Sigh, people suck. I have never understood how a society is supposed to function harmoniously where the individual is conditioned to look after themself first and foremost at the expense of others. Stupid concept.

What surprises me is that we are surprised by this stupidity

I know I will sound like and old fogey, but I have been saying for some time now the view that Aussie's are laid back, open to a fair go and selfless is one of the most overblown lies going around

For years now common courtesy on the roads, to the elderly, to teachers and others in the usual positions of respect is now long gone.
The Oz I grew up in is hardly recognisable IMHO

Global concerns. Generational changes.

We’re no less high and mighty than you may feel at some point in your life - just a different climax... think it’s a bit of a pot shot labelling all youths, learners and assistants as lacking respect, courtesy and patience pretty much. IMHO, we’re coming out on top, slowly

And that’s no thanks to any Govt. aid

I didn't interpret that as aimed at only youths, on the road every work day I see drivers with no courtesy for others. Young, old, male, female drivers.

This corona is getting serious. The gov needs to be bring in very tough penalties for hoarding now. Saying 'naughty naughty' doesn't work. They need to take it seriously, it's their job to lead this country, not look after themselves and their own financial interests.

Put some police at the supermarkets. Make the government office workers work from home where they can. I understand closing schools will deplete the workforce, (estimated at depleting the health workers workforce by 30% due to child minding tasks) which they really don't want to do unless they have to, fair enough. But there's a lot more they can do which they aren't.

As a society, the fear and panic is rising, I don't know if we can do this for another year??

Couldn’t have said it any better myself. The ‘extended peak’ will hopefully prevent a full blown market crash and any future stimulus will need to come at a time that is sustainable for govt, otherwise of course, the standard of living we’re so accustomed to may become unattainable.

For example, the Centrelink one-off payment rolling out next week will/should definitely help the at risk citizens in our society - but won’t make a damn difference if people continue panicking.

I saw the post itself as somewhat condescending and just wanted to mark it as not pertaining to (I’d hope a majority of this forum) lots of the folks I choose to spend time with in real life! Whether they be gay, straight, white or black.

To be honest, people are doing what they think is right by stocking up.

In the absence of any real action by the government, this makes people feel like they're doing something to protect their family.

Fear and emotion always wins over logic.

Law of the jungle guys ! only the strong will survive the weak and frail can please themselves ..unfortunately human kind will always revert back to its primitive roots when in situations like this ! That’s the way it is ..

I have to say it is not so much the Government but the Media morons that can not help themselves blowing everything out of proportion... l was listening to Alan Jones on a job yesterday and to be frank he is the only commentator that I have heard who is putting this all into perspective !
We want free press we’ll this is what we get totally irresponsible journalism creating the panic !

Alan Jones missed the memo from all the other shock jocks who are no longer pushing the "hysteria" line.

Even Trump, who is a convicted Rapist and Felon has changed his tone and declared a National Emergency.

Yep, not surprising at all. Maybe that’s what we should really be focusing on out of this?

Hopefully that day is allowed to come

That’s gold... lmao

I never thought that I would see so many stupid people panic buying, especially in Bathurst.
We have seen mini busses bringing shoppers from the metropolitan area to shop here.
Only problem is that all the silly locals have emptied all the shelves before they got here.

but the Chinese government should be slammed for trying to keep a lid on their doctors during the initial outbreak. Given the carnage this has and will cause, people have every right to be angry about it.
It was incredibly irresponsible of them if nothing else and now the rest of us have to pay the bill.

I think most people agree with you in terms of China handling the outbreak poorly. They aren't alone. Most countries reacted poorly and most did not have the experience with SARS and MERS that have assisted some Asian countries in responding more rapidly. Some Asian countries also have cultural advantages about "taking orders" and consideration of others, respect for elders etc., which can help curb hoarding, help increase compliance.

I think most Australians can easily separate between the Chinese people, including Chinese-Australians, and China as a Communist Power.

I certainly don't trust the Chinese government when it comes to dealing with Australian interests, and why should I? They have shown great self-interested and, at times, deceit for the past 20 years. I don't like the way they try to police their own people. I do not think that China is as worried about the ROW as it is worried about itself. They are not even a legitimate Communist regime, because of the disparity between the haves and have-nots. China is basically run by Capitalist Socialist Ideologists.

That all being said, all the criticism in the world is probably going to have no impact whatsoever on the Chinese Authorities. They don't listen to Westerners as it is. There will be a huge reckoning in 1-2 years from now, when the pandemic has come under control and every government goes back to try and learn from the lessons observed. Italy will overhaul it's hospital and aged-care systems. The EU will reconsider its border strategies given how quickly the virus exploded there. Basically every Western school in the world will need to implement a permanent learn-from-home strategy that can be implemented in times of crisis.

The Chinese? They'll do something or other to try and show the world they have learned from corona, because that's now 2 viral pandemics (SARS and COVID-19) that have emerged from China. They may ban wet markets and reduce live-food trade. They have the ability to very aggressively police anything they choose to. There will be high global political pressure on those wet markets and other Chinese wildlife practices. Perhaps the Chinese population itself will be spooked and avoid those markets, in much the same way that the British recoiled from beef during mad cow, or the way that most Japanese don't seek whale meat any more.

Can't disagree my friend. Hope you're doing well.

Disgusting scenes today. I’ve gone into Coles for bits and pieces the last couple weeks, but today was my first proper shop. Barely any meat, pasta and noodles ha good luck. Stood at the checkout for 30 minutes. I wasn’t hoarding or panic buying, just doing my regular shop.

We did a lesser weekly shop and we went to Coles and not Aldi. The same thing happened to us.

We tried Aldi first. Drove in and drove out. Bumper to bumper. Pretty much on opening time.

If you're short on TP, I purchased a a few boxes of 48 for the office before all this happened. Have a couple of packets of pasta I can throw your way too? No cost. Genuine offer.
