CV & us.

We have lost a 5k deposit on a family event. They offered an outdoor function or for us to reduce or numbers but I said no.

Obviously I'm annoyed at the money, struggling with renos at the moment, but my overriding emotion is relief. My parents, grandparents, in-laws are all at risk and because I made a choice to lower their potential exposure I can still sleep at night.

Lots of people still underestimating this thing but I hope enough get it now.

Stay safe everyone, and thanks for starting this thread Ink. After this blows over I look forward to meeting my fellow forumites for a brew and a game

I was made redundant in December just in time for Christmas. No one responding to my job applications, so I decided to UBER for a while just to have some cash coming in. It might be a short career change. Partner works in retail, store manager. Store is still open but for how long? Circumstances means we are only able to live payday to payday and we rent. A shutdown will hurt us greatly but we’ll survive. I am assuming we will loose everything as a result of a shutdown but hopefully still be alive at the end so we can start again.

Thanks for sharing that Mike. There are so many people in this economy that are in a similar position and I worry for all of them, as despite us having our own issues over recent years, we still have a home, even if only about half the value of our former one, so a big weight is lifted.

Sadly, unless there is a decent lift in the rate of Newstart, a lot of our countrymen are about to find out just how inadequate many of them previously thought was an overly generous social security system. On the flipside of that, our circumstances had us receiving a partial FTB payment when we rented for a period between homes, the government gave us $70/week towards it which I thought as a ridiculous and unnecessary payment.

My nephew in NY contracted the virus..he is 28 and recovering..reckons though it's the sickest he has ever been....

In Laws also recently returned from a Cruise thankfully no issues as they are 85 and 86 respectively...

I’m a survivor @happy_tiger. Thanks for your kind thoughts. If things get dire, I’ll figure something out.

I live in Switzerland, about 3 hours drive from Milan. There are now over 6,000 cases here, and one of the highest per capita infection rates of any country.

Schools have shut down as of last week. Most people are working from home. The government have declared a state of emergency. Restaurants and shops are all closed. It’s now prohibited to gather in groups of more than 5 people.

I had booked two holidays in April and June. One was a week in burgundy and the other was two weeks in Tuscany. Both will be cancelled.

On the plus side, I live on a lake in a small village in the mountains so my quality of life is great and I’m lucky to be where I am in that sense. Not many people around and the spring weather is coming, so aperol spritz on the balcony while I see this out.

I’m also lucky to be able to take advantage of the weak AUD and repatriate some money back which is a massive plus.

Health risks aside, I spend about 20 hours a week in meetings about COVID-19 in my role and the year is going to be a write-off. I’m closer to the risk but still lucky in many ways (for now).

How do you find UBER? I heard it is pretty hard to make a descent living out of it!

Pretty much everyone who does it from my experience does it as a side job.

I think the idea of this particular CV thread has been lost..it was to support each other and our own experiences with the virus...

Plenty of other thread to discuss the general effects of the virus.. lets try and stick to that..

A good mate of mine in Cairns drives for Uber. He does Ok and 1/2 supports a family of 4. His wife also works part time.
He has the ride habits of the locals pretty well sussed and can maximise his efficiency on the road. Occasionally he has to bust a gut and work long hours and weekends, but generally not.
The downturn in tourism is biting but he is still getting reasonable work at the moment.

Neighbor has tested positive, had no contact with him.

Work has defiantly taken a hit and we have had heaps of cancellations.

My work has been somewhat affected, at least at the airport - International Terminal is dead so to speak although Domestic still operating fairly normally. I'm working from home a couple of days a week which is a bonus. We've had a bunch of people tested so far, all have come back negative thankfully and no reported cases in any of our overseas postings.

I live at Lake Cathie just south of Port Macquarie. There is only 1 reported case in Port Maquarie - a 14 yr old school kid. Might change if people from Sydney come up for Easter and school holidays. Shoping at our local woolies was the same as everywhere else - bedlam - however i noticedsterday their shelves were better stocked yesterday and the panic buying has seemed to have died down a bit.

The longer this goes on the more people will settle down with the panic buying, hopefully we are starting to come out the other side of that part of this now!

Maybe not so much settling down as there are only so many idiots, and now they’re already fully stocked, at the expense of regular people up until this time, of course.

All good here so far

My work won't be shutting down. I do security monitoring, RFS and VRA dispatch.......might be a fraction quieter than usual though with more people staying home
