McGowan had to come down tough even after just the one case. There's no social distancing being practised here.

Are you in WA?

EDIT Stupid question....let me change it up, have you ever lived in NSW?

First 30 odd years of my life.

PLay junior cricket?

That's a weird q. Yes. My surname isn't Gallagher though

All good, a lot of your answers lined up and I thought I might have known you.

I've had a few pm's over the years about a Gallagher

Strong Irish name lol

Why is he a dropkick? For trying to protect the people of his State?

Shoots his mouth off advising NSW to take WA lead... Pot shots at any opportunity... He's much like that peanut up north... Only care about themselves while crapping on about "protecting their state"
Pffft

He's done a pretty good job in regards to the virus so far. Can't deny him that.

He does have the benefit of Perth being one of the most isolated cities in the world. How he deals with this outbreak will be telling.

He only knows one way, lock everything down.

It's not a bad theory when you have no border towns. Has it effected the other states negatively?

Except for those with family in Perth. Businesses, really only the Airline and tourist industry I suspect.

Except now it will effect almost all business in Perth.

I think tourism here is booming. It's near impossible to book anything . I work for myself and can't now for a week but hopefully short term pain.

I hope it’s only short term pain.

I do think the lockdown is a bit premature though, the person is in isolation. To me it shows a lack of faith in the tracing capabilities, to get everyone in close contact isolated and tested.

I guess the worry is it’s the more virulent strain and the possibility of it already in the community. What I don’t get is why the whole city and south West WA, and not just individual LGAs.

It’s like my LGA in Sydney, like most, hasn’t had a case since May 2020 but because a few LGAs in ‘Sydney’ has we have been locked out. I just think it could be more granular allowing most of the region to continue.

A surgical knife rather than a sledgehammer.

Yeah seems like overkill but state election in March has always played apart I reckon. His actions have been overwhelmingly supported so far. I could'nt even name the opposition leader off the top of my head

100% he has acted with the election at the front of his mind. Like you I couldn't name the leader of the opposition.
Think McGowan will win the election in a landslide due largely to his tough stance on the border issue. I can't think of anything else of note that he has done.

100%. He'll get my vote again. The opposition know they won't win by going after him one a covid issue.

Because he is premier of pretty much the most remote place on earth, with the lowest economic reliance on tourism in Aus and also complete dependence on an industry that is not impacted by COVID.......If you couldnt do a good job, you are in trouble.

Doesn't matter how remote you are though if you leave your borders open to all and sundry.
To that end he has done well IMO.

I don't agree with hard borders between states.

Me either. We are acting like 7 different countries at the moment. Not the Australia I know. The Premier’s have let power go to their heads.

I can understand restricting travel, especially for people in hotspots but border closures are not the country I know.

Victorians being stuck in NSW and not being allowed to return home is disgusting and an embarrassment to our country.

Lines like "Queensland hospitals are for Queenslanders" are thing I never though I would hear said in our country, let alone from a premier.

We should be supporting each other through this and it should never have been an us against them situation. I don't like Brad Hazzard but thought he answered it best when asked about Victoria's problems getting testing done in their latest mini outbreak. He answered that he wouldn't be drawn into bagging another states response but NSW would provide Victoria with any support they needed. That is how this whole situation should be handled.

There's been a lot of inconsistencies and grey areas but that was always going to be the case. Somewhere between unrestricted travel and total lockdown a line had to be drawn. I wouldn't like to be the one who decided where that line dropped, but it should have been at a national level.

I could not agree more. These little fiefdoms created will come back to haunt some of these Premier’s. I know I won’t forget the total disregard for humanity some have displayed.

Thing is, for mine the above conversation and similar only continue because the federal government failed to take control of quarantine from day dot and it has unnecessarily cost the country, lives, billions upon billions of dollars and things like ongoing state border issues.

There would long be no virus in the community if not brought in from overseas and they have had a whole year to sort this out, yet still failed to do so, despite having the facilities needing little upgrade ready to go. It is Scotty's hose and he should have been holding it!

Across the country we all could have enjoyed not having social distancing etcetera like you guys in the west for the best part of a year had it been handled appropriately with our almost ready to use quarantine bubbles.

However the virus is controlled between States: the main aim is control of some sort. Whoever are the beneficiaries is an insignificant issue.
Basically saying "it's un-Australian to close borders" is like saying "I've got something contagious but I love my family so I'm happy to share it with them so we are not isolated" in not so many words.

Covid-19 should never have been an individual states issue, the federal government have always been responsible for quarantine and border entry into Australia. We have just been very lucky that our location has saved us from the worst of it.All state leaders have made some mistakes but it should never have been their decision to make.
Federal government should have made all the decisions including individual area lockdowns.Scamo did not want to make unpopular decisions so he duck shoved it to the individual states no wonder it is a mess with 7 different people making 7 different rules(including NT).

598,389 more people vaccinated here in the last 24 hours.
Plus 10,621 second doses administered.
That’s 8,977,329 people who’ve received the first does of either the Pfizer (mRNA) or Oxford (viral vector) vaccines.

Still no unusual issues reported.

I’ll check the stats tomorrow in case anything changes.

...I'm starting to wonder if these YouTube "doctors" were wrong about the vaccine being unsafe.

The root of the problem is our commonwealth systems of states and territories. In this day and age of instant communication we don't need six states and two territories. We don't need 15 houses of parliament to govern 27 million people. Jobs for the boys (and girls).

I also would have preferred that state borders were not closed, but put yourself in a premier's position. In Vic, Dan is responsible for the health system and the health and well being of his community. If he sees an outbreak in Sydney and doesn't think that Gladys is going hard enough at shutting down the spread, what can he do? If travel from Sydney to regional NSW is still being allowed, what other levers are available for him to pull?

It's all well and good to say that, in hindsight, these decisions are unnecessarily tough. When the decisions are made those responsible for making them don't have the benefit of hindsight.

It's a crappy system so we all get crappy outcomes as a result.

My Hungarian mates condition has worsened. He has been in hospital for a couple of days, but he has got worse. He has bi-lateral pneumonia reducing his lung capacity to 20%. He is really struggling.

They havent put him on a respirator yet and they have moved him to some high dependency unit and are trying antiviral drugs on him. Not sounding good.
