with it or bankrupt the nation for generations .. The PM is in a no win position either way ! You can not control this with a population of people that have no regard for there fellow citizens...publicans and business owners skirting the laws in place for a quick buck!
