Now the fiercest rivalry in cricket, the Ashes actually started as a bit of a joke.
In 1882, the British press lampooned its cricketers – so embarrassed were they to have been beaten by the upstart and unfancied Australians who came to their shores.
It was the first time England had been beaten by Australia at home, and the home fans did not take it well.
A mock obituary was written about the death of English cricket in the Sporting Times newspaper, with popular folklore suggesting that the bails used in the match had been burnt and placed in an urn.
They were brought to Australia on the following tour, and The Ashes were born.
Hence, why the urn – or a replica, at least – is handed to the winning team at the end of each series.
