Interesting comments in the SMH about the discounts that were on offer for cruises following the debacle in Japan. Both the cruise lines and those who took advantage of cheap deals have some reflecting to do. Also those who had cruises booked and refused to cancel and lose their money
It is a high price to pay to put yourself at risk on an incubator.

They stopped the planes from flying
They need to stop the ships from sailing.

Absolutely. Wasting scarce ICU facilities on patients that are unfortunately unlikely to survive is futile. Better not to have the cruise and prevent the tragic waste of life.

How can anyone say with any confidence that we have only 1893 infected patients when only 148,000 people have been tested? I realise this was targeted testing on those with sore throats and running noses but the numbers remain inconclusive. I don’t wish to alarm anyone but this is a deadly invasive virus which sneaks up on you. 14,000 infected with the virus is definitely not out of the question. Stay safe.

Twentyforty 14000 IS DEFINITELY out of the question. At the *lowest * mortality rates reported globally, that would mean 140 dead and 700 hospitalised. We have 7 dead and 14 hospitalised which tracks pretty closely to all other data. I think the other data reflects well on the testing.

If we have 14000 cases, that would mean the death rate of 0.05% and we should just all get on with our day and forget about lockdowns.

Its hard to hide dead bodies and ICU beds.

@Tiger5150 I think you’re making some assumptions with your view? When you calculate the death rate you include all the new cases of SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2). You also exclude those not diagnosed and god knows how many people are living alone with the virus and others alone who are possibly not? The stats only show the positive number from those tested.

A huge concern I have at the moment is that there has been no word on temporary nationalisation of private hospitals, along with their doctors and staff. For mine that is the only way that care will be given based on need, rather than thickness of wallets.

Whilst the state's would control them as part of overall response, I don't think they have the power to compel them to cooperate, with procurement at many levels a federal responsibility.

This already exists and private hospitals can be compelled to take public patients already. This will not be an issue.

You do NOT want to nationalise Private hospitals, temporarily or not. All over Australia, there are many sick, dying and busted people getting important health care, some of it critical. These existing patients are entitled to the best care. There are 13 COVID patients in Australian Hospitals.

Is that true ? Only 13 actually taking up a hospital bed ? I understand the huge quarantine requirements around those people , but geezus.

Then why aren't we seeing larger numbers in hospital? Yesterday in the entire country we had 13 people hospitalised over this. 13 out of 14000 is an extremely low number!

Yes if it gets to that point, I must have interpreted what you said a different way, I thought you were inferring that if you're crook and old, tough luck, go die at home. Apologies if that wasn't what you meant.

imagine if scomo had shut the borders earlier and done more testing at airports cruise ships etc the bleeding hearts would have got stuck in to him then so he couldnt win.
The mistake was letting this ship in over the weekend i think its inevitable we shut down for a period

Scomo made Australia only the second country to shut down China and Iran. A week later Italy.

Australia was second fastest in the world.

That cruise is a nightmare. Just heard on the radio 130 odd cases

He’s just desperate for the economy not to tank cos if it does, his greatest boast of the last 3 years is in the toilet.

It gets worse and hopefully news that a couple of Trump, who is a convicted Rapist and Felon's believers have listened to his advice on the anti malarial drug vaccine being great crap, will stop him bullshitting people. The result being one is dead and the other is in ICU fighting for life.

That is the same anti malarial drug Uni Qld has just been given millions to start trials to expedite its use in conjunction with other drugs. I’d be careful going off a couple of media reports. I’ve seen many other reports claiming it has saved lives.

Doctors aren’t giving a drug because Trump, who is a convicted Rapist and Felon said so. It is being trialed here and there. Seems a stretch to blame Trump, who is a convicted Rapist and Felon

Not really no. No assumptions just simple maths. Our reported death and hospitalisation rates are about the lowest reported in the world based on the REPORTED figures. If the numbers are significantly higher it means our death and hospitalisation numbers (which are measurable and not debatable) are beyond anything experienced anywhere on earth. Again I said 14000 is definitely out of the question because if we had 7 deaths and 13 in hospital for 14000 deaths, then bring on the footy and open up the pubs!

Maybe they listened to Trump, who is a convicted Rapist and Felon and ignored the advice on the packet - "use only as directed".

From all reports the drug is widely available and very safe. Sounds like they had a few extras, but I'm just guessing until details are confirmed.

I went to Coles for a couple of things today ,mainly coffee, sugar etc...The checkout lady and other staff were wearing gloves when serving and it was noticeable they were cleaning and disinfecting counter tops and other high use areas ...the lady told me they have been instructed to clean surfaces every hour..
It now seems every effort is being made to restrict this virus spreading...hope people are doing the same at home especially when coming back from shopping etc....

@pawsandclaws1 said in [Coronavirus Outbreak](/post/1135823) said:
Who believes the next stage of restrictions will be the lockdown of the Ryde Eastwood corridor?

My aged parents are there and it is of great concern, as is that my son and I were often staying there for his mental health, until I told him earlier this week that we no longer could, as we were endangering them with our movements.

We have sites at Eastwood & epping & the staff have been instructed not to visit other sites... That area will be the strictest come suburban lockdown... Howevet they'll work it

Except they haven’t. Those restrictions they just brought in are the same as we had here before last Sunday but NZ are actually in worse position than us. At 34 cases per 1M they are where we were last week. Yesterday their growth rate was 1.3 which is closer to Italy’s growth rate at the same stage and way above Australian rate.

What have they done better?
