Dale Copley

"THE Broncos may be forced to pay Dale Copley to play against them this season.

Copley is searching for a new club after becoming a salary cap victim of the James Roberts signing.

It is understood some clubs who are interested in Copley are considering making him an offer but significantly below the $300,000-plus a year salary he was on at the Broncos.

If Copley accepts a deal beneath the value of what was to be the final year of his Broncos contract, Brisbane will be forced to top it up.

The Broncos had to take similar measures when they released Ben Barba and Martin Kennedy from long-term deals a year ago.

Copley has spoken to several clubs and was spotted in Sydney 10 days ago but is understood to have made no decision on his future."

If Copley truly was on $300k…
Just shows how inefficient the salary cap is when a club can afford to pay a back up centre that sort of money, and other teams struggle to put together competitive teams.

Maybe a majority of his $300,000-plus a year salary was made up of TPAs. Unlike Wests Tigers Broncos have no shortage of willing TPA benefactors.

Which I'm sure is exactly the arguement Ricksen was trying to make. When that's happening there's no point in having a salary cap, or more needs to be done to equalise TPA payments, which I'm not sure about the legalities behind.

Source?
No way the Roosters would get rid of Jennings IMO.

Maybe but then again I think Copley is better than Roberts overall buy the Broncos apparently are prepared to offload Copley to facilitate that trade.

Correct.

Surely if Souths offload Tim Grant and maybe another player they'll get Copely, I mean they desperately need a centre given they just let go of Dylan Walker and missed out on James Roberts.

From the Roar..Fairfax Media are reporting that the Roosters need to free-up cap space to keep a number of stars on their books – no surprise given virtually their entire best starting 13 are representative players.

And with reports the glamour club are keen to bring Sonny Bill Williams back in 2017, something’s got to give.

Apparently, that something is Jennings.

Copley would be signed as a cut-price replacement for the NSW and Australian centre, with the former Penrith Panther apparently headed to former arch-rivals Parramatta.

The Eels are on the lookout for a centre, after releasing Will Hopoate over a contract dispute and failing to land the signature of Roberts.

If the Jennings move takes place, it would mark one of the most remarkable centre-signing situations seen in years, with Roberts going from the Titans to the Broncos, Copley going from the Broncos to the Roosters, Jennings going from the Roosters to the Eels, Hopoate from the Eels to the Bulldogs, and Lafai going from the Bulldogs to the Dragons. And with almost two months until Round 1 kicks off, the Gold Coast could yet snare an outside back from the Dragons’ ridiculously full stocks and complete the circle!

It would also cap a remarkable spending spree for the Eels, who have added Kiwi international Kieran Foran, Australian and NSW hardman Beau Scott, and one-time Blues rep Michael Gordon to their 2016 squad. Add Jennings and that’s a huge off-season for a club which has struggled to attract big-name signings for a number of years.

Parra have, of course, had serious salary cap issues of late, and any potential move to bring Jennings to the club would be closely scrutinised by the NRL.

I hope that does occur @tigerdon

But i also hope that

Kieran Foran - Flops
Michael Gordon - Flops
Michael Jennings - Flops
Beau Scott - Flops

Clint Gutherson requests a release because i actually like the bloke

Gosh i hate parra

Every club in the NRL bar a few strugglers like us can buy who they want when they want, its all about TPA'S and working every loop hole you can find in the rules of the salary cap and of course if that doesn't work you just blow your cap and cop a fine, or just disregard the whole process and sign the player you want anyway and find another way to reward him for his services. Call me cynical, but its the truth

They've lost RTS and Maloney and there is presumably some truth to the Michael Jennings -> Parra rumour given they've signed another centre. I don't think this is a particularly good example of the unfair operation of the salary cap.

The Roosters dating back to the 70's have always had the money and influence to get what they want. Manly also until recently were in the same boat.

I think I read a couple of years ago a former Rooster confirmed brown paper bags with money he was paid in the 70's and that was a period when Easts were very strong.

Easts and Manly have always had access to third party deals given the very rich supporters they attract.

We know there is not a level playing field and never will be however we are not the only sports this happens (e.g AFL, English premier league appears to be top 4, etc).

Copley will be a good signing for the Rorters,he is a good player and as we know, there are plenty of ordinary ones out there….

**"The Wests Tigers also need to shed players before the season starts. NRL cap auditors have begun club inspections, ensuring a rush of market activity in the coming weeks."**

so now we have no cap space - what's going on here?

What a crock. NRL is a joke. It's like the premier league only the FA don't hand out fines to poor clubs when they need money.

Over the last few months a number of quality centres came onto the market with the possible exception of Jennings (assuming he does sign with Parra) the remaining players all ended up at top 8 clubs with Copley to the Roosters, Roberts to Broncos, Hoppa to Bulldogs, Lafai to St George, Walker to Manly. Obviously the salary cap is working well for some clubs with these clubs having the ability to maintain strong player rosters while the Tigers, Gold Coast, Knights etc struggle to attract quality players.

Like any system, the salary cap is being manipulated/better managed by the more affluent clubs resulting in the talented players always being lured by these clubs in favour of clubs like the Tigers (even when we don't have salary cap issues - of course there are several recent exceptions be it Ellis or Blair but the Tigers had a stronger playing roster then as well).
